U.S. Exports of DDGS Diversify
For email subscription, click here to register: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAFAS/subscriber/new
The United States continues to export significant
quantities of distiller’s dried grains with solubles
(DDGS). DDGS are co-products of corn ethanol
production and a competitive feed ingredient in the
United States and elsewhere. Demand has been
driven by its use as both a protein and energy
source in feed rations. China accounted for nearly
half of U.S. exports in 2014/15 (Oct-Sep) but
roughly one-quarter this past year. With robust
foreign demand beyond China, U.S. exports have
diversified.
Exports to other countries have expanded as a
result of competitive prices relative to substitutes
(e.g., soybean meal). In Southeast Asia, for
example, it appears that large quantities of rice
unfit for human consumption have increased the
demand for a protein source. Old rice can be mixed
with DDGS to help produce a balanced, cost-
effective feed ration.
Compared to the preceding year, exports to
Vietnam increased 74 percent while shipments to
Thailand increased 62 percent. Outside of
Southeast Asia, exports to Mexico and South Korea
have increased each year since 2012/13. As DDGS
prices trend downward and soybean meal prices
remain relatively higher, DDGS exports have
become more competitive.

WHEAT: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE OVERVIEW Global and Australian production in 2016/17 are both raised to new records. Global trade is boosted to a new record with stronger import demand from Asia and Brazil. Larger exports for Australia and Argentina are partially offset by a decrease for Russia. The U.S. season-average farm price is unchanged at $3.70 per bushel. U.S. PRICES:
Domestic: Prices for most wheat classes declined moderately in November, pressured by abundant global supplies. Overall, Hard Red Winter (HRW) declined $10/ton to $183, while Soft Red Winter (SRW) decreased $12/ton to $175. Soft White Winter (SWW) lost $7/ton to $188. On the other hand, Hard Red Spring (HRS) is up $4/ton to $253 this month as higher-protein wheat is in relatively tight supply globally.

AUSTRALIAN WHEAT SITUATION
Australian exports for trade year 2016/17 are now forecast at a near-record 23.0 million metric tons, up about 45 percent from the previous year. Australia is a key supplier to several fast-growing Asian markets and is now forecast to have the highest exports in 5 years. Exportable supplies are massive because of a record crop, which is now forecast at 33.0 million tons. Despite higher exports and domestic consumption, stocks will continue to grow, augmenting the already burdensome global stocks and pressuring prices. TRADE CHANGES IN 2016/17
Selected Exporters
• Argentina up 200,000 tons to 8.2 million based on the fast pace of old-crop shipments.
• Australia is boosted sharply by 2.5 million tons to 23.0 million due to larger production and competitive pricing.
• Russia is lowered 1.0 million tons to 29.0 million due to slower-than-expected trade.

RICE: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE OVERVIEW For 2016/17, global production is lowered, primarily on revisions to the China crop, but remains a record. Trade is revised marginally lower, although up from the prior year. Consumption is adjusted slightly lower, but is still up 2 percent from the prior year. Global stocks are revised down with cuts to China, though remain the highest in 15 years. FEATURE
Over the past 18 months, the USDA forecasts for 2016 exports have evolved, reflecting changing market conditions. Overall, global trade is lower than initially anticipated, reflecting weaker demand from importers. Contrary to initial expectations, Indian consumption has declined, stocks have grown, and the country has remained the top exporter. In contrast, Thai exports ultimately declined from initial expectations, as stock sales were sluggish despite the government’s stated commitments to liquidate stocks via auctions. Vietnam, generally a residual supplier, has found it difficult to compete against the Thai old crop sales. Looking ahead to 2017, trade is forecast higher with higher demand from Asia and the Middle East. India’s exports are expected to remain in the lead, though declining marginally as domestic consumption rebounds and non-basmati exports face tighter competition. Thailand’s exports are forecast slightly higher, as sales from stocks will continue next year and larger production supplements supplies. Vietnam’s exports are forecast up, but still below historical levels.

Imports for several countries have trended down in 2016. China remains the largest importer, though its buying has slowed in recent months. Its imports are forecast to rebound in 2017 with a smaller crop and a renewed commitment to purchase from Thailand. For the Philippines, imports were halved in 2016, despite initial expectations that poor weather conditions would lead to large purchases. Imports are forecast to return to normal levels to replenish stocks. For Bangladesh, however, sufficient production and the imposition of a higher import tariff cut imports dramatically in 2016, which are expected to remain low in the near future. Other key countries such as Nigeria, Indonesia, and Iran also trimmed imports modestly in 2016. PRICES
Exporter quotes for long-grain rice remained fairly stable over the past month. Only Thailand and India saw quotes strengthen to $379/MT and $353/MT, respectively. The Vietnam quote declined slightly to $343/MT. The Western Hemisphere quotes remain elevated at $465/MT for Uruguay and a slight decline to $455/MT for the United States on thin offshore demand.

COARSE GRAINS: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE
OVERVIEW
For 2016/17, global corn production is projected higher from last month with larger crops for
Brazil, Canada, China, the EU, Indonesia, and Russia. Global trade is projected higher,
primarily driven by stronger imports from Colombia, Iran, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Exports are
raised for Brazil and Russia on greater supplies. The U.S. season-average farm price is forecast
5 cents higher to $3.35 per bushel.
PRICES
Since the release of the November WASDE, South American quotes moved higher on tight
nearby supplies. The Brazilian quote is up $1/ton to $185, while Argentine is up $9/ton to $183.
In comparison, U.S. and Black Sea quotes have ended lower on large supplies, with the U.S.
quote down $6/ton to $159 and Black Sea down $3/ton to $167. U.S. corn has remained the
lowest since February on a FOB basis, reflecting abundant U.S. production and relatively tight
supplies in competitor countries.

TRADE CHANGES IN 2016/17
Selected Exporters
Brazilian corn is raised 1.0 million tons to 22.0 million on a record crop.
Russian corn is boosted 600,000 tons to 5.3 million on record production.
Argentine barley is down 200,000 tons to 2.0 million with a smaller crop.
Australian barley is up 300,000 tons to 7.0 million on a record crop, while sorghum is
slashed 500,000 tons to 400,000 reflecting reduced crop prospects.
Selected Importers
Algerian corn is boosted 200,000 tons to 4.5 million on stronger expected feed use.
Canadian corn is down 500,000 tons to 1.0 million offset by larger production.
Chinese sorghum is cut 500,000 tons to 5.0 million reflecting recent slow purchases and
tight supplies from Australia, a major supplier.
Colombian corn is raised 300,000 tons to 4.8 million on brisk sales from the United
States.
Egyptian corn is up 250,000 tons to 9.0 million on stronger demand for competitively
priced feed grains.
EU corn is down 400,000 tons to 13.1 million on larger supplies of feed-quality wheat
and higher domestic production.
Indonesian corn is cut 300,000 tons to 1.7 million as import-restrictive policies are in
place, and the government promotes self-sufficiency in corn production.
Iranian corn is up 500,000 tons to 7.0 million on stronger demand for competitively-
priced feed grains and larger exportable supplies in Brazil, a major supplier.
Malaysian corn is up 200,000 tons to 3.8 million on competitive global prices.
Taiwanese corn is boosted 400,000 tons to 4.6 million on robust feed demand.

OTHER NOTES Local Marketing Years (LMY): LMY refers to the 12-month period at the onset of the main harvest, when the crop is marketed (i.e., consumed, traded, or stored). The year first listed begins a country's LMY for that commodity (2015/16 starts in 2015); except for summer grains in certain Southern Hemisphere countries and for rice in selected countries, where the second year begins the LMY (2015/16 starts in 2016). Key exporter LMY’s are:
Wheat Corn Barley Sorghum Argentina (Dec/Nov) Argentina (Mar/Feb) Australia (Nov/Oct) Argentina (Mar/Feb) Australia (Oct/Sep) Brazil (Mar/Feb) Canada (Aug/Jul) Australia (Mar/Feb) Canada (Aug/Jul) China (Oct/Sep) European Union (Jul/Jun) United States (Sep/Aug) China (Jul/Jun) South Africa (May/Apr) Russia (Jul/Jun) European Union (Jul/Jun) United States (Sep/Aug) Ukraine (Jul/Jun) India (Apr/Mar) United States (Jun/May) Kazakhstan (Jul/Jun) Russia(Jul/Jun) Turkey (Jun/May) Ukraine (Jul/Jun) United States (Jun/May)
For a complete list of local marketing years, please see the FAS website (http://www.fas.usda.gov/psdonline/psdAvailability.aspx). Stocks: Unless otherwise stated, stock data are based on an aggregate of differing local marketing years and should not be construed as representing world stock levels at a fixed point in time. Consumption: World totals for consumption reflect total utilization, including food, seed, industrial, feed, and waste; as well as differences in local marketing year imports and local marketing year exports. Consumption statistics for regions and individual countries, however, reflect food, seed, industrial, feed, and waste only. Trade: All PSD tables are balanced on the different local marketing years. All trade tables contain Trade Year (TY) data which puts all countries on a uniform, 12-month period for analytical comparisons: wheat is July/June; coarse grains, corn, barley, sorghum, oats, and rye are Oct/Sept; and rice is calendar year. EU Consolidation: The trade figures starting from 1999/00 represent the European Union (Croatia plus the former EU-27) and exclude all intra-trade. For the years 1960/61 through 1998/99, figures are the EU-15 and also exclude all intra-trade. EU-15 member states' data for grains are no longer maintained in the official USDA database. Data for the individual NMS-10, plus Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia, exists only prior to 1999/00. Statistics: (1) Wheat trade statistics include wheat, flour, and selected pasta products on a grain equivalent basis. (2) Rice trade statistics include rough, brown, milled, and broken on a milled equivalent basis. (3) Coarse grains statistics include corn, barley, sorghum, oats, rye, millet, and mixed grains but exclude trade in barley malt, millet, and mixed grains.
