We were regretfully poised to file a sad farewell
to Kepler’s, the cultural landmark in Menlo Park,
California that was a key early 1960s hangout for
the pack of young bohemians that would coalesce
into the Grateful Dead. Beset by rent increases and
other financial setbacks, Kepler’s closed on August
Along with his sometimes contentious counterpart,
Bill Graham, Chet Helms, as paterfamilias of The
Family Dog, gave our music a place to live and
a space to dance, way back in the day. Thanks,
Chet, for always believing in an Endless Summer
of Love.
King of Hillbilly Jazz. One of the greatest fiddlers
ever to rosin up the bow. Vassar’ s elegant, angular
playing made unforgettable contributions to the
music of the Grateful Dead, Old and In The Way and
countless others. Swing on, Kissimmee Kid…
31st. But as of press time, there was a very real
possibility that, due to an upsurge in public sup-
port and interest from potential investors, Kepler’s
