Great Western Tiers the aboriginal people

have always known the tiers

as Kooparoona niara, meaning

Mountains of the spirits,

reflecting the nostalgic aura of an

area which was the meeting place

of three aboriginal nations more

than 10,000 years ago.

Later came European settlers,

spreading westwards from

Launceston, struggling to tame

the land in these fertile valleys

and plains to feed a growing

population and bringing their own

heritage to this strange country

to shape an enduring English

landscape which delights visitors

City excitement – Prospect Vale and hadspen Prospect Vale today is an urban population hub in outer western Launceston. A dynamic centre within easy reach of the city, Prospect Vale is home to Country Club Tasmania, nightlife capital of the region.

From Prospect Vale, leave the highway and its traffic behind you and follow the Great Western Tiers Touring Route signs as you head west on Meander Valley Road – a leisurely, meandering byway that leads you on a journey of discovery through the valley’s historic towns and scenic wonders.

First town along your path is Hadspen, growing rapidly as a satellite suburb of Launceston, but home to some splendid colonial buildings, notably Entally House which is open to visitors daily.

living history – Carrick, Bracknell, hagley and WestburyThe road next brings you to Carrick, where the picturesque Liffey River flows through the western

end of town. Known in the early days as Lyttleton, Carrick was an important stopping point for coaches and its many historic buildings are in use to this day. From Carrick, you can follow the signed route via Bracknell to Liffey Falls. Originally established to service the needs of the forestry industry, Bracknell now serves as the centre of a thriving farming community, set in a beautiful rural landscape.

Staying on Meander Valley Road, after Carrick you’ll find the peaceful township of Hagley, most notable visually for the towering steeple of St Mary’s Church. Built by Sir Richard Dry, the Tasmanian-born Premier who ended transportation, St Mary’s is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Australia.

Westbury is your next port of call, a town with a rich colonial past. Wander the unique village green, flanked by heritage buildings; imagine yourself back in the 1850s surrounded by soldiers, convicts and citizens – in fact, four times as many residents as today – half of whom spoke Gaelic!

The village of Westbury has been described as ‘more English than England’, reflecting the desire of those early settlers to impose a familiarity on this foreign land.

Fine art, fine food and forest splendour – deloraine, elizabeth Town and MeanderFamous for hosting Australia’s largest working craft fair each November, Deloraine is home to a growing number of artists and craftspeople who draw inspiration from the magnificent scenery all around. Their creative passion is exemplified in the inspiring Yarns Artwork in Silk wall hangings, on display at the Visitor Centre in Deloraine.

Take a stroll around the town and along the banks of the gently flowing Meander River, enjoy the creations along the sculpture trail – some bold, some quirky, some beautiful. When you find the life-sized statue of the great racehorse, Malua, you have arrived at the Visitor Centre; make sure you call in for a chat with a local and learn about things to see and do around the area.

Heading north from Deloraine, the Bass Highway will take you to Elizabeth Town, the centre of a renowned gourmet trail, or to the coast at Devonport. Or go south and enjoy a short, scenic drive to the quaint little town of Meander and, beyond, to Huntsman Lake and Meander Forest Reserve.

onwards – to Cradle Mountain and the wilderness – via Chudleigh and Mole CreekContinuing west from Deloraine, you’ll arrive at Chudleigh, Tasmania’s Village of Roses. As you’ll discover when you descend from hillside, to grassy plain and on into the village, it’s truly reminiscent of its Devonshire namesake.

From Chudleigh, your road winds along a breathtakingly beautiful valley between the Great Western Tiers and the Gog Range to Mole Creek, where Mt Roland rises starkly in front of you.

Wonderfully picturesque above ground, below there is a whole other world of beauty. Mole Creek’s famous caves have been a drawcard for generations of visitors and today’s show caves – Marakoopa Cave and King Solomons Cave – are a highlight not to be missed.

Mole Creek – where Tasmanian Tigers roamed (and, according to some locals, still do) is the hub of an area of unspoiled natural beauty, a mecca for both serious hikers and casual bushwalkers seeking a wilderness experience and sensational views.

Pearn’s Steam World has one of the largest collections of traction engines, veteran tractors, stationary engines and agricultural machinery in

liffey FallsThere are two walking tracks through beautiful rainforest to Liffey Falls – part of Tasmania’s World Heritage area. A 45 minute return walk from the top car park offers developed picnic facilities and a shorter, higher grade walking track. The alternative track from the lower car park offers minimal facilities and a longer and less developed walking track. You can get to Liffey Falls via Bracknell or via Deloraine and Lake Highway – just follow the signs.

alum Cliffs–TulampangaAn enchanting short walk (about 40 minutes return) takes you to a forest lookout perched high above the boulder-strewn Mersey River as it flows along the valley through the Alum Cliffs Gorge. Tulampanga, or Alum Cliffs, was a place of enormous social and spiritual significance to Aborigines because of the ochre to be found in that area of the Gog Range. Many tribes travelled to Tulampanga to obtain this highly prized material and for them this was a sacred celebration place.

devils gulletA short alpine walk (about 30 minutes return) to a stunning lookout platform overhanging a sheer cliff face, with views to Mount Ossa, Cradle Mountain and other landmarks across the huge chasm of the Fisher River valley. This is a simply awesome experience on a windy day, when the dolerite cliffs channel south westerly winds up into the gullet.

Walls of Jerusalem, and moreLonger walks, many suitable for experienced and well-prepared bushwalkers only – so please check first – include the fabled Walls of Jerusalem National Park, Meander Forest Reserve, Quamby Bluff and a number of tracks which take you up the face of the Tiers to the World Heritage Area of the Central Plateau.

cycling trails have been developed along these roads.

For even more enjoyment, you can download a series of inspiring podcasts

from our website, bringing the region to life. cycle trail maps are available at

the visitor centre in deloraine. Each ride is around 70 km in length, taking

in most of the townships and attractions of the Great Western tiers. You

will find accommodation, cafés, restaurants and camping grounds available

throughout your journey.

The great Caves Ride This ride can be taken as either a one or two day tour and will take you through an area that is home to some of the most famous caves in Australia. Make time to stop at the many attractions this area has to offer, including Trowunna Wildlife Park, spectacular Alum Cliffs, and the spellbinding King Solomons and Marakoopa Caves.

The great Country RideA flat ride through scenic countryside and historic townships, the Great Country Ride explores the district’s English-style countryside. Along the way you will discover the traditional farming practices that characterise this area and some of the best evidence of our colonial heritage.

The great gourmet Ride An easy ride through lush pastures and valleys to the west of Deloraine – an area that is home to some of Australia’s leading gourmet producers. In contrast to the Great Country Ride, this tour offers a glimpse of some of the region’s more innovative farming practices and provides plenty of opportunities to stop and sample delicious gourmet produce along the way.

The great World heritage RideThe Great World Heritage Ride extends south from Deloraine, providing amazing views of the Great Western Tiers as you approach the edge of Tasmania’s famous World Heritage Area. As you journey south towards Liffey Falls, the ride becomes more challenging.

Cyclists should take careful note of the safety information contained in maps and podcasts and be aware that the final stretch, on the approach to Liffey Falls, is suitable for hybrid and mountain bikes only.
