LOCAL TOURISM INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO SHINE
Tourism continues to be big business for our community. The State of Iowa annually conducts
an economic impact study on tourism both for the state and for all 99 counties. The results for 2015 are finally in, and tourism grew once again in Des Moines County – to a record $132 million economic impact.
Tourism continues to be a shining gem in our community.

PRESIDENT & CEO’S LETTER
by Jason Hutcheson
The construction of the Hampton Inn by Great River Entertainment and the continued establishment of additional retail and dining options shows the confidence investors have in our growing economy. There is often skepticism over whether or not local residents can continue to support all of these establishments. The simple answer is ‘no’- at least not without a robust tourism industry. Because our community is a net importer of consumer spending, locals benefit from the additional quality of life amenities only because they are supported with outside money- $132 million from visitors.
Funding the Convention & Visitors BureauDespite the enormous economic benefits, tourism promotion in Des Moines County is a self-supported industry. Visitors to our community pay hotel/motel tax every time a room is leased, and a portion of that tax funds the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) for both Burlington and West Burlington. The CVB uses those funds to operate the Welcome Center at the Port of Burlington, purchase print, digital, and television ad buys in various markets, and market to group travel operators like the American Queen. Tourism promotion is funded almost entirely by visitors and yet directly benefits the local economy.
Supporting Tournaments and EventsOur community’s niche in the tourism industry is sporting events. Since the establishment of the Rec/Plex, large tournaments are held in Greater Burlington nearly every weekend from April through October. A sports tournament makes for a fun family weekend in our community because of Fun City and all the other amenities. Even teams from just 40 miles away will choose to stay overnight rather than commute simply because of the local offerings. With the upcoming establishment of the Indoor Sports Facility, those tournaments will be able to occur all year long.
The CVB provides financial support to a number of weekend tournaments through its community event funding program and through the Greater Burlington Sports Commission. Last year alone, the CVB supported or assisted 44 events and made nearly $50,000 in grants to events which attracted 51,000 visitors to the community.
State of Iowa Travel Guide CoverThe State of Iowa publishes a travel guide each year to promote all that Iowa has to offer. Only one location in Iowa can grab the coveted cover spot, and I’m pleased to report that in 2017, Snake Alley will be featured on the cover. There were four finalist communities in the running, and a Facebook voting contest was held to select the winner. Thanks to your efforts, Greater Burlington won that contest.

ON THE COVER
When you’ve got a good thing, you want to spread the word! That’s why Promotion is one of the keys to the Main Street Four-Point Approach®. As Burlington’s Main Street downtown revitalization program, Downtown Partners has an engaged Marketing & Promotions committee that plans a wide variety of events – 49 event days last year, in fact.
Downtown Partners thinks strategically when it comes to promoting downtown, whether it is to residents or visitors. Events like A Very Vintage Market create positive impressions of downtown, special events like Living Windows reinforce the district’s image and generate pedestrian traffic, and retail events like the Holiday Open House increase sales and strengthen economic vitality.
The Marketing & Promotions Committee continually fine tunes events to meet people’s needs and exceed their expectations.

On October 7, over 240 Chamber of Commerce members gathered at PZAZZ! Entertainment Complex to celebrate Des Moines County Manufacturers and to congratulate General Electric (GE).
GE is committed to manufacturing in Burlington and the long-term success of its customers – investing more than $8 million in the last few years to expand its electrical distribution capabilities and offerings while upgrading its equipment and processes. An additional economic incentive from the State of Iowa and the local community five years ago further helped GE invest in long-term growth.
Last year, GE announced with Governor Terry Branstand the revitalization of the company’s medium-voltage portfolio. The first shipment is on track to ship by the end of 2016. With the addition of this product line, GE expects medium voltage to contribute to volume growth in 2017. To execute on this additional volume, GE has committed to increasing its team to 450 employees by the end of 2018.
GE has invested in its production processes and made Lean improvements to deliver solutions faster and more efficiently to customers. Their customers are responding positively and taking notice. One customer noted, “We love coming
to Burlington because the people take ownership in the equipment and make us feel like we are number 1.” Another customer said, “Burlington is great because of the small town feel, and the hospitality of the locals is just what we want.” GE has more than 130 years of experience in the electrical distribution space and over 120 years of experience in developing medium-voltage equipment.

PARTNERSHIP HELD STATE CANDIDATE AND COUNTY SUPERVISOR FORUMS
“This award is a tribute to the tremendous talent of our employees and their commitment to our customers. I’m proud of this team and excited that they are being acknowledged and recognized for their exceptional work,” said Steve Roy, Plant Manager for GE’s Industrial Solutions Burlington facility.
Candidates running for Des Moines County Board of Supervisors and the State Legislative addressed questions asked by representatives of the Greater Burlington
Partnership’s Government Relations committee in October.

FIREBALL RUN is an entertaining adventure-travel series which educates audiences and inspires travel.
It is the story of 40 rally teams as they compete in a legendary 2,000-mile, life-sized trivia game to rediscover America in search of unique places and obscure historic artifacts.
The Convention & Visitors Bureau submitted a proposal to be considered as a overnight location during the 11th season of FIREBALL RUN. We have recently learned we have made the short list of potential locations! Series producers will visit Greater Burlington in late November for a four day site visit before making their final decision.
Stay tuned for all of the fun we are about to have in 2017!

Before I die, I want to______. How would you fill in that blank? In recognition of National Hospice Month, Great River Hospice is participating in the “Before I Die . . .” international movement started by artist Candy Chang. Great River Hospice will debut a “Before I die …” mobile wall at the Miles & Memories 5K Run/Walk on November 5, at 10 am at Great River Hospice House on 1306 S. Washington Road in West Burlington.
Chang created an interactive wall on a neighborhood building as an outlet after losing a loved one. Stenciled on the chalkboard wall was “Before I die I want to ____.” The wall began a movement that spread to more than 1,000 cities and 70 countries, helping start conversations about end of life. Great River Hospice encourages people to have these conversations now for more informed decisions later.
Great River Hospice provides comprehensive physical, emotional and spiritual care to patients in their last six months of life. It also works with patients to fulfill items on their “Before I die …” list.

GRANT ASSISTANCE RECEIVED
Downtown Partners has received grant funding from several sources for 300 Washington, which they purchased earlier this year. Through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, DPI was reimbursed $10,180 for the cost of lead and asbestos testing undertaken by Impact7G of Johnston, IA. The resulting report put DPI in line to receive $21,105 fifty percent of the cost to abate all asbestos containing materials in the former Elks building/Typewriter Shop. Low bidder ESA, Inc. of Des Moines will do the work yet this year.
In addition, the State Historical Society has awarded Downtown Partners $10,000 in emergency grant funding to go towards stabilization of the building’s roof and a broken interior drain, which are the most immediate repair needs. “With the expertise of the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission, we are working with contractors and identifying other funding sources to complete these repairs,” said Steve Frevert. “Our goal is to take care of the roof, asbestos, and drainage issues and make it more attractive for a developer to rehabilitate the building.”
