It is quickly becoming that time of year when we think a lot about retail purchases. For many companies, this is a make-it-or-break-it season.

Naturally, I could persuade you to keep the bulk of your shopping local this year, but odds are you already know the many benefits to the community of keeping your dollars local.

Instead, I would like to dig into the numbers and statistics just a bit. Each year, the Department of Economics at Iowa State University releases statistical data on retail sales for each of Iowa’s 99 counties. Although the most recent data is for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, there are some overall trends worth noting.

Retail Sales Peaked in 2016 It is no secret that Iowa Fertilizer construction had a major economic impact on consumer spending. We peaked in 2016 at taxable sales just over $590 million. That was the largest year on record both in nominal terms and when adjusted for inflation against previous years.

Our ‘Pull’ Factor is Strong Des Moines County is one of only 14 counties in Iowa to experience a positive retail pull factor. A positive pull factor indicates that our level of retail sales is higher than one would expect based upon our local population and income. This should not be a surprise as we know many travel from outside the county to shop and dine in Greater Burlington. Our current pull factor is 1.23, which is higher today than even a few years ago. It indicates that our ability to pull traffic continues to increase.

Retail Surplus at $106 Million Our attraction of outside consumers is worth about $106 million in sales. Ten years ago, our surplus figure was only $60 million.

Sales Per Capita in Peer Group Compared to our peer group communities, our total retail sales per capita ranges in the middle of the pack. We beat Clinton, Ottumwa, Muscatine, and Marshalltown, but we lag behind Mason City and Fort Dodge.

Retail Sales Prove Our Value Des Moines County represents about 1.3% of the state’s population, yet we represent 1.4% of Iowa’s employment, and 1.5% of its retail sales.

Number of Reporting Firms Down Our county has 1,111 firms reporting retail sales. This is down from 1,330 in the early ‘90s. This indicates fewer locations but more sales volume per location.

Business Mix There are two specialty retail shops for every eating and drinking establishment. Our home furnishing stores sell about half of the volume as compared to other markets, but our home improvement stores sell more than double that in other communities.

  • Why did you join YP? I joined YP for the networking opportunities that it provides. Additionally, the informative speakers at the various events provide the opportunity to expand and enhance my professional skillset. YP is also a great way to stay informed on all of the exciting things happening throughout the Greater Burlington Area. Which community organizations do you volunteer for? I volunteer for Paint-a-Thon, Meals on Wheels, Jefferson St Farmers Market and Love for Lilly Benefit.

What do you enjoy most about the area? I enjoy how involved and connected the community is. Whether it is through work or volunteering, you're able to see the direct impact that your commitment can have on this community to make it a great place to live.

Unique about me: I'm originally from Burlington. Prior to moving back in 2016, I worked in the real estate industry in the Iowa City area. This experience, along with tools I've acquired in the banking industry, have equipped me with valuable knowledge on real estate throughout the entire southeast Iowa area. I can also tell you exactly how many square feet are in an acre without Googling it!

Greater Burlington Named Regional Sports Authority District

The Greater Burlington Sports Commission, a committee of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been awarded the FY19 Regional Sports Authority District (RSAD) sports grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority. IEDA approves ten RSAD communities each year from applications received by Iowa CVBs with an established Sports Commission. Each approved district is granted $50,000 for hosting expenses of events in the designated sports district. This is the fourth time Greater Burlington has been approved for the funding.

A total of 24 partner sporting events, selected by the Greater Burlington Sports Commission through an application process, will receive a portion of the funding. These events are expected to contribute 10,000 hotel room nights and an estimated economic impact of over $14.3 million to Southeast Iowa’s economy.

    Congratulations to the selected events:

American Ordnance – 2018 Manufacturer of the YearOn October 5, over 230 Chamber of Commerce members gathered at the PZAZZ! Entertainment Complex to celebrate Des Moines County manufacturers. The coveted Manufacturer of the Year award was presented by Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham on behalf of the Business Expansion & Retention Committee.

For over 75 years, American Ordnance has been proudly producing ammunition for the US military.

This past year, they have added 107 new full time positions to their growing organization as revenue continues to climb, up 13% from last year.

In the past 24 months, American Ordnance has added two new products into their production lines. This year they have begun production on the 40mm day night thermal. Awarded with a design contract for the next generation of 40mm grenade training round and a multi-year production contract valued at $304 million, this product has allowed them to not only add one production shift, but a second shift this month and a third shift in 2019.

In the year 2020, production will begin on the 120mm tank fired high explosive round. Teaming up with Orbital ATK, they were awarded the design contract for that new business, which is currently in development.

Their self-confessed biggest asset is their people, and their commitment to their employees is as strong as ever. Along with yearly succession planning and individual development plans, American Ordnance contracts with the University of Kentucky to train and develop their employees with the True Lean Toyota Production System. To date, 114 members of their team have completed training.

Aside from manufacturing, American Ordnance is deeply involved in the community. They are an annual participant in the Paint-A-Thon, business round tables, Greater Burlington Leadership, Economic Development initiatives and various other community activities.

The future looks very bright for one of Greater Burlington’s top manufacturers.

Congratulations to the 2018 Manufacturer of the Year – American Ordnance.

Hello everyone in Greater Burlington! I’ve missed you this year, but I’m back and ready to play! Starting Monday, November 26 I will be hiding in some awesome area businesses and leaving clues for you to find me. If you can solve my riddles and figure out where I am that day you’ll be entered to win a prize! Better yet, come find me in person, take an “Elfie” (I LOVE THEM!) and post on the Greater Burlington Partnership’s Facebook page for

an ADDITIONAL chance to win. You’re going to want to come find me in person; there’s a reason I picked these amazing stores. I’m going to put in a good word with the big guy and have them certified as “Officially Santa Approved!” Anyway, I need to get back to planning my shenanigans. See you soon!Yours in Mischief, - GB Petey

    DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Transforming the Talent PipelineThe Partnering for the Future III campaign has officially launched. An aggressive, five-year plan of work for economic and community development has been assembled and is available on the organization’s website for full review.

While the plan has many of the same strategies that have worked over the last decade, its core focus is on workforce development. Transforming the Talent Pipeline is the phrase being used to describe the workforce elements, and the plan includes strategies for every step of career development from early elementary through retirement. There are programs designed to immediately attract more workers to the market and some that will take a few years to materialize.

The overall cost of implementing the program of work is $2 million. If you are not yet an investor and would like to learn more, please contact Jason Hutcheson.
