Look after yourself and the environment a Green Comenius Magazine MEETING IN ZAMBERK - CZECH REPUBLIC On 22 nd March Žamberk’s mayor met representatives of Gymnázium, Žamberk’s partner schools. Six schools are working on project “Look After Yourself and the Environment” and parts of this project are the meetings at all the schools. The partner meeting in the Czech Republic was held from 22 nd March – 26 th March. 28 students and 13 teachers from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Turkey took part in here. Czech students were looking forward to new friends and they prepared a welcoming party for them. They danced polka (traditional Czech dance) in folk costumes and ate typical Czech food. Then the Czech students took their new friends home usually chatting with each other. Monday program was started by presentations of schools and also project work that has been done. In the afternoon the students were divided into groups and they toured around interesting places in Žamberk writing everything down to their worksheets. On Tuesday and Wednesday there were prepared environmental excursions – to Protected area Orlické mountains and ZOO in Dvůr Králové nad Labem. Again, these were not just trips but students worked in groups on the tasks in their worksheets. On Thursday all the work was done at school. As the year 2010 has been declared an international year of biodiversity, all the project work was aimed at problems of variability of organisms and cultures on Earth. Students were in groups again and they tried to solve the problems of biodiversity importance and also the impact of decreasing biodiversity on life on Earth. The students created various art works, they wrote a newspaper article and they prepared draft of web pages, too. The afternoon ran quickly with sports such as zumba, street dance or football. The teachers had the same programme, only Thursday morning was different – they were discussing next steps in the projects and next meetings, new web page and other project products. Friday was a day of saying good-bye. Some students became very good friends in such a short time and not only them were crying, but also some of their parents. Next meeting is going to be in the Netherlands (Gorinchem) at the beginning of October and everybody is looking forward to going there! A beautiful environmental experience in Zamberk Gymnázium

In March we had the chance to participate in the second Comenus Meeting in Zamberk (Czech Republic) to carry on working on the project ” Look after yourself and the environment”, which deals with the issues of the health and the environment in an international way. On the whole we exchanged ideas with students from four other countries i. e. the Czech Republic, Spain, Holland and Turkey, and with the students of Media Foscolo, who are involved in this project, too. Each school had previously made its own part for the project, and all the works will then be placed on the official website http://greenmagazine.eu/ in which you can find current news, articles, power point presentations, photos, concerning the topics treated health and environment but also teenagers problems like bullism , bad nutrition etc..). We stayed with the Czech students' families and at their school, in order to discover the culture and the habits of that country. During the first two days the whole group stayed at the Czech high school where we made all the presentations and then we did a work on the Biodiversity concept in their Chemistry laboratory. Altogether, as a group, we also discussed the project's themes and it was very interesting because of our cultural diversity, in fact there wasn’t ever an opinion equal to an other. Then we spent the following days discovering the beauty of Czech landscapes by having walks in forests, visiting their huge zoo and hanging around in the nice village. It turned out to be a wonderful trip, in which we had a great time as well as the possibility to learn a lot of things about nature, cultural differences and our selves, to appreciate the wonderful Czech hospitality, and to became friends of kids from different countries. A really beautiful experience! Alice Laterza and C. De Grazia, K. Atseslinka, R. Piscitelli, R. Robino, A. Tutone Vittoria International School – Torino ( Italy)

Denmark Continues Dolphin Slaughter

The sea is stained in red and it's not because of the climate effects of nature. It's because of the cruelty of the human beings (supposedly civilized humans) who kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon Dolphins. This happens

every year in Feroe Island in Denmark. In this slaughter the main participants are young teens.

WHY? A so-called celebration to show that they are adults and mature! Yes this is a custom to show entering “adulthood”. In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Eve ryone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty, supporting like a spectator. Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin Calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, is near extinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship! They don't die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hooks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim cry like that of a

newborn child. But he suffers and there's no compassion while this magnificent creature slowly dies in its own blood. It's enough! This has to stop! Take care of the world, it is your home! Sign against this cruelty!

Caesar’s slave The lack of care about Nature, about our environment is a symptom of a selfish and insane society that looks down the land which fed its elderly members and the rivers where the young ones will drink from. A society proud of itself which feels beyond good and evil. However, sudden natural disasters, such as the tsunami which hit Indonesia in 2004 or the earthquake that struck and caused devastation across Haiti, remind us our weak and humble human condition, the fact that we are no more than passengers on this blue sphere. Last winter our beautiful, sunny and warm Canary Islands suffered from torrential rains and strong winds which, fortunately, did not cause any human loss but left seriously damaged some of our villages and cities. Stones and mud invaded homes, floods carried cars out to the sea, ravine reborn through the streets, electrical storms caused power cuts which left most of the people in darkness. This

is, the elements took their original places again, where they formerly used to be. Before our arrogance and ambition had replaced banana trees with traffic lights, green meadows with grey asphalt, clear landscape with huge malls, sea breeze with pollution… It seems as if Nature, like an asleep lion, wanted to warn: “you can scrape the sky with high buildings, you can tear the ocean on huge ships, you can travel all around the world on fast machines, even can disturb the universe on your modern rockets. But don’t forget I will be watching you”. In a similar way that slave who walked along Julius Caesar in his glorious and triumphal parades whispering in his ear: “remember you are a mortal, remember you are a mortal…”
