WTCA Wednesday Slow/Beginner Ride June 2015

FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT

By: Bill Younts

Greetings Fellow Members! The subject of riding two abreast is one of the most important safety techniques we have. A group of riders riding two abreast, however, is far more visible to drivers. A frustrated driver is at least a driver who is aware of the riders on the road and realizes that he must slow down until it is safe to pass. This also allows the driver to safely see past us so they may safely maneuver a pass. If we ride more than two it can create an unsafe pass.

The Bicycle Tour of Colorado, 2015

By SteveCrowell

The 21st annual BTC launched from Breckenridge on June 21st with 650 riders ready to have some really big fun, and fun it was. The Colorado Rockies were beautiful as always. Heavy May snows and fair weather filled the streams and rivers with recent melt. The weather was near perfect for a mountain tour.

Day 1: We dropped down the paved bike path from Breckenridge to Frisco then followed the path to near mid-point on the eastern slope of Vail Pass. The tour turned left on to Highway 91. We climbed on a good shoulder with a slight tail wind to the summit of Freemont Pass at 11,318 ft. We enjoyed as easy downhill run into the old mining town of Leadville. We had 39 miles for the day, a nice easy start.

Day 2: The riders blasted out of Leadville for a fast downhill on Highway 24. We could see the peak of Mt. Elbert, a 14,000 footer, off to our right. We knew what was coming. Our tour hung a right on Highway 82 at Twin Lakes. After a few short miles, we hit the first of several 9% grades for the run up Independence Pass. The 12,095 ft. Pass was cold and windy with deep snow still packed away from the tarmac parking areas. It took me more than 5 hours to do the climb but the work was worth the effort. The descent off Independence down to Aspen is indeed world class. The day ended with a gentle ride along path-ways and country roads to the town of Carbondale where we camped at the school athletic fields. The route was billed at 88 miles. I showed 91 on GPS.

Day 3: We left Carbondale on a paved path that paralleled Highway 133. We rode a gentle uphill for about 18 miles. The world was at peace. The valley was beautiful. Then, all hell broke loose. McClure Pass loomed. At 10,300 feet McClure is no big deal for veterans of Independence Pass. Well, we died. Many sagged or walked. Seven, eight, and nine percent grades combined with a hot day destroyed some of the group. However, as on the day before, the 40 mile descent into Hotchkiss made the suffering worth the cost.

Day4: We backtracked out of Hotchkiss headed uphill on Highway 133 for about 25 miles. The group enjoyed a nice, gentle climb, of 10 miles on good pavement. I did notice on one hairpin that a gradient of 13% briefly appeared on my Garmin. Then the climb up Kebler Pass began in earnest. We rode 36 miles of gravel to a tough 9,980 feet. The Colorado Highway mainte-nance folks had been instructed by their superiors to wait until the following week to drop fresh gravel. Their communications failed. We were caught in miles of fresh, unpacked gravel. Flats were common. I softened my tires and plowed through.

Day 5: We took the day off in the wonderful mountain town of Crested Butte. Food, beer, rest were the order. We washed clothes, cleaned bikes and were generally lazy. I caught the movie, “Clunkers”, at the local theatre. The movie is the story of Joe Breeze, Charlie Kelly, Tom Ritchie and others as they bombed the downhills of Marin County California and developed the modern mountain bike.

Day 6: Crested Butte to Salida was the order. The ride proved to be 101 miles of really tough work. Cold weather gear was required for the first 14 miles down to the little spot in the road called Almont. We hung a left turn off Highway 135 on to County road 742 for 34 miles of beautiful, gentle uphill along Taylor Creek which flows out of Taylor Lake down Taylor Canyon. Somewhere up there must be a town named Taylor and probably a Taylor Mountain. At Taylor Lake we assaulted the famous 14 miles of dirt road up the greatest climb, in my opinion, in Colorado, Cottonwood Pass at 12,126 feet. In 2010 our porta cans blew over in a blizzard on Cottonwood. Back in 2007 we did not know until the final hour if the pass would even be open. There are many great Cottonwood stories. Progress will change some of that. This is the final bike tour to experience the Cottonwood dirt. The pass is to be paved next spring. So much for so called progress. The downhill off Cottonwood is also one of the finest in the mountains. It is easy to overcook turns. One needs to be careful. Some of the young guns reached speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. The run from Buena Vista down to Salida was uneventful except for the final ten miles into a hard, West Texas wind. After the climb and 90 miles in the saddle, the final 10 miles just hurt.

Day 7: We backtracked again. This time we rode back up the Arkansas Valley on Highway 291 and 285 to Buena Vista. The tour took a right turn on a narrow Highway 285 to Fairplay. It was then Highway 9, over Hoosier Pass at 11,541 feet and down to Breckenridge for the finish. I became ill the night after Cottonwood and only hung in for 35 miles. My need to SAG ruined my perfect tour. I was able to log 390 miles of the 425 mile tour and will be back for another go. Hopefully some other club member would like to give it a try. This was my seventh BTC. I have done seven Ride the Rocky tours. I am one of the oldest, slowest and weakest riders in the club. If you tell me you cannot do mountains, I won’t believe you.

WTCA Meeting

June 8, 2015

Randy & Sandra Mulsow’s Home

7:00 pm

Bill brought the meeting to order.

A representative spoke to the group about plans and changes for the 2015 MS150.

Sandra made a motion to approve the May minutes. Pat seconded. Motion passed.

Treasurers Reports

-Lori said that the LBC report is the same as last month.

-Donna said the Chaparral and WTCA reports have not changed from last month.

Race Report

-Bobby Stewart reported on the Vuelta Del Llano 73 mile Road Race, hosted by AMBUCS on June 6. It was well

attended. He and Robby Thrasher participated, among others.

Tour Report

-The Fort Davis Tour, hosted by Pat C on Memorial Day weekend, had good weather. Seven cyclists rode the loop

on Saturday and rode to Alpine on Sunday.

-Younts participated in the 24 Hours in the Canyon ride..

-David Nelson spoke about the White River Road Rally, which is on Saturday, June 13. There will be good support,

with food and beverages at the finish.

-The 21st Annual Tour de Muleshoe is on June 20.

Old Business

-The Ride of Silence went well. There were about 60 people in attendance (less than in 2014) which was likely due

to the cold weather. The wristbands worked well. Thanks were given to those who helped and participated, and es-

pecially to Marta for organizing the event.

-The Half Ironman Triathlon is in June 28. It is essential that we have plenty of volunteers to work the hydration sta-

tions.

New Business

-Steve Crowell made a motion to amend the constitution to allow one-day memberships. Discussion followed and

the motion was tabled for the formation of a committee to research the possibility.

-Jürgen spoke about officiating the AMBUCS Omnium and the need for more people in the Lubbock area to obtain

an officiating license. It is costly to hire officials from out of the area, largely due to the expense of travel.
