This blatant abuse of municipal proper- ty (at the expense of ratepayers) was reported by Councillor M Yengwa the following day to the municipal manag- er, who confirmed that the vehicle in question belonged to Umvoti Munici- pality. The MM, Mr B Xulu, assured Ynegwa that disciplinary action would be taken and that he would contact him that Monday (12 May) to inform of the action taken. Three weeks later that call back has still not been made. As no response was received from the municipal manager, Yengwa then con- tacted administrator Martin Sithole, who also assured him that disciplinary action would be taken and he would report back. Three weeks later no re- sponse has been received from any of the municipal officials and the driver concerned is carrying out his daily du- ties...undisciplined. Blatant abuse but Umvoti Municipality takes no action ACTING on informa- tion received, Buffalo Security personnel recovered stolen copper cables and maize and arrested four people in a well managed operation. At 3am last Thursday in the Seven Oaks ar- ea, security caught the three men with their stolen goods and handed them over to the Greytown police. A female, who was with one of the men, was also arrested when found in pos- session of two bags of suspected stolen maize. The suspects are due to appear in the Greytown Magis- trate’s Court this week. KRANSKOP and Umvoti residents are thrilled at the appointment of local resi- dent, Nhlanhla Nene, as the first ever black Minister of Finance in the new cabinet which was announced by President Zuma on Sunday. And also the first ever national cabinet minister from the area. The overall response is that “he is such a nice, friendly approachable guy.” Living in Kranskop with his wife, they are both highly respected citizens of the village. Shopping is done at local stores and, Minister Nene, a fitness fanatic, is often seen running in the area. He first hit the national headlines in 2008 when appointed deputy Minister of Finance. Born in 1958, he matriculated from Gco- thoyi Adult Centre and completed a B.Com Honours degree in econom- ics at the University of Western Cape and also has di- plomas in marketing, economic policy and a certificate in macro and micro econom- ics from the University of London. A member of the ANC since 1999, he served as chairperson of the local ANC Bhambatha branch and is a regional exec- utive member. An interesting fact is that during his 15 years as a regional admin manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance, he organised the first ever strike in the financial sector in 1990 - he was a labour union shop stew- ard and led a negotiating team for better working conditions from 1990 to 1995. He became a Member of Parliament in 1990 and chaired the Parliamentary port- folio on Finance. There has been a positive public response to his appointment with comments such as “he's not some sort of maverick.” Business has expressed the hope that he will be business friendly in contrast to the previous cabinet. Renowned as an “engaging communica- tor”, Nene is considered a good listener and is seen as a capable technocrat who is familiar to domestic and international investors. The Greytown Gazette, on behalf of all its readers, wishes the new Minister of Fi- nance Nhlanhla Nene of Kranskop all the best. UMVOTI PROUD OF NEW FINANCE MINISTER

THEY are angels in disguise. For the past four years, Sibongile

Shezi and Lungile Mthembu havetaught and cared for children withspecial needs at various venues. They currently have 14 youngstersat uBuhlebomvoti School, which ishoused in a section of the old RuralMetro building in York Street. TheDepartment of Education is pa-tiently waiting to register thisschool but is unable to do so untilland is granted, upon which theycan build the required classroomsetc.

Discussions have, for the pastfour years, been held with UmvotiMunicipalitybut ithasnotcomefor-ward with any offers of suitableland.

What is now needed urgently isfor some caring public-spiritedbusinessman, farmer or even themunicipality to donate land so thatthe school can be registered andbuilt. Interestingly enough, NqutuMuncipality provided land andhave opened a special needs schoolwhich was all achieved within thepast three and half years.

The two ladies are running theschool voluntarily - in other wordstheydonot receive anypayment forthe wonderful caring work theycarry out. They do not even receivea transport allowance to cover thecosts of their daily travel from theirhomes to the school. If any two areworthy of community recognitionand assistance, it is Sibongile andLungile.

There is awaiting list of up to 200children with special needs whoshould be attending such a schoolwhich caters for inclusive disabili-ties. The Department of Education

is fully committed to the establish-ment of this school. Ideally aboutfive ha’s of land is required, witheasy access to tarred roads - be-cause of the circumstances of someof the children, a hostel would bepart of the new school. The school'sname, uBuhlebomvoti (Beauty ofUmvoti),was chosenaftera compe-titionwas held to find a name. Overthe past four to five years, an inter-sectoral task team informal com-mittee, with the Umvoti DisabilityForum, was very involved but un-fortunately has not operated for awhile - but could be set up again.Thechildrenareveryproudof theiruniforms, which were bought andpaid for by Mrs Shezi herself.

DESPITE appeals from membersof the public, a councillor andMagistrate's court personnel, theDepartment of Works has takenno action to preserve or protecttheGreytownmagistrate'shouse.Windows have been broken, all

the electricity ripped out, basinstorn off the wall and broken, theshower used as a toilet...andmore.The house was vacated by

Greytown's previous magistrate,Gert van Rooyen, who contactedthe Greytown Gazette to say howshocked he and his wife had beento see the damage since it washanded back to the Departmentat the end of January.“Nothing is done to safeguard

the propertywhich belongs to the

ratepayers,” he said.Councillor Paul Buss raised the

vandalisation and lack of securitywith the Department of Work'shead office in Ladysmith...with atotally negative response. It will cost a considerable

amount of money to restore whathasalwaysbeenawell-kepthome- an unnecessary expense due tothe total “don't care a damn” atti-tude of the powers that be.

ALTHOUGH the State initiallyopposed bail for 24-year old Ph-elelani Mchunu, driver of the bak-kie that plunged into a Rietvleidam killing five schoolgoers, itwithdrew its opposition whenlearning that the grieving parentshad no objections stating that itwas an accident and they hadagreed that Mchunu should drivethe children.

Mchunu appeared in a packedGreytown Magistrate’s Court lastWednesday on five counts of cul-pablehomicide.MagistrateSCNg-cobo warned the accused that iffound guilty, he could be sen-tenced to a lengthy prison sen-tence.A police spokesman said hewouldalso be charged with reckless andnegligent driving and attemptedmurder.

The tragedy occurred on Mon-day, 12 May, when Mchunu, driv-ing the bakkie with 29 school chil-dren on the back, allegedly lostcontrol and plunged into a sludgedam.Five children died and 24were in-jured, twoofwhomare still in hos-pital. The children attendedschool in Mooi River.Amemorialservice for thefivewasheld at Senzokuhle CombinedSchool last Thursday and was at-tended by a huge crowd. The casewas remanded to 7 July.

In last week's GreytownGazette, Umvoti Municipal-ity advertised a notice of in-tention to lease land to setup ‘The Buy Back Centre’.In response to this, MrsMotala said that discus-sionshadbeenheldwiththeMunicipality and the De-partment of Environmentand both had indicated that

they would work with theGreytown Recycling Centreand assist in improving theservice - but nothing hascome of this.

At this stage it seems to-tally unnecessary for mon-ey to be spent by UmvotiMunicipality on setting up awaste buy back centrewhen an effective and effi-cient one is already up andrunning in the area and hasbeen for the past five years.

E-TOLLS could be operative in KZN at theMarianhill and Oribi toll plazas by Novem-ber.

A Sanral spokesperson announced lastweek that it would not be an additional toll, but an alternative method of collecting ex-isting tolls. Motorists would still have themanualpaymentoptionat theseplazasande-tolls were being introduced to speed upthe flow of vehicles.

Currently, 300 vehicles per hour use themanual payment system, whereas e-toll

couldspeedupthe flowofupto700vehiclesan hour. Additional lanes would be builtwhich would enable vehicles to go throughthe new e-toll

lanes at a speed of about 40kph - thebooms would lift on scanning the e-tag.

Approximately 100 000 vehicles use the

N3 and Marianhill toll plaza daily. The Gauteng e-tolls have been plagued

bycontroversyandspokesman for theGau-teng Opposition to Urban Tolling AllianceurgedKZNmotorists “not to be seduced in-to assisting Sanral to gain any traction forits ill conceived e-toll scheme.”

E-tolls for KZN

By Slindokuhle Mchunu.IT was an exciting and different event

for six to 10 year olds who were invitedby Boxer Superstore to compete in a cakedecorating competition last Saturday.

Greytown store manager organized theevent outside the store and the youngstershad a ball as they played with the foodsand got themselves all messy.

Some amazing talent came to the foreas each one got more and more creative.Prizeswere a R50 Boxer voucher, valid forSaturday only. It really was a fun and hap-py couple of hours for the young girls andthe parents who supported them.

Fun food and fun fare

Congratulations to the winners (from left)Azande Mchunu, Amanda Kunene, AsandaNdlovu, Ayabonga Dube, Naledi Nxumalo andSiyathanda.

NOT TO BE SEDUCED INTO ASSISTINGSANRAL TO GAIN ANY TRACTION FOR ITSILL CONCEIVED ETOLL SCHEME

ANOTHER two weeks to go and we start our racing season again.

On 7 June, you will find fanciers gazing skywards in anticipation of an early arrival from thefirst race point which is Volksrust, a distance of200 kms approximate flying time is two andhalf hours at 80 kms per hour, which is a pigeon'saverage flying speed in favourable conditions.

We progress from this distance on a northerlyroute to Louis Trichardt a distance of 700 kms.

All medical treatments and vaccinations havenow been done and the training baskets broughtout. There have been many kilometers travelledin an effort to get the birds fit and on form inpreparation for the racing programme.

Some of the later breed yearlings still havea couple of flights to moult out but should befully moulted by the first race, although I believethat as long as they have a full wing showingno gap, they should be able to do the business.

The north route, which we will be flying thisyear, has always been fairly kind to Greytown,as the birds used to fly directly over us, and, ifyou had a good one, it would drop from the packto its loft which put us on par with Pietermaritzburg fanciers. Lets hope we have that sort ofluck this year, so we can collect some combinepositions.

Anyone who happens to find any injured orflown out pigeon bearing an identification ring, please contact Trevor Tatham at 084 829 9799and I will attempt to contact the owner.
