THE INSIDE LOOK OF BACTERIOPHAGES
Nicole Colón, Astrid Díaz, Lysander Borrero y Alberto Cintrón
OBJECTIVES:
• Explain what mycobacteriophages are and why are they important.
• Distinguish between bacteriophage lytic and lysogenic cycles.
MYCOBACTERIOPHAGES
• Viruses that infect bacteria belonging to the mycobacteria genus. • Can be found in the environment, including soil.• Can cause diseases• Are used as a model to study biological process
Institute for Molecular Virology. University of Wisconsin . 2005
LIFE STYLES
• Mycobactheriophage can be group according to their life styles.
• Two different life cycle: a) Lytic cycle b) Lysogenic cycle
Lytic Cycle
Used by virulent phages
Is characterized by phage reproduction followed by host cell lysis.
