ResearchSocial Realism, an international art movement, refers to the work of painters, printmakers, photographers and film makers who draw attention to the everyday conditions of the working classes and the poor, and who are critical of the social structures that maintain these conditions.

Social realism traces back to 19th-century European Realism

Social Realism in cinema finds its roots in Italian neorealism

This is England has inspired us to do the genre Social Realism. The film is about a young boy called Shaun and it follows him and shows the ups and downs of his life. We see him getting bullied for his trousers, getting into fights, making friends and shop lifting. In our trailer we want to include lots of drama such as people fighting and breaking the law as we asked some people what they expect from a social realist film and they said they would expect these things.

Plot Ideas

Idea 1.The main plot focusing around drug dealing which ends up in a fight. It will be set on a council estate.

Idea 2.Could involve some kind of abuse in which the main bad character comes to a messy end.

Soundtrack Ideas

Theme tune e.g. Coronation Street

A soundtrack can be recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a motion picture, book, television program or video game; a commercially released soundtrack album of music as featured in the soundtrack of a film or TV show; or the physical area of a film that contains the synchronized recorded sound.

Initially the dialogue, sound effects, and music in a film each has its own separate track (dialogue track, sound effects track, and music track), and these are mixed together to make what is called the composite track, which is heard in the film.

Often social realism soundtracks consist of grime music, lots of dialogue, sounds you would hear on a regular day to day basis (such as cars) and often sounds of violence such as gunshots and punches.

Typical Direction

Fast cutsMontage of clips Shot reverse Shot

Text on screen

Cinematography• Shot types used are often close ups and mid

shots. This helps to create tension with the audience and makes them feel intimate with the characters, or even intimidated by them.

Editing• Social realism films often use straight cuts to connotate

and keep up the ideology of realism. Fades are also used to show an ending, death or cross cutting. These are used to continue the idea of reality.

How you will link to ancillary task

We will link our trailer to our Posters and Magazines by having the main character from the trailer in the magazine and on the poster. They will also include the name of the film and information such as the age certificate. We will try to make sure they look like they are the same genre and that you can tell they are from the same film by using a continuous house style, colour scheme and fonts throughout.
