Breaking down the demographics of the city of Artesia was helpful when considering what programs we were going to add to our site. One of the core values of our team was to respond back to the issues within the community and the landscape.

SITE ANALYSIS

Analyzing the Artesia site was split into multiple groups, and we have therefore compiled the research we learned. Following this, we based much of our next team design on aspects of biotic and abiotic elements.

Consideration of the surrounding context of the site was an important step for our group when we moved onto the process drawings. Understanding where the issues were when it came to the site was essential for my group because we were able to address them in the fi nal topographic changes.

SHADE STUDIES OF EXISTING VEGETATION IN ANDY’S GARDEN.
In the surrounding information we learned which streets are busiest an took that into account when we were developing our driveway on the north side of the site. Not only that, but another aspect of the research that we managed to address was where the sun hits during diff erent seasons.

We made a few adjustments between our 1/16th models. The primary changes in topography at the North end with the greatest plant density. This altered the programming, to be more focused for groups and more planting was added to the forest walk on the South end, as well. In our fi nal 1/8th model we individually created textures and placed planting.

Consideration of the existing topography was a complicated process that the group evaluated since there was no given topography. After we learned where the high and low points were on the land, we made adjustments to the land based on the demographics of the area, programs that we we’re trying to address and the water requirements of plants.

Our Hydrology Plan was conducted after we concluded where out plant masses were and what specifi c plants we were going to use for our site. This diagram was a step needed for the group to move on to individual water calculations of the site. A constant subject that we came across was the water requirements of the roof top plants because we didn’t want the roof top to have high water requirements or create so much mass to the point where it would be too much weight for the roof.

MYSTICAL MOMENTS
AS A PLACE FULL OF MEMORIES, WE WANTED TO REATIN SOME ASPECTS OF THE PARK, BUT ALSO REIMAGINE THE SITE TO HOUSE MORE MEMORIES . A VARIETY OF INTIMATE AND OPEN SPACES OFFER EXPLORATIVE AREAS FO ARTESIA TO BUILD UPON AND GROW. EACH OPPORTUNITY IN THIS GREEN SPACE OFFERS DIFFERENCES WHILE RETAINING THE SAME ASPECTS OF TOGETHERNESS AND COMMUNITY.
THE FURTHER BACK INTO THE PARK, THE MORE DENSE THE PLANTING BECOMES TO CONTRAST THE LAWN THAT IS MULTI-USE AND HAS AN IMPLIED PERFORMANCE AREA. ULTIMATELY, THE PARK IS INTENDED TO BE USED FOR A VARIETY OF SCENARIOS AND EVENTS, FLEXIBLE ALONG WITH ITS USERS.
