Introduction
This group profile is a tool to identifying the demographic and interest of the
students where I am practicing. In the Elementary school Luz A. Cruz de Santana,
I collected data from the sixth grade group. In this project I constructed a survey
using basic questions to gather information concerning residence, interest, likes or
dislikes, among other information. In this study you will find a visual display of
the graphs with its analysis. This group profile served as a guide for me because
now I know what the students want to know about, and what do they do in their
spare time. Attached to this project is the sample questionnaire we gave to the
students. It is also important to know that eighteen out of twenty students
participated in this study. The results of the interest and the amounts can vary if we
introduce the remaining students. This profile has also helped me learn the name
of the students; it became so easy to me. The students took the questionnaire to
their homes to fill it out and then return it. The information obtained in this study is
according to the students that participated; note that some did not fill all the blanks
from of the questionnaire and the results may vary. They were very responsible
with the papers. Now the following graphs and analysis:

Graphs and Analysis of Results
The group is composed of twenty two students; but only eighteen participated. In the
following table we are going to see the amount of males and females in the classroom. We can
see clearly that there are more boys than girls in this group of students.
Table 1
The average age of the students is from eleven to twelve years of age; considering that
the majority of the students were born on the year 2000. This indicates that none have fallen back
in grades; they are up-to-date. Also the majority of the students were born in Puerto Rico. Table
2 will illustrate the results:

Table 2
The residence of the students is a particular one. I say this because they come from
different places. In table 3 we can see that the majority of the students live in Humacao; but there
are a few who love outside Humacao. I learned that the students who live outside Humacao and
assist this school is because their parents work in Humacao and the school facilitates them; this is
when they leave their children in school and to pick them up in the afternoon. I think this is good
because the majority can participate in any festival, or activity we might do afterschool. The
following graph will demonstrate the results:
Table 3
The majority of the students have never lived in Puerto Rico. Only three students have
lived in the USA. Very little students know the English language; and that their parents might
also lack the language. This helps to moderate the homework that we give to our students. More
than half of the students live with their mother or some other relative. Less than ten of them live
with both parents. The following table 4 will illustrate the results:

The students’ parents’ age is quite in the range; they are almost similar. The range is from
30 to 50 years of age. There was an exception for twin in the classroom. The ages of the parents
are 43 and 71. The majority parents are high school graduates. There is a surprisingly large
amount of students whose parents have a higher educational level. This helps because we know
that the students can give their best. Their parents can be a lot of help when studying or doing
homework. The following table 5 will show the results:

PT Meetings
PT Meetings
In the school there are Parent/Teacher meetings. In the questionnaire we asked the
students if their parents assist these meetings. This shows the responsibility of the parents
towards the academic success of their children. Table 6 illustrates the results:
Table 6
The amount of people living in the student’s home is between ranges of 5 to 2 people.
The amount of brothers and sisters in the student’s home are between the range of 3 and 0.
There are a variety of interests in the students. They like sports and participate in sports
afterschool. The majority of the students indicated that they like sport. The sports that they like
are basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball and track. The majority of the students love sports. I
thought this would be a great special project. The following table indicates the amount of
students who answered yes or no to the question: would you like your school to have a sports
team?

Table 7
There are students that are in programs outside of the school. The majority doesn’t assist
to any program but there are some who do assist to the following: “La Escuela libre de Musica”,
“Catesismo” and “Brazilian Jiu Jitzu”. I think this is very good considering that students have a
lot to show. The majority of the students don’t assist to programs after school but I know that
they do possess many talents. For example, I got a beautiful art picture of me from one of my
students; I was impressed. In the future I might give a show and tell oral report so they can show
what they can do. The student’s favorite TV programs vary a lot. The following list contains the
programs that they watch on TV:

Table 8 will demonstrate the interest of the students in school, reading, art, music and
subject. They answer yes or no.

The students indicated that they like subjects also. The majority of the students picked
Physical Education as their favorite; the rest just answered none. The questionnaire also asked
what the students would want to be when they grow up. There was a variety of answers, so the
following lists are some of the options they came up with:
Gynecologist
Astronaut
NBA Player
Police Officer
Lawyer
Vetenarian
Hair stylist
Video Designer
Military
Movie producer
The majority of the students come by car to school. Come of them live nearby the school
so they walk. None of the students use bus. Exactly half of the students in my group have
health conditions. Many of them have allergy, heart, ASMA, and hyperactivity conditions.
We asked the students if they possess computer at home with internet access. This helps us to
know if we can give homework to research in their homes; table 9 show these were the
results:

We also asked the students what did they do in their spare time and they had a variety of fun
things to do. The following is a list of what they wrote:

Lastly, we asked the students if they attended any organization, association or club
outside the school, the majority said no. but there were three students that do attend to
afterschool organizations. For example, students council, chorus groups and tutoring.

Reflection
This group profile was an excellent resource of information. I got hold of so much good
data that it helped me memorize the names of the students and pretty much acknowledge what is
it they like. I’ve been teaching already for a week and a half and I have notice how importance is
to know the students interest. To be able to capture their attention in class we must know what
they like and presented to them in their own what of understanding. This group profile was a
helping tool for me because know I know what I can present to my students. I can also bring
material related to their interest.
I also notice that some of the students lack the understanding in reading. Brenda and I
decided to give the questionnaire in English; as a little challenge for the students. It turned to be
a challenge for us. The students went “haywire” when they saw the English questionnaire. We
tried to tell them not to panic but it was too late. We decided to let the students take their
questionnaire home and bring it back the next day; but then we thought what if their parents
don’t know English? Well this was an experience for me because since it was our first time
giving the questionnaire in English, we were exploring.
We learn that the students need more assistance when it comes to confronting new
material in English. I also saw that the students need structure in their writing and organization;
they need to learn how to respect the margins and write a little smaller. We have many ideas that
I am pretty sure it will help the students in our practice centers. Our goal is to take the maximum
out of the students and for them to see that there is nothing to fear and worry about the new
language being presented.
13
I hope that we can mark those students’ lives in a way that they can remember our class
as a wonderful experience. Brenda and I stated that goal. In the results of the question whether
the students like school or not the majority said yes; and that’s a good thing. In our class we
decided to motivate the students to loving English and reading. That is our goal for this semester.
This group profile was a little shaky in the beginning, but in the end it turned out alright.
