Sia’s hair raising experience a bonus for charity

May 2014 Volume 1. Edition 4.

GS Sports couldn’t be prouder of one of our favourite

mates Sia Solioa.

This month the St Helens star will shave his head for

the Steve Prescott Foundation.

Steve Prescott was an accomplished British footballer

who passed away from a rare form of stomach cancer

in 2013 at the age of 39.

Prior to passing away, Steve’s Foundation raised over

half a million pounds for charity. He was awarded an

MBE for his efforts and since had the English Super

League’s Man of Steel Award re-named the Steve

Prescott Man of Steel Award.

Sia has not cut his hair since his son Israel was born

in 2011.

He has been busy collecting donations for the big

shave and has raised thousands of dollars.

“The time is right,” Sia says. “I’ve been finding bits

of grass and my son’s lego in my hair for weeks. I get

caught on door handles too.”

GS Sports sincerely congratulates Sia on his

innovation and charity work. A better man you will

not meet. Well done mate.

Willis fights his way to the top

South Sydney’s Dave Tyrrell is a self

confessed “Superman” nutter. Yep, Dave’s not afraid to admit he’s

infatuated with the Man of Steel, even to the point of having a Superman S tattooed

on his chest. Last month, as part of his love affair with Superman, Dave took on the challenge of wearing 14 different Superman T-shirts as

part of a dare with his team-mates over two weeks.

“They said I couldn’t do it but it was a piece of cake,” Dave said.

“I wore a different shirt each day and tweeted a photo of it to prove I kept up

my end of the bargain. “The boys were amazed but it really wasn’t

that big of a challenge.” Dave has seen just about every Superman

TV show and movie ever made and collects anything Superman related. “Yep, you could say he’s my hero.”

Thanks again to BSC Don’t forget to take advantage of one of our sponsors DNA Body Science who are offering reduced prices on all product.

To take advantage of the offer, simply call Nathan Ford direct on 07 5526 6714 and he’ll assist you.

Just let him know you are a GS Sports client.

Big Marn’s joke of the month The “Big Marn” Darryl Brohman from 2GB and Footy Show fame shares this with us. “Why do wingers score so many tries? Give up champion? Because they are marked by wingers.

Dave’s a true Superman Sincere congratulations to Sydney Roosters forward

Willis Meehan who was recently runner up in the Australian 91kg+ division at the national boxing titles

in Perth.

Willis, 18, did himself extremely proud, and is now focused on making his NRL debut this season.

Big decisions await star Wallaby duo

Should I stay or should I go. That’s the quandary facing our off contract Wallaby stars Kane Douglas (right) and Christian Lealiifano who have been inundated with interest from here and overseas. The boys are currently weighing it all up.

GRASS ROOTS HIT JACKPOT

The NRL recently announced a massive injection of

funds for grass roots rugby league.

As a result of an agreement between the NRL and

NSW Government, $4 million in grants has become

available to junior rugby league clubs.

Local clubs can secure grants of up to $75,000 via a

new NSW Footy Facilities Fund.

Funds can be spent on new seating, canteens, lights,

fields, fencing and a range of other things.

To qualify, rugby league clubs will have to match the

grant through their own financial or in-kind

contribution, including some council support if

facilities are on council land.

Sutto’s big day out a great success

It was great to see John Sutton’s big day out at

the SCG last month prove such a success.

Sutto not only broke Bob McCarthy’s Club record

when he played his 212th NRL game for Souths,

but he also led them to big win over the Dragons.

Sutto’s team-mates (below) afforded him a guard

of honour at full time.

English Super League

Our thoughts are with Alex The outpouring of support for Newcastle’s Alex

McKinnon has been truly amazing.

It’s great to see the rugby league

fraternity band together in difficult

times and support Alex and his

family.

GS Sports does not represent Alex

but, like all of us, he is firmly in our

thoughts and prayers. The accident also reminds us all of

the fragility of life and how we should embrace it more.

It was great to see Alex at the Knights v Bulldogs game

recently – his courage and determination is truly

inspirational for us all.

We are pleased to confirm that Castelford duo Justin Carney and Grant Millington have both extended their tenure with the Tigers. Justin recently committed to a new five year deal while Millo has extended until the end of Season 2015.

Castleford have been the big improvers this season and both Justin and Grant have played a major role in their progression. “It’s great to get it out of the way,” Justin said. “It’s a great club with a very good coach. “I’m absolutely loving it here in England and the club is on the march. Hopefully we can contest for a title or two.”

Look who we bumped into – it’s the great Joel Caine Each month we will catch up with a former GS Sports client and let you know what they’ve been doing. This month we speak to JOEL CAINE

GS: What have you been up to mate?

JC: I am working with Sportsbet and also do some commentary with 2GB and Fox Sports. I really enjoy it and it keeps me involved in the game.

GS: Family keep you busy?

JC: It does, my wife Coby and I have four children so I’m on the go a fair bit but I love it.

GS: You come from a footballing family?

JC: You could say that. My brothers Jess (Souths) and Tony (Saints and Cronulla) also played NRL.

GS: You played for a few clubs?

JC: Yes I had stints at St George, Balmain, Wests Tigers, London and Salford.

JOEL CAINE FACT FILE: Joel Caine played 127 top grade games and scored 694 points. He was a first class goal kicker and played wing and fullback. Joel is now considered on of the game’s best young commentators. GS Sports continues to represent Joel with his media.

Did you know? Western Suburbs hold the record for the most number of wooden spoons – 17. Only six teams have ever gone through the competition undefeated. The Warriors have won more NYC competitions that any other club – two. Steve Carter – father of Gold Coast Titans utility player Paul – played 242 NRL games for Penrith. University hold the record for the most number of consecutive losses – 42 – between Round 2 1934 to Round 14 1936. Parramatta hold the record for the most number of points scored in a season – 943 – in 2001.

Loyal leaders stay put It was great to see respective captains Jarrod Mullen (Newcastle) and Simon Mannering (Warriors) get to sign new long term deals with their clubs recently. In a day and age where salary cap restrictions make it difficult for players to become “one club players” both guys are now destined to do that.

GS Sports Rookies taking giant strides in the NRL

It’s great to see the sons of two former rugby league stars making their way through the ranks with the Cronulla Sharks. Jake Goodwin (far right), whose dad Matt played for Penrith and Souths and Reece Davidson, whose dad Les played for Souths and Cronulla, are steadily heading towards fulfilling their dreams of playing in the NRL. Reece, despite having endured plenty of injuries, is part of Cronulla’s premier league squad and Jake plays NYC for them.

Sons of guns head in right direction

Congratulations to all our Junior Rep stars With the Junior rugby league representative season drawing to a close we would like to congratulate all our young players on their efforts this year.

The standard, we feel, has been as good as ever and everyone has excelled.

As we go to print, teams are preparing for the Harold Matts, SG Ball, Mal Meninga and Cyrril Connell Cup finals.

We will give you a full wrap in next month’s edition of Golden Point. If you have any photos from the finals – triumphant or otherwise – feel free to email them to either Steve or Clinton.

Once again well done to all and good luck with selection re the State teams.

Sincere congratulations to rookie South Sydney hooker Cameron McInnes, Second rower Kyle Turner, Winger Alex Johnston, Newcastle Knights winger Jake Mamo & Nth QLD Cowboys Centre Curtis Rona on making their NRL debut. Cameron McInnes against the Dragons in Round 5 at the SCG Kyle Turner against the Tigers in Round 3 Alex Johnston against the Broncos in Round 8 Jake Momo against the Broncos in Round 7 Curtis Rona against the Sea Eagles in Round 7 Special mention to Kyle for scoring his first try in the NRL in Round 6 victory against Penrtih. Still eligible for NYC, Cameron & Alex handled the opportunity well and we look forward to their careers blossoming. Standby for their team mate Aaron Gray to also burst onto the NRL’s big stage this season.
