PB/BOP ULTIMATE FRISBEE TOURNAMENTOn the 7th of June the TIS Ultimate Frisbee team travelled down to Gisborne to compete in the PB/BOP ultimate frisbee competition.

The students were billeted to various pupils from Gisborne Intermediate with the experience of sleeping the night in a foreign town. The students were very polite and hospitable towards the Tauranga team. It was a great experience. “Mean, I stayed at a flash as place!” “Our place was better, we had a spa and a swimming pool” were just a few quotes from our students the next morning.

Game day:We were split up into two pools of six teams the games were 15 minutes long. We played Whakatane first up and had a great win 12-2. We then played Gisborne Int 1 and lost 10-0 (who were the tournament winners). This followed with another loss to Ilminster 2 of 5 - 0. We then made a small come- back with a win against Gisborne 5 5-4 and then a draw against Gisborne 3 5-5. We narrowly missed out on a spot in the semi-finals. We then went on to play Gisborne 2 for 5/6th spot and had a 4-4 draw finishing 5th= so we were pretty happy with our result overall.

Overall winner was Gisborne 1 with Te Puke in 2nd and Ilminster 1 and 2 were 3rd and 4th. Our most valuable player of the day (M.V.P) was Jayden Wood Rm 8.

Our trip back up to Tauranga was very enjoyable especially the dinner at Burger King and K.F.C. We arrived back at school at 6.30pm we were all very tired.

A special thanks to Mrs Hughes and Mrs Hampton for taking us to Gisborne and making sure we were well cared for.

Our after-school Gymnastics programme run by Marie Farrell of the Gymnastics Academy and Anita Jackson with assistance from Mrs Stull has been running since the beginning of the year. The annual Argos Gymsport Competition gives these students an opportunity to perform and compete, what they have been practising at these classes. On Tuesday 12 June over 75 students competed in a wide range of events from artistic, rhythmic, trampoline events to Group Performances in Hip Hop, Aerobics and Cheerleading. Competitors were graded into Springers, Flyers and Twisters and Open Divisions so that they all competed within their own ability groups. Each competitor performed three gym routines: a floor routine, vault, and beam/mat for girls/boys. Some students also competed in the trampoline section. Students competed as a team of 3 or 4 with the top three scores counting toward the team result. Individual scores were also counted.

Competitors won medals for first, second and third with their scores being counted individually in the three apparatus and aggregated as a team result in gym routines and rhythmic routines. Our students all did really well with lots of great results as below:

Last Friday 15th June our Indoor Rock Climbing team travelled to Taupo to compete in the PB/BOP Intermediate Competition. There were students from Whakatane, Taupo, Mokoia, Rotorua and Te Puke Intermediates. After the trip down most of us were not feeling that great from the trip and were also nervous about the event.

The Year 7’s climbed first with Josiah Albert Rm 23 and Breeana Shilling Rm 34 finishing in 5th place each. The Year 8’s climbed next. Both William Esterman Rm 20 and Ben Whitaker Room 1 climbed really well - both reaching the top on the Diamond Wall and had a ‘climb-off’ for first place with William claiming first place overall.

In the girls Eden Faulkner Rm 20, Phabian Patrick Rm 27 and myself all climbed really well as a team and made the finals. I finished in a close 2nd place and Eden 4th and Phabian 5th. It was good enough for the Year 8’s to win the Champion Year 8 Team Shield. We were very excited about this. Overall it was a fun day out and we would like to thank Mr MacDonald for all the trainings and taking us to Taupo.

NZCT AIMS GAMES - 9 SEPTEMBER - 14 SEPTEMBER

“ Winners never quit and quitters never win.”

Vince Lombardi American Football Coach

These games are now past approaching and all teams are almost confirmed. We will publish a full list of our competitors in our next Sports Newsletter early next term - we’re anticipating over 200. Competitors will bring home a newsletter then with lots of information about the event.

The Opening Ceremony is going to be held at the new TECT Arena at Bay Park which is going to be very exciting.

We have teams in nearly every sporting code and are eager to get our students in top condition and well drilled before the tournament. Training squads are now well underway and it is important that your child is fully committed to their team. This year there are 16 Sporting Codes making up the 2012 AIMS GAMES with the introduction of Rugby League. Other codes are Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Gymsports, Hockey, Indoor Bowls, Multisport, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, and Waterpolo. Last year we had over 200 students competing and we won 5 cups and 49 medals finishing top of the overall medal table. For information about this tournament go to www.nzaimsgames.co.nz

If your family can help out with billeting students from Christchurch we would love to hear from you. We need to find homes for around 45 students and to date have places for 11.

SUNDAY 9 SEPTEMBER - FRIDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 2012

NZCT AIMS GAMES - BILLETS FROM SOUTH ISLAND

We have been approached again from Christchurch Intermediate Schools to host sporting students who are competing in the NZCT AIMS GAMES. We have helped out these schools in the past and wish to continue assisting them as it is hugely expensive to travel to this National Sporting Event. Billeting would be from Sunday 9th September - Friday 14th September. Once at school their team would make their own travel arrangements for the day with team mini-vans.

Chisnallwood Intermediate have 35 students - a netball team, a boys rugby 7’s team, boys football team, 2 squash players and a swimmer.

Christchurch South Intermediate are bringing a netball team. So if you’re up for a new experience that week, where you’ll:

* Meet and get to know students from the South Island* Can provide a bed, meals and a safe family home for the students* Get them to school each day where they will make their own travel arrangements, we

would love to hear from you!..........................................................................................................................................Please return to the Sports Office
