Georgina Gotch on the water

athLEtE watChEyes on our EliteThe Elite Athlete Program Launch on 18th April welcomed over 100 elite and emerging athletes in to the sporting scholarship program for 2012.

We have an enormous array of talent in an equally diverse array of sports this year. With UTS students excelling on water, land and ice. Each month in UTS Sport we will introduce this talented group of students to you and uncover their skills in the less talked about sports such as skeleton, bmx and clay shooting to your more common rugby, rowing and tennis.

Georgina GotchroWing

After spending last week at the Australian Selection Trials Georgie has been named in the Australian Junior Rowing Team in the Women’s coxless 4 to compete in the World Junior Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from the 15th-19th August this year.

This campaign will have Georgie involved in a highly intensive training program based in Sydney, two preparation camps at the AIS in Canberra and a pre-departure camp based at Rowing Australia’s training facility in Varese, Italy.

Georgie is no stranger to the tough training that lies ahead. At the 2011 National Championships, Georgie won both the U19 Women’s Eight and well as the U19 Women’s Pair. These huge accomplishments saw here competing at National Selection Trials where she dominated in the women’s pairs and was first selected in the Women’s Coxless 4. Georgie then went on to compete in the 2011 World Junior Rowing Championships in Eton, London.

It has been only 5 years since Georgie first took to the water in 2007. Her school program offered the opportunity to compete in multiple National championships in both Australia and New Zealand a fantastic starting point which has lead to her appearances and successes on in Green and Gold on the world stage.

top 25 in the World

“Hayder is one of my finest students. He shows amazing talent and possesses experience and dedication that I have only seen in other Olympic athletes’” says his coach Ali Khalil.

That experience and dedication has him inches away from an Olympic debut. In a sport where only a few high level competitors get a chance to compete internationally, Hayder has hit the world stage representing Australian dozens of times since 2006.

His appearance at the World Championships in 2009 and 2011 were outstanding and have recently gained him a position in the Australian Olympic Shadow team where he will be touring with the team for the London 2012 games.

Hayder’s recent placings at the US and German Open have placed him in the top 25 Taekwondo athletes of the world as well as number 1 in his weight category in Australia and the number 2 Australian male athlete over 2011 and 2012.

Uts interclub Championship 2012

FiGhtinG FiRststime to take on the rivals...On the 31st of March UTS TKD held their first Interclub Tournament for 2012, welcoming rival fighters from all across NSW including USYD, UNSW and UWS’s Taekwondo Clubs. UTS fighters produced very positive results and many gained valuable experience in what was only their first tournament fight, after only starting the sport of taekwondo with UTS a couple of months earlier. For those repeat offenders, dramatic growth and improvements were demonstrated in outstanding performances.

Both the athletes and the day flew by smoothly and positive feedback was received from everyone involved. It was a fantastic achievement by the club whose members volunteered their time to organised every aspect of the tournament from marketing and logistics pre-tournament to setting up, weighing in, refereeing and coaching on the day. The second UTS Interclub Tournament for this year has already been planned for around August in a lead-up to the AUGs.

a sUmmer camp taekWondo style

Pearl Beach was the place for the UTS Taekwondo teams 2012 Summer Camp. The camp provided a pituresque setting for new students to bond over a long weekend of activities, teamwork and training. Students were taught aspects of the martial arts which can not always be covered in the regular syllabus, ultimately learning skills which will not only help them in taekwondo but throughout life, reinforcing the club motto of Mind. Body. Spirit.

a REaL showCasE oF natURaL bEaUtyUts speleological society have had a busy summer discovering a world largely untouched by man...UTS Speleological had a busy summer exploring a number of canyons with a few of the clubs members even crossing the Tasman to join the Exit Cave Expedition. Why Tasmania? Well despite its size, it actually contains more cave development than any other state, having the deepest and longest caves in the county, Expedition Cave being one of them at 23km in length. The adventurers enjoyed a few days of recreation inside Mt Field before they headed off to Expedition Cave for seven days of surveying and exploration in its immense chambers, sandy stream bank deposits and impressive glow-worm display.

April was a very busy month for the Speleo’s as they took advantage of the mid-week ANZAC Day holiday, to do a five day trip to Yarrangobilly Caves in the Snowy Mountains (21-25 Apr). It’s a long drive for the cold caves that await but they say it’s well worth when you get to immerse yourself in some of the best caves in NSW. This trip was followed by a much more luxurious trip to Jenolan Caves and Cavers Cottage on the 28-29 April which was enjoyed by all.

bats aRE FLyinG hiGhThe Bats kicked off season 2012 with the annual Season Launch Lunch at club sponsor La Scala Restaurant, Paddington on Friday 30th March. Forty-five people enjoyed the lunch and heard from the Bat’s Premier League coach Daniel Lynch and Sydney Swans’ premiership player Tadhg Kennelly.

it’s a first - 5 teams take to the field! In the first three rounds of the season the Bats have only conceded 1 match across all grades. Round 1 would see the Bats field, a club first, five teams in the competition. The Bats Club President Scott Baker said on the day, “Today is a historic day for the club. It is an amazing achievement to have five teams running out there on the park. It shows how far we (the UTS Bats) have come as a club and the growing popularity of the game in Sydney.” Rounds 2 and 3 would be a Green Rinse where all teams won their respective matches.

Big mentions go to....

Nick Allardice who played his 100th game for the Bats in Round 1, Fearghal Purcell who played his 50th game for the Bats in Round 1 and Henry McGregor who played his 50th game for the Bats in Round 2.

Big thanks goes to...

E2 Design for coming on board as a Platinum Sponsor for 2012. E2 Design is one of the youngest, freshest and most professional engineering design consultancy teams in Australia. and a first year sponsor of the club.

its a GoaLUts handball ClubUTS Handball has been full speed ahead at Tuesday’s trainings leading up to the NSW Handball season, starting mid-May. An increase in members has the club undecided whether they will enter 2 men’s teams in 2012.

UTS Handball is very thankful of Hunter Fujak’s efforts and also happy to introduce Richard Ridley as the UTS Men’s Coach, who is also the coach of the Australian Youth Men’s team.

Down at the beach the sport is also gaining a lot of interest. If you are missing the beach and its too cold for a dip give beach handball a go. For more information email [email protected] and head down to their weekly trainings at Queenscliff Beach.

Uts KinGs oLd boysKings Old Boys Rugby has had a near perfect pre-season in 2012. After a successful trip to the Orange 10s, KOBs has won 8 games straight after trials against St Ives and Epping. King’s Old Boys started their Barraclough Cup campaign on an impressive note, with a convincing 25-5 victory over Petersham at Camperdown Oval. After being 0-5 down after five minutes, KOBs hit back with three tries to take away the four competition points. The backline was particularly impressive, with fullback Mitch Baker taking Man of the Match honours after scoring a try and slotting two conversions and two penalties. Winger Simon Wotton and halfback Matt Page scored the other two tries. Coach Alex Deane was upbeat after the game. “We had a shaky start but it all came together in the second half”, he said. “I was especially pleased with the effort of some of the new players, particularly Matt Page, Aurelien Bouthier and James Ford.”

In lower grades, KOBs colts won 22-12, 4th grade lost 16-3, 3rd grade lost 3-0 and 2nd grade lost 25-10.

Kings Old Boys play in the Sydney Suburban Rugby Competition, and are always looking for new players. We train at Wentworth Park on Thursdays at 6:30pm. Come down and have a run or you can check us out at www.kobweb.org.au for more details.

Over four days the UTS-Sydney Dragon Blades competed alongside sixty-five other clubs from around Australia. With 17 members representing Sydney Dragon Blades, the club achieved semi finals in both mixed and women’s heats for the 500m and 200m events. A great result from our small and yet strong team.

tiGER tiMEsCoach Jim Pizanias returns...The 2012 season sees Jim Pizanian return as UTS Tigers first grade coach, while Anthony Turner returns to the club after a year in QLD coaching the second grade team.

A new coach and a tough couple of months of pre-season training culminated in a runners up effort in the NSW Tertiary League Nines competition, where the Tigers boys lost to arch rivals Norwest Polecats in the final.

The season officially opened on 14 April with both grades travelling up the F3 to take on Newcastle University. The Tigers second grade team opened its premiership defence with a 34-16 victory. Five-eighth Matthew Waugh was outstanding, scoring two tries and setting up another three. First grade was also impressive, opening its 2012 campaign with a 32-16 win. Veteran UTS fullback Simon Smith scored a hat-trick within the first half hour and was voted Players’ Player.

Away from the field, UTS successfully hosted its season opening party after the Nines competition at the Red Lion Hotel in Rozelle. More recently, the club was back at the Red Lion to run Anzac Day events on behalf of its sponsor.

Following the round 2 washout, the Tigers travel to Canberra in round 3 and then play rivals Norwest Polecats in round 4 at Norford Park, Sefton.
