We hope you’ve all had a great semester 1 and that exams were a walk in the park! The first half of the year was packed full of plenty of Sport and Recreation events and we’ve got more planned for the rest of the year.

April kicked off with the Survival of the fittest competition, looking to find out which team could keep up with the gruelling challenges to be crowned UTS’ fittest athletes. Take a look at the photos and also find out what else is available from the recreation department over the next few months.

The 2015 Amazing Race had it all! Check out what the teams got up to and the amazing prizes that were up for grabs. 25 teams battled it out deciphering clues and completing challenges for one to be crowned Amazing Race Champions. Turn to page [13] to see who took home the sweet prizes.

Did you know there are 209 athletes on the Elite Athlete Program at UTS for 2015? Read all about the program, the launch evening and even meet 2 of our Elite Athletes inside this issue. Also check out the sport calendar and see where you can get involved!

Work on your speed this month with a workout from ActivateFit’s Manager Ben Ly and he’s also let you know how much exercise you need to do to work off some of those tasty but not so healthy treats we all love! This is great info for those starting to prepare for this year’s City2Surf. Find out how to join TeamUTS inside!

Also find out how TeamUTS is shaping up for the Eastern University Games in July with an update on how their preparations for Wagga Wagga are going. CSU have promised to fly the flag of the winning University on their campus. Do you think we’ll see our flag up there?

Enjoy all of this and more in this edition and if you have any questions on how to get involved, give us a call or come and see us in the sports office in Building 4!

ELITE ATHLETE PROGRAM 2015

April 15 saw the official induction of the 2015 Elite and Emerging Athletes into the UTS Elite Athlete Program. For the launch, athletes and guests were treated to a lavish cocktail function at the UTS Aerial Function Centre.

The UTS Elite Athlete Program continues to grow in size and quality each year, with close to 300 applications received and a total of 209 scholarships awarded, 2015 has seen by far, the largest intake of students into the program. 103 Elite and 106 Emerging athletes were inducted on the night and Elite athletes were presented with their merchandise packs by Vice Chancellor, Professor Attila Brungs.

UTS continues to offer one of the most comprehensive university Elite Athlete Programs in the country which is evident in the large number of high calibre elite athletes that continue to choose UTS. The program has attracted athletes including Australian cricketers Alyssa Healy and Patrick Cummins, 2012 London Olympians Lucinda Whitty, a silver medallist for Sailing, Daniel Arnamnart for Swimming and James Clark for Water Polo and Commonwealth Games swimming medallist

Kenneth To. Australian Rowing representatives Ed de Carvalho, Genevieve Horton and Georgie Gotch have also made the choice to study at UTS.

The program has also attracted a high number of Elite junior and senior athletes, who regularly represent at state and national levels in their chosen sport as well as future NRL and rugby stars. Athletes inducted into the program in 2015 are involved at the top level in a wide range of sports from Bocce to Greco Roman Wrestling and everything in between.

ActivateUTS and the University continue to move from strength to strength in providing these top athletes with the ability to find the fine balance between continuing to train and compete at an Elite level whilst taking on university studies. The University’s Academic staff in conjunction with UTS Sport continue to offer flexibility, understanding and a supportive environment for student athletes to achieve their best, which are the main priority areas for the program to help athletes achieve not only great results on the sporting field, but academically as well.

The large number of athletes involved in a large variety of sports have created impressive intervarsity sporting success, especially for an urban campus, with UTS cementing itself in the top 4 overall in Australia. 2015 looks to be a promising year for UTS and its elite and emerging scholars with athletes aiming to reach new heights in sporting excellence and UTS aiming to become the first choice for elite athletes looking to pursue tertiary education.

1. How are you enjoying UTS so far?UTS has been great for me. There is such a range of opportunities for students to get involved in. With 34+ sporting teams and 100+ social clubs, many sport and recreational events (city 2 Surf, Survival of the fittest, World Cup futsal competitions) and University Games competitions , there really is something for everyone. You can make your time at Uni as enjoyable and social as you like!

2. Tell us a little bit about your sport/what you do:My favourite triathlon distance is the Half Ironman – 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run. There is a fair bit of training that needs to be done each week but I really enjoy it. Triathlon is great where every race will challenge you in different way, both mentally and physically. It also allows me to travel to incredible places to compete.

3. How often do you train?I generally train 2 – 3 sessions per day. A typical week this involves 3 swims, 200-300km riding and 70-90km running and 2 gym sessions.

4. What do you consider your greatest sporting achievement?Qualifying for world champs as a professional last year (World professional ranking inside the top 100).

5. What do you consider your greatest non-sporting achievement?I am really proud of my marks so far in my degree. With only a year to go, the end is near on a degree I once never thought I was capable of.

6. What are your goals for 2015 and beyond? My goal for 2015/16 is to finish the season with a world ranking inside the top 50 and race world champs 2016.

1. How are you enjoying UTS so far?UTS is amazing, when I first began University the general consensus was Newcastle university was the place to go for engineering, after coming to UTS and witnessing the facilities, I’ve been blown away. One of the best decisions I’ve made to come to Sydney and study at UTS.

2. Tell us a little bit about your sport/what you do:I compete across the throwing events in Track and Field, specializing mainly in discus and shotput. I like to think I’m changing the stereotype of a thrower, I’m not 7ft tall and 150kg like a lot of my competitors, I’d like to prove correct technique and hard work can out perform sheer size anyday.

3. How often do you train?5-6 Days a week in the gym and when in season and extra 3 days a week technical training.

4. What do you consider your greatest sporting achievement?National champion for 5 years consecutive in discus before competing in opens and representing Australia at the world youth championships in Bressanone Italy, making to top 8 in a field of 46 competitors where I was the shortest at 6ft3 and lightest at 90kg.

5. What do you consider your greatest non-sporting achievement?Still finding time to spend with my friends while being under the time constraints of an elite athlete.

6. What are your goals for 2015 and beyond?Carry my performances and achievements as a u/23s athlete into the open athletic field, and get a new set of green and golds.

EASTERN UNIVERSITY GAMES

250 keen UTS students took the approximately 5 hour drive to Wagga Wagga to compete at Eastern University Games against other tertiary institutions from the NSW/ACT region. After a long week of sport, dressing up each night and dealing with the cold weather, Team UTS managed to qualify for seven Gold medal matches on the last day of competition. After a tight race to the finish for champion university, UTS were crowned the overall champions after winning six gold medals, narrowly beating out the University of Newcastle and the University of Western Sydney.

Gold medals were won by the Women’s Football, Women’s Fustal, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Volleyball and by

the Mixed and Women’s Netball teams. This is the sixth year in a row that Women’s Netball have won Gold at the Eastern University Games and the fifth time in six years that UTS has claimed the title of Eastern University Games Champions. A Silver medal was won by the AFL 9s team and Bronze medals went to the Men’s Touch Football and Women’s Volleyball team.

All the teams will now look towards preparing for the Australian University Games held on the Gold Coast later this year. Teams will hold trials and begin training to help UTS maintain its place in the top 4 sporting universities in the country. Keep an eye out on our UTS Sport Facebook page for more info!

ONE SOCK

You can help give a voice to the elephant in the room.

ONE GOAL

@batyraus

What is 'Batyr'? Batyr is a for-purpose organisation (not for profit) that aims to engage, educate

and empower young people to speak out about mental health issues. Batyr uses young

speakers with a lived mental health experience to encourage other young people to reach out

for help when they need to.

What we do: Batyr offers school (Batyr@School) and university (Batyr@Uni) programs that use

young speakers with relatable, lived social or mental health experiences to educate students on

the support networks and services available to them and empower them to reach out when

needed. Since its conception in 2011, Batyr has reached over 16,000 students through its

programs, and 100 young people have been trained through the Being Herd Program to share

their journeys of mental ill health and seeking help.

The One Sock One Goal campaign encourages young people, individuals and teams to wear

one bright blue Batyr sock with one of their own team socks at sporting events. The aim is to

start positive conversations around mental health and raise awareness of mental health issues

facing young people. The money raised goes towards ensuring more young people get access

to Batyr's preventive mental health programs.

Head to www.batyr.com.au to find out how.
