T20 WORLD CHAMPIONSThe Australian Women’s Cricket Team wins the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka!UTS EAP scholar Alyssa Healy was instrumental in the win against England at the T20 World Cup, opening the batting and setting a brisk early pace. The match was tense until the very end, with 16 needed from the last over. The game went down to the last ball, with the Aussie girls winning by just 4 runs to make it their second trophy in a row. Alyssa was the 2011 Sportswoman of the year at last years’ Blues Awards, and is clearly going from strength to strength. She is also the captain of the Sydney Cricket Club 1st Grade Women’s side.

Fellow EAP scholar Pat Cummins has also been competing in Sri Lanka in the Men’s T20 World Cup, the Aussies unfortunately being knocked out in the semi finals.

BATIZADO....BAT WHAT?The UTS Capoeira club in association with Group Capoeira Brasil hosted an annual grading event, called a ‘Batizado’, at the UTS MPSH on Saturday 20th October. With special guests including, master, Mestre Boneco, one of the three founders of the Group who is from Rio de Janerio and Mestre Sabia from Group Ginga Mundo who is from Bahia. Both the Masters shared their capoeira knowledge and wisdom in the form of workshops throughout the week.

Many great capoeira teachers from all around Australia and New Zealand participated in the Batizado (grading event) and many spectators enjoyed the talent that was showcased on the day.

UTS Capoeira are very proud and happy to bring the rich Brazilian culture to the Australian community to experience it for themselves. Capoeira plays a key role in the Brazilian history which is the second most practiced sport after soccer.

MY OWN FIXIEChinese Med student Luke Robinson has himself a CELL Fixie bike after winning the Ride to UTS Day prize draw!

Ride 2 UTS Day on Wednesday 17 October saw many UTS students and staff arriving at the UTS Tower Builidng to a delicious and well deserved breakie. A big crongratulations must go to the 115 000 people including the UTS community who tackled the Sydney streets on two wheels, as they are definately not the most rider friendly in comparison to other big cities. However it is through events like Ride 2 Work Day that not only the relationship between cyclists and motorists can improve but the the contribution bike commuters makes to better transport in seen on a larger scale.

Luke was not the only prize winner on the day. Prizes donated by CELL Bikes were awarded for:

• First rider to the Forecourt (Helmet)

• Longest distance travelled (Front & Rear Lights)

• Shortest distance travelled (Bike lock)

• Best helmet hair (Floor Pump)

• A UTS Cyling Jersey wearer (Camelbak Hydrobak)

WATERPOLOSeason starts with success...Balmain has started off its summer season in great form, notching three wins from as many games across our men’s and women’s first grade teams. With the appointment of a new head men’s coach, Erkin Shaghaev, we now boast Olympic gold medallists as coaches leading both L1 and M1 teams (Debbie Watson returns to coach the ladies team for a second year).

While training and competition has started, new players are very welcome to join our club. Please visit www.balmainwaterpolo.com.au for registration and training details.

GIRL POWER... It is not often that a 60kg female can beat 90kg plus male athletes! UTS Rowing Club member Sarah Pound’s performance at a recent Rowing Australia Camp in Canberra turned some heads. In a 5k time trial she not only won the event on prognostic basis but also beat a number of U23 Heavyweight male athletes on time is impressive.

UTS ELITE ATHLETE PROGRAM

UTS FENCING FEATSFencing club members have secured fantastic results over the September – October period.

Amongst these is the outstanding performance by Julie Seggie who brought home 3 Gold and 2 Bronze from the 2012 Veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships. Julie along with Sarah Osvath, a UTS iThree Institute staff member and Abigail Nutt, a UTS Alumni and a former winner of the UTS Sport Woman of the Year award, made up of the Australian Team that defeated England in the Women’s Team Epee final by 45-15.

Having achieved the best result by an Australian women modern pentathlete at an Olympic Games, Chloe Esposito built on her success by taking out the Bronze medal at the 2012 Modern Pentathlon UIPM Junior World Championships which were held between 3rd and 11th September in Drzonkow, Poland. Chloe’s overall point was 5360 which included a respectable score of 880 from the fencing event. Chloe will spend the next six months in Spain to improve on her fencing prowess. On the home front, UTSFC did well in the Australian Junior National Fencing Championships which were held on 22nd and 25th September.

Lishan Sung successfully defended her Australian Junior National Women’s Foil title, a title which she now has won in 4 consecutive times. Lishan also led the NSW A Foil Team to victory in the Junior National State Team Foil Championship, the final match was closely contested by a strong Queensland Team with the final score of 45-41 in NSW A flavour. Daniel West and Lachlan Fitzgerald continued to impress in Epee with results of 6th and 9th place respectively in the Men’s Epee event. Daniel and Lachlan were part of the NSW epee team that took out the bronze medal in the Junior National State Team Epee Championship. After a long absence from competitive fencing, Eunice Fung fenced impressively to secure a well-deserved 10th place in Women’s Foil. Alexander Mei completed well against much more experienced fencers, and took home a respectable 23rd place in Men’s foil against a strong field of opponents.

Over the weekend of 14th and 15th October, UTS fencers put up a strong show of skills in NSW State Foil Championships. UTS members, Wei Tin (Addison) Cai and Lishan Sung took out the Men’s and Women’s titles respectively, and in doing so, once again affirming UTS dominance of the weapon in the state.

UTS BATS FLYING HIGH AFTER WINWritten by Alex CauchiIn 2011 the UTS Bats struggled to get wins on the board after moving up a division. It was a different story in 2012 with four grades in the final series and one side crowned champions.

Third grade defeated Blacktown Magic 94-53 at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday. The club came out firing, booting a goal within the first two minutes as they kept Blacktown scoreless for long periods. Nicholas Barrett and Edward Williams booted four and three goals respectively while Simon Horan was named man of the match.

Club president Scott Baker said that the club had improved drastically across the board in 2012. “They’ve really upped their game this season,” Barker said.

First grade’s form lifted under the eye of head coach Daniel Lynch, who also works with the Western Bulldogs in the AFL, and assistant coach Tom Chadwick. “Our first-graders went from three wins in 2011 to eleven wins in 2012 which is a vast improvement. “They narrowly finished on sixth spot and were unlucky to miss out on a spot in the finals. “But we had four sides in finals series, two in grand finals and one winner so it was a good year for the Bats.”

SEASON IS IN SWINGThe 2012-2013 triathlon season has kicked off and balance members dove straight in to it. Mark Egan and Greg Tomney had excellent days out at the Forster Elite Energy Ultimate triathlon which consisted of a 2km swim, 120km bike and a 20km run.

Balance women represented the club with honour and in numbers being the most represented club at the annual Tri-pink at Homebush Olympic park. This is an all age women’s only race day which aims to promote and raise money for breast cancer at which many of the clubs youngsters enjoying their first triathlon experience. Members have also been busy with other activities with several taking part in the Melbourne marathon and Fitzroy falls marathon.

The clubs first major race of the season is in two weeks, the Nepean race at Penrith. This is always a great race and great way to start the season.
