Terminology

Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) The minimum load that will cause a piece of equipment to fail.

Working Load Limit (WLL) The maximum working load that a piece of equipment is manufactured for.

(WLL have a safety factor of 1:5 incorporated into the rating)

Safe Working Load (SWL) Is the load that a piece of equipment can be safely utilised without fear of fail.

(SWL have a safety factor of 1:5 incorporated into the rating)

Uniformly Distributed Load (UDL) A load that is spread evenly along the length of a supporting member

(e.g. Fly Bar or Truss)

FSWR SWL = (Dmm²) x 8 FSWR SWL = (Dmm x Dmm) x 8 FSWR SWL = (6mm x 6mm) x (8) FSWR SWL = 36 x 8 FSWR SWL = 288kg

Flexible Steel Wire Rope (FSWR) (Fibre Core) - (Diametermm²) x 8Natural Fibre Rope - Diametermm²

SWL for 6mm FSWR?

SWL for 12mm Natural Fibre Rope?

Fibre Rope SWL = Dmm² FSWR SWL = Dmmx Dmm FSWR SWL = 12mm x 12mm FSWR SWL = 144kg

Chain - Diametermm² x Grade x (0.4 or 0.3)**Grade 80 chain use 0.4 in the formula *Grade 30 or grade 40 use 0.3 in the formula

SWL for 10mm, Grade 80 chain?

Chain SWL = (Dmm²) x G x 0.4 Chain SWL = (Dmm x Dmm) x G x 0.4 Chain SWL = (10mm x 10mm) x 80 x 0.4 Chain SWL = 100 x 80 x 0.4 Chain SWL = 3200kg

SWL for 10mm, Grade 40 chain?

Chain SWL = (Dmm²) x G x 0.3 Chain SWL = (Dmm x Dmm) x G x 0.3 Chain SWL = (10mm x 10mm) x 40 x 0.3 Chain SWL = 100 x 40 x 0.3 Chain SWL = 1200kg

Load Share

When using multiple hoists on a single lift the licensed rigger must ensure the motors provided can handle their share of the load plus an additional 20% - 50%

of their share depending on the number of hoists in operation for the lift

• 2 hoists - Each hoist must have a WLL to take an additional 20% of its load share

• 3 hoists - Each hoist must have a WLL to take an additional 33% of its load share

• 4 or more hoists - Each hoist must have a WLL to take an additional 50% of its load share

Vector ForcesWhen using slings to rig an item, the angle of those slings greatly effects the load those slings are holding. !The below chart gives clear indications of the percent increase depending on the degree of the angle.
