Founded in 1382, Winchester Collegehas the longest unbroken history of anyEnglish school. The Founder, William ofWykeham, was Bishop of Winchester1366-1404 and twice Chancellor ofEngland. He used his wealth to develop agrand scheme of education, partly toincrease the number of educated priestsin church and government, sections ofsociety badly affected by the Black Death.In 1379 Wykeham founded New College,Oxford, and began to acquire land onwhich in 1387 he began construction ofthis College, which opened in 1393. TheFoundation provided for the education ofseventy Scholars by two Masters, with aWarden, ten Fellows, three Chaplains,sixteen Quiristers and three Lay Clerksto administer the College and providereligious services and music in Chapel.

Today, the College educates around 700boys aged 13 to 18, with the seventyScholars still housed in the medievalbuildings. The remaining ‘Commoners’live in 10 boarding houses beyond thecentral campus.

Concentrating on the medieval heart ofthe College, guided tours last around anhour and include: Chamber Court, whichtakes its name from the Scholars’ andFellows’ chambers enclosing it, the 14th-century Gothic Chapel with one of theearliest examples of a wooden vaultedroof, College Hall, the original Scholars’dining room, School, the 17th centuryredbrick schoolroom and the medievalcloisters.

Admission to the College is by guidedtour only.Tours are available all year exceptbetween Christmas & New Year.

Groups of fewer than 10 individuals neednot pre-book.

Standby tours of the College are availableat the following times and start at thePorters’ Lodge, College Street:

Please note we are a working school andtours may sometimes be cancelled due toa College event. Additional tours may berun during the summer months, pleasecheck the website for up to datedetails.Tour times may vary. Pleasecheck website for updates.

Group ToursA group tour for parties of 10 or morecan be arranged at times to suit;pre-booking is essential. Tours in foreignlanguages may be available but must berequested when booking and are subjectto the guide’s availability. School groupsare welcome.
