footballing millions, Titan Poker havesnapped up a new team of poker pros totake them through to 2012. Titan recently signed up Canadian pro SorelMizzi to lead the team and have now addeda further six players to their roster.Sam Trickett, who won the GUKPT Lutonleg in 2008 for more than £100,000, is theteam’s only UK representative and will joinFrench pros Florian Desgouttes and Yann

The US Department of Justice haspretty much run ruff-shod on anyonline gaming person or company it

has decided to go after with basically alldefendants reaching plea bargain deals orsettling out of court. That was until theyarrested Australian payment processor DanielTzvetkoff, whose company has processedsome $500 million in online pokertransactions.Tzvetkoff entered a not guilty plea, andplans to fight the DOJ to the end claimingthat poker is not gambling, and therefore isnot illegal. The DOJ has been very picky inprosecuting online gaming by going after thepayment processors like Tzvetkoff –andpreviously Douglas Rennick who pleadedguilty to a lesser offense. The DOJ has alsosettled out of court with Party Poker, andtheir founder, for hundreds of millions ofdollars, and has prosecuted BetonSportsCEO David Carruthers.

Tzvetkoff’s plan to fight against the DOJmay be a huge moment in the history ofonline poker, and may finally put to bed thegambling or game of skill argument onceand for all. It’s likely that many pro-onlinegaming groups will jump to Tzvetkoff’sdefense if it seems plausible he could winthe case –on the other hand, if it looks likehis strategy will fail you can be certain theywill steer clear of this trial entirely.

Before going in depth with theconcept of Expected Value (EV) inpoker, some math is needed. Inmathematics, the EV of a variable

is defined as the probability-weighted sum ofthe possible values for the variable inquestion. This may sound complicated, but itreally isn’t that bad. Let’s look at the simpleexample of rolling dice. In this case thepossible values and probabilities are asfollows:

• 1 will come up in 1 out of 6 rolls on averageyielding a probability of 1/6 = 16.7%

• 2: 16.7%• 3: 16.7%• 4: 16.7%• 5: 16.7%• 6: 16.7%

So the EV for rolling a die is: (1 x 0.167) + (2 x0.167) + (3 x 0.167) and so on. In total thisadds up to 3.5.

When it comes to EV in poker there arebasically two situations to consider, namely EVwhen you call a bet and EV when you make abet.

In both cases, I will define EV in poker as theamount you will be paid back on average on a$1 bet (including your original $1 bet):

• EV < 1 – If you always play hands with anEV of less than 1 you will lose on average

• EV = 1 – If you always play hands with an EVequal to 1 you will break even on average

• EV > 1 – If you always play hands with anEV of more than 1 you will win on average

So ALWAYS aim to play hands with an EVlarger than 1!!!

EV IN POKER WHEN CALLING A BET

It is pretty straight forward to calculate yourEV when calling a bet. It’s simply the product

GX SPORTS BETTING

With so many people travelling to Vegas for the World Series of Poker we here at GX thought this would be an excellenttime to go over the basic rules of sportbook betting. This isn’t as easy as buying a Superbowl square in your office pool ormaking a friendly wager with a friend while watching a game. The sportsbooks in Vegas are going to offer a massive selectionand once you’re at the window you will want to know how to place your bet like the pros do.

AUTO RACINGBetting on Nascar has exploded over the last few yearsto become one of the most popular sports to bet on. Racing and golf bets are similar as it usually involvespicking a winner. The board will usually list 20 or sonames and a field option (all others) with the odds outbeside them. If the board lists Jeff Gordon at 15-1 oddsthat means if you place $10 on him and you win thenyou get $150 plus your $10 back, for a total of $160.

Driver OddsDale Jarrett 4-1Jeff Gordon 15-1Bobby Labonte 100-1

There’s also racing matchup propositions where twodrivers are paired against each other in a head-to-headwager with the odds set by the casino. The driver withthe better finish wins (both drivers must start the racefor the bet to be live). For example, a matchup may pit Jeff Burton (minus 145)against Casey Atwood (plus 125). If you bet $145 on thefavored Burton, the payoff would be $100 plus your $145back, for a total of $245. If you bet $100 on the underdogAtwood, the payoff would be $125 plus your $100 back, for a total of $225.

Driver Money LineJeff Burton -145Casey Atwood +125

Some sports books also post unusual auto racingpropositions such as the over/under on the number of

cautions in a race, or which car manufacturer (GM, Fordor Dodge) will win the race.Betting lines can be found on NASCAR races as well ason the various open-wheel circuits.

BASEBALLWhen betting on baseball each team will have a numbernext to it on the board. When you go to the window tellthe ticket writer the number of your team and theamount of your bet.If your team wins, you win. The payout depends on theodds, and baseball uses a “Money Line”

Example: Pitcher listed is starting pitcher

Bet No Team Pitcher Odds Total Money line301 Dodgers Brown +110 7.5 Over -110302 Braves Maddux -120 Under -110

Note: The bottom team is always listed as the hometeam unless otherwise noted.

The Braves' odds are -120, meaning a $12 bet would win$10, for a return of $22. The Dodgers' odds are +110,meaning a $10 bet would win $11, for a return of $21.

On Today's Line we use a different format, the idea isthe same. You will not find the odds for the Underdog. The Underdog's odds are based on what the casino hasfor its line. Most use a "Dime Line" or something closeto that.

You have just seen an example of a dime line.Braves -120Dodgers +110

A 20-cent line would be this.Braves -130Dodgers +110

Here are two more examples of a dime line and a 20-cent line. See whether you can tell them apart.Braves -105Dodgers -105Braves -120Dodgers Even

You can arrive at the underdog's price by looking at thefavorite's line. Dime lines are slowly disappearing assports books look to make a larger profit during what istraditionally the slowest betting season. Several booksstill offer dime lines.Money lines change constantly. The listed money linethe time you make your bet may be different from themoney line when the game starts. The listed line on yourticket is your official odds, unless the starting pitcher ischanged. This is explained later.

Total: Total runs scored in a game. Also called theover/under.

You may wager that the total score of the game will bemore or less than the number listed. It makes nodifference which team wins. Simply add the final scoresof each team. The payout, unless stated otherwise, isfigured at odds of 10/11. (-110)

Note: When betting a total, these rules apply:(a) The game must go nine innings, or 8 1/2 innings ifthe home team wins.

More importantly, however, was the fact that up untiljust days before the veryrunning of this year’s

Preakness, its future to remain in Marylandwas in serious doubt. And equallyremarkable, the 3rd leg of the Triple Crown, the 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes, coming up June 5, 2010 at Belmont Park, inElmont, NY, also remains in a fiscal crisis.

And it is with the Triple Crown races clearlyin mind that it is worth exploring the presentstate of the thoroughbred industry’schallenges away from the track that oncecould be counted on to provide the essentialbusinesses necessary to support thosehorses we get to see on race day.

Largely, it comes down to the horsebreeding farms and all of the ancillary

businesses that have evolved from it, andthat earn their livelihood by benefit of thehorse racing industry, which have taken abig hit over the past 2 years. However, theglobal recession has but exacerbated anindustry clearly in decline for the pastdecade.

Yet, the actual running of thoroughbreds isdependent upon the farms and businesses

.MAURICE EDU.Midfielder

Before the Czech friendly Edu wouldhave been top pick to partnerMichael Bradley in central midfield,

but after Holden's performance, it’s beenopened up. However, given his experiencein that role, expect Bradley to use Edu, whoenjoyed a good club season in Scotland withRangers. Edu is also capable of playing incentral defense, which no doubt cementedhis place in the final roster.

.CLARENCE GOODSON.Defender

Although he was partiallyresponsible for the CzechRepublic's third goal in the match

when he failed to clear a dangerous ball,Goodson nonetheless cemented his spot inthe final 23 with an impressive display onoffense. Goodson will likely be nothing morethan a substitute, but given the uncertaintyof Onyewu's fitness, he may end up playingan important role for Team USA.

.STEVE CHERUNDOLO.Defender

He is unlikely to crack the starting11 unless Onyewu is unable toplay. However, if that happens,

Cherundolo will likely be the first oneBradley calls upon. Injuries cost himappearances in the 2000 Olympics, 2002World Cup, and 2009 FIFA ConfederationsCup, but otherwise has been a mainstay forthe national squad. This will be his secondWorld Cup, but his third time on the roster.

.JAY DEMERIT.Defender

Fortunately, Jay DeMerit is back inaction following an extended absencedue to a scratched eyeball. Ouch!

DeMerit is a relative newcomer to the nationalteam, and a late-bloomer at age 30. Hereceived his first cap in 2007 but earned hisspot on Bradley's roster during the 2009Confederations Cup when he partneredOnyewu in central defense. If Gooch ishealthy, he'll do it again this summer. If not, look for a DeMerit/Bocanegra combination inthe middle of the U.S. back line leavingDeMerit possibly on the subs list.

.JONATHAN SPECTOR.Defender

Assuming Onyewu regains matchfitness in time for the World Cup,Bradley is likely to use the same

back line that earned him a second-placefinish in last summer's Confederations Cup.That means Jonathan Spector will start at fullback. Although his club form was shaky thisseason he is still the best right back the U.S.has to offer and deserves a place in Bradley'sstarting 11. With an accurate cross and thespeed to move down the flanks, Spector canalso be a threat on offense. If needed, he canalso fill in at center back.

.STUART HOLDEN.Midfielder

With Bradley, Donovan, andDempsey locked in theirrespective positions, there is

only one midfield spot left in the starting 11,and who will end up there is the biggestquestion mark for the national team. StuartHolden has definitely made his case. With adeft foot on set pieces, he had a hand inboth US goals in the friendly against theCzechs. He is also capable of playing anymidfield position, making him a valuablemember of USA's squad.

When the game’s best players go head to head over 64 matches at this summer’sWorld Cup, the one word on everybody’s lips will be ‘Goals’. Who will score them, how many will they score, where will they be scored? Wally Downes assesses all.Words WALLY DOWNES Pictures ACTION IMAGES

Carlos Alberto, Dennis Bergkamp,Johann, Cruyff: just three namessynonymous with great world cup

goals. But you won’t find anyone willing totake a bet on who will score the prettiestgoal at South Africa 2010. Quantity rulesover quality when it comes to the goldenboot, but there has been a distinct lack ofgreed in front of goal in recent years.

You have to go as far back as 1970 for thelast time a player hit a two-figure haul -Gerd Muller crashing home 10 for theGermans - as since then, six has been themagic number in six of the last nineWorld Cups.

Ronaldo raised a few eyebrows when heshowed up in Japan and Korea in 2002looking rather portly, but he was hungry forgoals as he topped the table with ahandsome eight notches. This year there is

a plethora of talent on show, old heads andnew blood, world soccer is in fine shapeand there are goals galore throughout theworld’s leagues week in, week out. Ifpoints mean prizes then goals at this WorldCup could certainly make you money.

Argentinaonly just made the finals after scrapingthrough a play-off, and although they have

a lot of talent, it could be the influence oftheir manager that proves decisive. Messiis at the top of list to be the top goal scorerat 11/1.

They will also be acutely aware that the chances ofa Briton winning any major tournament (World Cup we’re looking atyou) are not nearly as high as they would have us believe.

And let’s not forget that poor Wimbledon lands smack in the middleof the World Cup this year, leaving many of its fan on otherchannels. The Last WordStupendously quick and surprisingly smallgiven Mr. Hennessey’s long running loveaffair with tuning big muscle cars, theVenom GT is a hybrid in many senses;combining expertise from the U.S. and UKto create a super-powered V8 that is ascapable on the twisty bits as it is on a dragstrip. One can only hope in this instance theTrans-Atlantic partnership results in abrilliantly balanced Supercar rather than aBush-Blair generated war-zone, althoughwith 1200 Horsepower to feed, the extra oilwill probably come in handy.

It’s still early days to speculate on the successof the Venom GT, although when you look atthe build quality and size of the Elise and thenincrease the power almost tenfold, it is

guaranteed to get the pulse racing. Then mostprobably kill you. And if it does, it’s a seriouslyexpensive way to go at $600,000. I justwonder whether $600k is really going to buy arefined and exotic supercar, or the rich man’sequivalent of a Vauxhall Corsa with a great bigturbo strapped to it.

The combination of a British chassis andAmerican power plant is a formula that hasrarely been adopted. However, if thesuccess of the legendary AC Cobra isanything to go by, we are in for a serioustreat with the Venom GT. Watch thisspace…
