Message from the Director

Dear DCLC Supporters,

For DCLC, 2018-2019 was a year of exciting growth and change. New staff were added, a new site in Upper Darby opened, and new students came through our door to take steps to realize their dreams and goals.

But growing is not just about getting bigger. To grow, an organization—like a plant or flower—has to have healthy roots and a good environment to foster that growth.

Because of added funding from government grants and consistent support from individual donors, DCLC has been able to build on its strengths. Every student who chooses to study at DCLC has always received tailored instruction and support to help them achieve their goals. The changes in 2018-2019 have increased the depth and breadth of these services designed to support students.

With an expanded teaching staff and a new head of curriculum and instruction, students now benefit from instruction that is even more targeted to their needs. Highly qualified teachers share best practices and contribute to a standards-based curriculum that has been “road tested” [developed based on] teachers’ real-life in-class experiences. Online testing that generates a profile of each student’s strengths and weaknesses also bolsters the level of instruction.

Adult students have a better chance of succeeding when they keep all of their life goals and challenges in sight while pursuing their education and improving their skills. To better assist students in overcoming barriers and challenges that stand in the way of their goals, DCLC has strengthened its Student Support Services with a new director, full-time case managers, and additional employment coaches. It is especially exciting to see students get jobs that use their newly acquired skills and that put them on the path of their long-term goals.

And DCLC has followed the real-estate motto “location, location, location” and opened a site in Upper Darby. Due to strong partnerships with Upper Darby School District, the Delaware County Library system, and others, DCLC was already a steady presence in Upper Darby, where nearly 20% of residents were born outside of the U.S. Our new site is near the 69th Street Transportation hub. It provides classroom space and student access to employment coaches. It also allows us to deepen our connections to the Upper Darby community. For example, we have reached out to local employers in the area and have been able to place students like Jesula (see story on page 5) in jobs that are close to their home and flexible enough to let them continue their studies.

So we are grateful for all of the many supporters who helped make this year of growth possible, providing an environment of possibility and encouragement that allowed us to take risks and want more for our students. We also thank all who have been part of DCLC over the years, providing roots that anchored and directed our growth. We look forward to sharing the depth and breadth of our services with adults who are brave enough to try to transform their lives.

With gratitude,

Kate McGeever

Thanks to funders and supporters, DCLC received a brand-new roof in the summer of 2018. In the years leading up to the project, DCLC received a $100,000 Community Block Grant from Delaware County Council, a $1,000 Community Block Grant from the City of Chester, a $15,000 grant from the Ethel Sargent Clark Smith Memorial Fund, and a $20,000 matching grant from the McClean Contributionship to fund the massive project of replacing the leaky roof in a building that is more than 250 years old. Hundreds of individuals also made new or increased donations to help fund the project, which were generously matched by the McClean Contributionship grant.

In addition, a Caesar’s Community Foundation Grant from Harrah’s Philadelphia Racetrack and Casino helped DCLC purchase a new sign for its front lawn and make other exterior improvements.

Here Chris Albrecht, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Harrah’s Philadelphia in Chester, cuts the ceremonial ribbon to celebrate the new roof and new exterior signage Also pictured (left to right) are: DCLC Board Members Jennifer Stock, Lois Snyder, and Rick Durante; Chester City Council Member Portia West; Delaware County Council Chair John McBlain; DCLC Executive Director Kate McGeever; and DCLC Board Member Dave Marshall.

DCLC Student Most Bilkis Sultana became a U.S. citizen on April 16, 2019.

Most knew how to read and write English from her job as a nurse in her home country of Bangladesh, where medical records were kept in English.

Most has been working on her speaking and listening skills, says her DCLC English Instructor James Stein. She has gained fluency and confidence, and now is not afraid to speak up in class.

Most’s next goal is to get a driver’s license, which will help her look for work related to the nursing field.

Jesula Petit, originally from Haiti, studies Adult Basic Education (ABE) at DCLC. Within a few months of enrolling with DCLC, Jesula met with a DCLC employment coach to get assistance looking for a job. Jesula received help creating a resume and completing applications and soon landed a part-time job at the Studio Movie Grill at 69th Street in Upper Darby, close to where she lives.

The job has helped Jesula start her life in the U.S. and allowed her to continue her studies. But Jesula has bigger plans for her future, so she once again is working with a DCLC employment coach. This time Jesula is looking for work in the helping professions and has applied to work in a day care facility.

Jesula is happy to be studying and to be taking steps toward a better future. Says Jesula, “I am focused on my studies to improve my English and to get my GED, and then I want to keep going to achieve my dream of becoming a nurse.”

At right, Jesula Petit (right) and DCLC Volunteer Tutor Annette O’Connor meet in the Upper Darby Municipal Library for a tutoring session.

Essay Writers Celebrate the Spirit of Volunteering

DCLC students who entered the 2019 “People Helping People” contest, sponsored by Sun East Federal Credit Union, enjoyed pizza and conversation at a party held in their honor. Here DCLC instructor Robert Lee (left) shares a lighthearted moment with some of his ESL students who entered the contest.

At the party, students read short passages from their essays, which described their experiences of volunteering in the community. Byron Butler won the contest’s $200 first prize for writing about helping out at his church.

Taking the Literacy Message to the Airwaves

TV Host Quincy Harris poses with Kevin Morgan of DCLC during a taping of The Q Show, which airs on FOX29 Philadelphia. Several DCLC staff members and students attended the taping, which included a community spotlight segment covering Delaware County Literacy Council, its mission, and its work in the community.
