1 Title Registered Nurse/Midwife Career Group Health & Wellbeing – Nursing Classification Level 6.1 Immediate Responsible Officers Director of Health Care and Family Services Sub-school Strathalbyn Executive Leader Head of Schools PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The School Registered Nurse/Midwife assists with the provision of professional high quality health care service and provides holistic, nursing/midwifery services to those who attend the School, including students and staff, in a primary heath care setting; consolidates knowledge and skills that develop in capability through continuous professional development and experience; and accepts accountability for own standards of nursing/midwifery care, including responsibilities delegated to other health care staff. This role is required to work two days per week during school terms only. ADDITIONAL REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Registered Nurse/Midwife; Reports to the Director of Health Care and Family Services as the Immediate Responsible Officer; Is also responsible to the Campus Principal; Is accountable to the Head of Schools for the provision of nursing related services to the School; Maintains cooperative, productive and collaborative working relationships with all members of the Wellbeing Team and School community; and Provides leadership and supervision to other health care providers within the School. A CHRISTIAN EXAMPLE Each employee is required, in connection with their work, to behave in a manner consistent with the principles and beliefs and in accordance with the Christian ethos of the School, as contained and interpreted in the Vision, Mission, Core Purpose, Statement of Faith and Core Values. They provide a specifically Christian role model and example: to all students and families associated with the School, as well as others outside the School community; of a faith-filled and Christ-centred life; performing their role diligently and with a servant heart; showing that the body of Christ has many parts, and each part has a role to play that other parts are dependent upon, just as each employee is dependent upon others. In their interactions with students, parents, other staff, contractors and visitors, employees will be sensitive to the needs and circumstances of others, showing grace and forgiveness, and always being prepared to speak or act as an example of a follower of Christ. SUMMARY OF WORK REQUIREMENTS 1. Improves nursing/midwifery care practices by;

Providing direct nursing/midwifery care and/or individual case management to students, including overseeing and administering prescribed medication to students, in accordance with legal requirements and School Policy; supporting the special needs of students such as toileting and personal hygiene needs as required;

Providing first aid support and guidance to Provide First Aiders; Assessing individual student needs, planning and implementing or coordinating appropriate

service delivery; Communicating effectively with parents/guardians, on health related issues concerning

students, and co-ordinating student health management plans, as required; Planning and coordinating services as required in meeting individual’s health care needs, eg

organising and promoting screening and immunisation programmes for students; Maintaining health records in a professional manner and in line with legislative requirements; Providing health counselling, health education and acting in a resource capacity to the school

community, to improve the health outcomes of students; Providing assistance in the provision of Health, pastoral care and personal development

training for students; Maintaining professional standards and high level of confidentiality; Proactively promote good health within the School environment, to students; Providing any of the above services to staff if/when the need arises within the School.

2. Contributes to the human resource management by:

Reviewing decisions, assessments and recommendations from less experienced staff, and other members of the School wellbeing team;

Providing support and guidance to less experienced health care team members, Provide First Aiders, first aiders, staff, teachers, volunteers and others;

Liaising with relevant personnel to ensure all staff maintain required first aid certification and that adequate records are kept;

Delivering first aid refreshers and emergency first aid management training (including CPR, Asthma and Epipen) to staff, and maintain associated records;

Providing assistance in policy and procedure review and development, in consultation with the Director of Health Care and Family Services.

3. Contributes to the material management by: Providing supervision and guidance regarding the School’s first aid equipment and

consumable supplies including, but not limited to, all first aid kits throughout the School; Providing support and guidance regarding first aid equipment and medications for school

camps, excursions and retreats; Managing the School’s Health Centre efficiently and purchase of all school medical supplies

cost effectively.

4. Contributes to the achievement of best practice and, where relevant, facilitates the development and application of relevant research by:

Participating in quality assurance and/or evaluative research activities within the school setting;

Using foundation theoretical knowledge and evidence based guidelines and applying these to a range of activities to achieve agreed outcomes.

5. Contributes to the achievement of professional expertise through ongoing personal professional development:

Continuing own professional development and seek learning opportunities; Developing and maintaining own professional development portfolio of learning and

experience;

Attending periodic mandatory training updates including, but not limited to: Manual Handling, Basic Life support, Drug Calculation, Mandatory Notification training, Provide First Aid training, Anaphylaxis training, Mental Health First Aid training;

Engaging in reflective reviews with Immediate Responsible Officer and participating in the Performance Management process as required.

6. Contributes to a safe and healthy workplace by: Following WHS instructions and policies; Reporting accidents and hazards; Generally caring for their own safety and that of others, including volunteers, students and

parents, that may possibly be affected by actions or inaction; and Actively participating in rehabilitation and return-to-work programs.

7. Attends professional development and training required by the School, and actively seek opportunities to increase knowledge, experience and skills held.

8. Attends, and contributes to, staff, team and faculty meetings and, where appropriate opportunities present, becoming involved in the life of the School and School events.

9. Performs other Duties as directed

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA Attributes that must be held in order to perform the job to a satisfactory standard. Qualifications, education and professional memberships Education/ Vocational Qualifications

Registered as a Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds a current practicing certificate.

Abilities, aptitudes and skills Personal Abilities/Aptitudes

Effective communication skills including, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation. Ability to lead, manage and motivate a team of health professionals. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary and multicultural team Ability to prioritise workload. Ability to be creative, innovative and flexible when approaching issues within an educational

school setting. Demonstrated ability to foster a workplace environment that develops staff potential.

Skills Competence Demonstrated competency in Basic Life Support. Demonstrated competency in Advance First Aid. Demonstrated sound computing skills with basic competence in Microsoft Office suite.

Experience Registered Nurse with at least 5 years’ acute care setting, full time equivalent, post

registration experience. Demonstrated competence in the relevant area of nursing practice in accordance with the

appropriate standards of practice. Knowledge

Knowledge and understanding of the role of the Registered General Nurse/Midwife within an educational setting.

Understanding of adolescent and adult health issues. Understanding of the requirements of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (SA)

Act 2010.

Understanding of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competencies for the Registered and Enrolled Nurse and Midwifes in Recommended Domains.

Knowledge and understanding of the ANMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia.

Knowledge and understanding of legislative responsibilities for WHS, Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation and Equal Opportunity.

Knowledge of Quality Improvement Systems and Approved Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace as applied to an educational setting.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA Attributes which are not essential to job performance, but which enhance or extend performance. Qualifications, education and professional memberships

Where applicable, qualifications relevant to practice setting. Experience

Experience in Paediatrics. Experience in Child, Adolescent and Family Health. Experience in a Primary Health Care setting. Experience as a School Nurse. Experience in Immunisation Endorsement.

Knowledge Knowledge of contemporary professional nursing issues.
