Letter from the President, Stephanie D. Moore Can you believe that it is April 2015 already? What a great year (the new Petroleum
Club is fabulous) this is turning out to be even with the downturn in oil prices. I am so
pleased that our members have chosen to stick with HADOA, and we still have many
great things planned for you for the rest of 2015. Many of you are discovering new
ways to save your company money which has also been one of the primary goals for
the HADOA Board of Directors. Keep doing this, it is important for all of our jobs!
As President of HADOA this year, I have thought long and hard about what I wanted
2015 to be about and have focused on several goals for us to achieve together. In addi-
tion to the great speakers that have already attended our luncheons, we have a fantas-
tic line-up for the April seminar as well as the rest of the year! Finding charismatic
speakers with critical topics for you is one of the most important functions the HADOA
board will do. With this in mind, if there are topics you would like to further your
knowledge about or speakers that you have seen that stand out in your memory, please
contact any of our board members and let us know! This is your organization and edu-
cation is what your membership fees pay for.
Additional goals for 2015 include a focus on increasing our membership and attendance
at HADOA events, continued improvements on the new HADOA website (please pardon
our construction as our webmaster continues to hammer out those imperfections) and
compiling information to add to the website on the history of HADOA. Looking at each
of these items, if you have not renewed your membership for 2015 or continue to attend
our events as a non-member, please consider joining. On the historical goal, late last
year, long time member, friend and mentor Sarah Broyles gave me a stack of newslet-
ters and correspondence from the late 1980’s and it was really neat to read through. If
you have been a member of HADOA for more than 10 years, first, thank you so much
for supporting such a great organization, second, if you have any pictures, articles and/
or memories you would like to share, please contact Sara Galloway as we would love to
share it with all of the new members in the industry!
In support of the annual NADOA Institute, this year we will be giving away two full schol-
arships at our May luncheon. These scholarships will help with
travel and lodging expenses as well as paying for registration.
Stay tuned for additional details, coming soon.
Again, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support of
HADOA. I am looking forward to an even better rest of the year.
Best Regards,
Stephanie D. Moore

On Wednesday, February 18th, Austin Brister, Associate Attorney with
McGinnis Lochridge, spoke to HADOA membership. The title of his speech was
“Restrictions on Assignability: an Overview of the Ties that Commonly Bind
Oil and Gas Properties”. Austin spoke of the four provisions that often come into
play, and sometimes define, the acquisition and divestiture of oil and gas assets, in-
cluding preferential rights to purchase, consents to assign, area of mutual interest,
and maintenance of uniform interests. Austin covered that the central aspect of each
to consider were the contractual provisions when selling to a third party. For exam-
ple, with preferential rights to purchase, must first be offered to the preferential right
holder; the consent to assign must first get the holder’s approval, the Maintenance of
Uniform Interest is the interest is sold uniformly
across the entire defined area. Austin provided
how to deal with these different provisions from
the perspective of the Buyer, Seller, & right hold-
er. This was a very informative presentation that
was well received by HADOA’s membership. We
would like to say THANKS again to Austin for
joining us at our February luncheon!

On Wednesday, March 18th, Stephen Riner, Owner/Attorney with
the Law Office of Stephen N. Riner spoke to the HADOA membership.,
with the topic “Title Opinions: the Good, The Bad, & The Ugly”. Ste-
ve explained his process for preparing a title opinion and the importance
that should be placed on the value of the abstract. Steve further went into
detail on the hardships that field landman deal with when working with
various Texas county clerks’ records and the importance of direct/
indirect indices when building abstracts. Steve also reviewed those title
requirements that a division order analyst should note and the documen-
tation that would be needed to cure certain title defects. Steve was very
well received by the audience and gave out two $50 bills at the event as
prizes for those who could answer two Texas history questions. Mark
Gresham was the winner of both cash prizes! We would like to say
THANKS again to Steve for joining us at our March luncheon!

When Russell Schetroma passed away Thursday, he left behind a legacy and will be remembered as an oil
and gas lawyer, former Meadville attorney, active church member, friend and a lover of dogs.
Schetroma, 67, died in his sleep in Texas. He was working for Steptoe and Johnson PLLC as an oil and gas
attorney. Schetroma had been with Steptoe and Johnson since 2010 when his law firm of Culbertson,
Weiss, Schetroma & Schug P.C. merged, according to Susan Brewer, Steptoe and Johnson chief executive
officer. Schetroma served as a managing member of the Steptoe & Johnson Meadville office and also the
firm’s Houston office.
“He was a wonderful person,” Brewer said. “He will be greatly missed.”
Schetroma was many things to many people.
To Max Weiss he was a partner and friend. To Meadville councilman LeRoy Stearns, he was a dinner com-
panion. He also was an active church member to Rev. Sarah Roncolato of Stone United Methodist Church,
a very good Meadville attorney to former Meadville Mayor Richard Friedberg and the “Dean of Pennsylva-
nia Energy Law” to Brewer.
Weiss and Schetroma shared a college room, meals and a law practice over a 43-year period. The J.D. Dick-
inson School of Law roommates came to Meadville in 1972 after looking all over the state for a “great
town,” according to Weiss. The pair bought the Stuart A. Culbertson law practice and made Meadville their
home. Weiss said Schetroma and his parents spent Christmas together for 25 years.
“He was a part of the family,” Weiss said.
In 2010, when Culbertson, Weiss, Schetroma & Schug P.C. merged with Steptoe and Johnson, Weiss said it
was a great fit for Schetroma.
“He was at the very peak of his career,” Weiss said. “(Steptoe and Johnson) was the dream he always want-
ed to achieve — and he achieved it.”
Brewer said Schetroma was instrumental in Steptoe and Johnson moving into several new states, including
Texas.
“He was brilliant, he was a master of oil and gas law in numerous states,” Brewer said. “He was the godfa-(Continued on page 7)

On behalf of the Houston Association of Division Order Analysts, we would like to express our deepest condolences
to the family of Russell Schetroma. Russell was working for Steptoe & Johnson, LLC as an attorney when he died in
his sleep on March 12th. To say Russell was larger than life character would be an understatement. He will always be
remembered as a highly respected oil & gas attorney with a charismatic charm that influenced many people. Personal-
ly I dealt with Pennsylvania properties for many years & I felt that Russell’s vast knowledge (shared at industry
events) helped advance my career. Russell will indeed be missed by many.

In Memory of Russel l Scher t romaIn Memory of Russel l Scher t roma ther of oil and gas law.”
In Meadville, Schetroma is remembered as a former city attorney who excelled in Pennsylvania municipali-
ty law.
“He was well regarded in Harrisburg for his knowledge of municipal law,” Friedberg said.
Friedberg worked with Schetroma for 12 years while Schetroma was the city attorney.
“He was vigorous for his clients — as many attorneys are,” Friedberg said.
Friedberg said he hadn’t seen Schetroma very much lately because Schetroma’s Steptoe and Johnson’s du-
ties kept him out of Meadville quite a bit.
Stearns recalled Schetroma served on the board of the Crawford County Humane Society at the time the
society opened its thrift store on Park Avenue.
“He certainly loved his dogs,” Stearns said.
Weiss said Schetroma brought his dog to work with him and the dog had an email account pending. Steptoe
and Johnson said Schetroma was fond of saying, “I can only hope to have been as good a person as each of
my canine friends thought I was.”Stearns said he and Schetroma shared rides to Harrisburg where the pair
attended Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities functions together. Stearns said Schetroma was
very active within PLCM and served on several committees.
Friedberg said one little known fact regarding Schetroma was he volunteered to rewrite the municipal code
for third-class cities.
“He was a strong and competent voice for municipal government,” Friedberg said.
Stearns recalled that 98 percent of the meals he shared with Schetroma was chicken wings. Stearns said he
always joked about the fat content in the wings. Stearns said that Schetroma would reply, “When you deep
fry the wings, you fry all the fat out of them.”
“He’ll be greatly missed, not only as a friend, but as a historian of Meadville,” Stearns said.
Roncolato said Schetroma was very active at Stone UMC as a member, Sunday school teacher and had
served on many committees and boards.
“He had a great mind and a great heart,” Roncolato said. “And we’ll miss him.”

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who voted me into this position and trusted me with
the financial wellbeing of HADOA. It is hard to believe that we have made it through the first quarter of
the year, and that we have already had two luncheons and are closing in on the seminar. At the beginning
of 2015, the HADOA board was skeptical about the financial outlook for the year; to use a buzz term from
the office, we are currently operating in a “low price environment.” The board built the HADOA budget
with the idea that we would have less attendance for the luncheons due to company cutbacks. Fortunately,
we have seen the exact opposite thus far - the attendance has been exceptional. The February luncheon had
121 registrants, with 103 in attendance. The March luncheon had 132 registrants, with 116 in attendance.
We have noticed many of you pay your own way to these luncheons, and we would like to express our grat-
itude for the continued support. If your company is still paying for these events, please make sure you reach
out and thank them as well. It is easy for things like this to get cut from corporate budgets during a “low
price environment.”
One thing to remember in regards to luncheons: It is understandable that life happens and things
come up which prevent you from attending a luncheon that you have registered for. But please note that we
provide a count of registered attendees to the Petroleum Club in advance of the event. This is the number
that we are required to pay for plus any additional attendees. Because of this, we ask that if you cannot
make it to a previously registered luncheon, please contact one of the board members to withdraw your reg-
istration by the Friday before the luncheon. This will prevent us from paying for people who could not
make the luncheon and thereby save HADOA money. The more money we can save, the better the door
prizes will be at the Holiday luncheon.
Thank you,
Chris Ramsey

How have you weathered out previous industry downturns?
I am only speaking from my personal experience. I have been in the industry
for over 30 years and have experience the ups and down in our industry. I have been
lucky enough not to have been laid off during any of the downturns. My career in the past
has mostly been with smaller companies where the Division Order Department was nor-
mally under staffed and usually not effected by layoffs. If I had knowledge of possible cuts
in my area I became proactive and began seeking information on companies that might be
in a position to add to their staff and made sure my resume was updated.
What advice do you have for our analysts who are experiencing their first industry down-
turn?
Networking! I believe networking is the best source to get your name out in the indus-
try. By networking you meet other professionals that will always share information with
you about their companies’ needs. Be proactive!. If you are affected by a company lay off
don’t burn bridges – no mater how bitter or upset you may be – you may need references
from your manager or supervisor later.
What actions or traits do you think have helped you progress successfully throughout your
career?
I believe being dependable, professional and ethical has allowed me to have a successful
career. Being a team player and working and sharing information makes you more valu-
able to your company. Accepting challenges, willingness to change and respecting your
co-workers will help make you an asset to your company.
What other advice do you have for our analysts who are just getting started in their careers?
Education! Get as much knowledge as possible. Take the extra step and get your certifi-
cation. The CDOA study guides offers so much information. Attend the local association
meeting and seminars, register for the webinars, read your newsletters and stay informed
as to what is happening in our industry and if possible attend the Institute.
An interview with NADOA’s President, Nancy Cemino, whose successful career
as a division order analyst for over 30 years has weathered several industry
downturns. Nancy currently works at EnerVest, Ltd as a Senior Advisor for Di-
vision Orders.
Thanks to Hailey Young for suggesting the interview topic. Have a topic you are interested learning more about?

Conducting business relationships and communicating in manners con-
sistent with professionalism applies to your behavior and communication
at our luncheons. Please refrain from having side conversations, speaking
on your phone, or using your phone for email/text for more than a brief
moment while our speaker is presenting. This is not only rude behavior
towards our speaker but also distracting for fellow members and other
luncheon attendees. Please also remember to silence your cellphones. We
understand urgent matters requiring your immediate attention may arise,
but please be courteous to the other attendees and step out of the room to

Article 9, Section 8 requires all members of the Board of Directors to
