Qualification
ENERGY STAR® for Solid State Lighting (LED Luminaires)Concerned about LED luminaires? Caution is prudent and to be expected. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) commissioned by the USlegislature, coordinated a thorough review of the current LED and com-pact fluorescent luminaires supplied to consumers. It included lighting in-dustry experts and research personnel with the purpose of drivingproduct requirements to satisfy customer expectations and encourage theuse of energy saving and sustainable solid state lighting products. Thiseffort resulted in a set of eligibility requirements for Solid State Lighting(LED luminaires) for ENERGY STAR® qualification. The requirements aresubstantially different from the current ENERGY STAR® program used incompact fluorescent. The core differences include color quality, light de-livered by the luminaire, power quality and reliability of the total luminaire. Five key qualification requirements form the foundation of the ENERGYSTAR® Standards - qualifications that the Halo Recessed LED has metand exceeded.
1. TESTING: Requires submission of qualified independent test lab datato obtain qualification. Halo LED complies with ENERGY STAR® SSLtest standards including IES LM-79-2008 and LM-80-2008 as per-formed by an independent test lab.
2. EFFICACY: The luminaire test data and submitted report must demon-strate a minimum of 35 lumens per watt and 575 lumens for the leastefficient LED, lowest efficient optic, and hottest luminaire configura-tion for the product group submitted for qualification.
3. COLOR: LED luminaire must demonstrate color uniformity across theaperture. For example, color of 3000K recessed LED (Like the HaloLED) must fall between 3045K±175K, and the color maintenancemust be within 0.007 (u’,v’) over the lifetime, and color range must fallwithin 7-Step Quadrangle.
4. POWER: The driver/power supply must have a power factor of >0.70and >0.90 for residential and non-residential respectively, meet FCCrequirements, sound rating of A and provide transient protection.
5. RELIABILITY: The LED luminaire must demonstrate 70% lumen main-tenance at 25,000 hours and 35,000 hours for residential and non-residential respectively, as calculated using the DOE’s linearextrapolation model. The LED luminaire must include a 3-year writtenwarranty provided with the product.
There are many more details to the solid state lighting standards that canbe found at the ENERGY STAR® website, www.energystar.gov.
Knowing that consumer confidence is very important to adopt LED energysaving luminaires, it is important early on to establish a set of require-ments to meet customer expectations. ENERGY STAR® for solid statelighting is the standard for high quality and reliable LED recessed down-lighting. Rest assured that Cooper Lighting along with the lighting industryand DOE are working hard to provide standards that encourage lightingproducts that reliably save energy and reduce our consumption of naturalresources.

The school district of Delta, British Columbia wanted to save onboth energy and maintenance costs. Their school theater, in con-junction with BC Hydro, commissioned the project to to replace72 – 200W incandescent luminaires with 72 – Halo LED’s operat-ing at less than 15W. This was a one-to-one retrofit that savedthe school district 93% on energy cost. The maintenance sched-ule on these luminaires had been a group relamp carried outtwice a year. The Halo LED delivered significant value by eliminat-ing the maintenance cost and reducing the risk to personnel andproperty associated with the re-lamping of this installation with itshigh vaulted ceilings. Halo LED delivers a product that is esti-mated to deliver over 70% of its initial lumens for over 16 years(based upon the school’s energy and maintenance costs).
The payback on this retrofit was 2.4 years including material, labor, energy savings and a rebate of $60 per luminaire from BC Hydro.
The pictures illustrate a spectacular lighting design providing adownlight architectural appeal while delivering even illumination.

Revolutionary Lighting Technology
An LED (Light Emitting Diode) also referred to as Solid State Lighting (SSL) iscomposed of various semiconductor materials and when an electrical currentpasses through the diode, the recombination of positive and negativecharges results in the emission of photons or light. Environmental and legislative awareness continues to drive demand for en-ergy efficient lighting solutions in all types of cases. LED luminaires are high-efficiency alternatives to less efficient light sources, such as fluorescent andincandescent. The Halo LED Module was the first solid state lighting deviceto qualify for the ENERGY STAR® rating. This rating guarantees that the HaloLED Module delivers effective lighting while also meeting very demandingand stringent energy efficient operating guidelines. Halo LED also meets therequirements of California Title 24 and International Energy ConservationCode for High Efficacy luminaires.

HALO LED contributes to lower environmental impact.
Reduces the Environmental Impact
The supplies of fossil fuels are diminishing due to high demand for energy.Since lighting constitutes a large percentage of electric generation capacity, ithas become a target for higher mandated efficiency standards. Changes in thelighting industry are driven by both energy legislation and by consumers whoare concerned with excessive consumption. The future of lighting is with high efficiency products that meet lower energyconsumption levels while not using hazardous materials like mercury and leadthat can damage the environment.
Halo LED luminaires not only
reduce your energy cost but they
also benefit the environment.
By lowering the demand for
electricity, power plants can
generate less energy and lower
the amount of carbon emissions
discharged into the environment.
HALO LED Environmental Benefits
7HALO®
HALO LED helps reduce carbon emissions .
LED lighting provides a way to reduce the energy de-mands of lighting in homes and commercial facilities.Lighting energy consumption cost has been estimated tobe as high as 40% in certain commercial facilities. TheHalo LED High Efficacy recessed downlight reduces en-ergy demand thereby reducing carbon emissions whichare a primary cause of the “green house effect” leading toglobal warming.
The Halo LED luminaire is more efficientthan traditional light sources consuming75% less energy than a 65 watt incandes-cent lamp while delivering more light. HaloLED offers additional savings when dimmingalong with user control of the lighted envi-ronments.
LED lighting helps conserve the planet’s resources while help-ing to achieve significant energy cost savings. Halo LED is mer-cury-free, PCB-free and lead-free and thus does not needspecial handling to dispose of properly. This downlight solutionreduces carbon emissions and conserves natural resourceswhile diminishing the concerns of toxic substances in the watersupply resulting from improper disposal. Halo provides solu-tions with LED’s that make it easy to be environmentally re-sponsible.
Traditional incandescent technology only provides 10%light and the remaining 90% energy is heat that adds thermal load to an air conditioning system. Halo LEDsaves additional energy by reducing cooling demandcaused by older lighting technologies. In warmer cli-mates, the load of incandescent lamps on the HVACsystem can be as much as 400% greater than a com-parable LED. So with Halo LED, significant reduction inair conditioning load can result in lower energy cost in-cluding lowered peak demand charges.

HALO LED reduces operational cost in the Hospitality Industry
Lobbies and More
The Halo LED downlight is a perfect choice for the hospitality industry due tothe sustained light levels provided by the LED integration. The Halo LED pro-vides lower operating costs per fixture and the difference can be significantwith a large number of fixtures utilized in an installation. Since there is limitedinfrared and no ultraviolet emissions, artwork and wall hangings are protectedfrom fading. The basic “downlight” look and operation of the Halo LED allowsit to easily blend in with other fixtures so it does its job without calling undueattention to itself.
Halo LED luminaires are ideal for
creating virtually maintenance-
free public spaces. Hotels, restau-
rants and night-time businesses
will reduce expensive electric bills
and maintenance costs by choos-
ing the Halo LED.
Halo LED will continue to deliver
70% of the original light after
eleven years based on 12 hours
usage per day.
Sustainable Lighting for Hospitality
9HALO®
Operational costs can be dramatically reduced with Halo LED lighting. When
lighting is operated 24/7, the burn hoursof traditional light sources increase the
total energy load and frequency oflamp replacement.
Since the Halo LED does not emit heat like tradi-tional incandescent or fluorescent sources, even alarge installation will not put a significant strain onthe air conditioning system. This is another benefitfrom Halo LED.
Halo LED can help improve customersatisfaction. Most recent reports indicate thenumber one complaint of customers stayingin hotels is the lighting does not work. This isdue to the high mortality rates of incandes-cent and compact fluorescent lamps. Evenunder harsh demands of 24/7 operation, theHalo LED module will continue to deliver 70%of the original light after six years. That’s sixyears of no unsightly maintenance operationsdisturbing your customers.

C.I.E. (CommissionInternationale de l’E-clairage, The Interna-tional Commission onColor). The C.I.E. dia-gram is based on theproposition that mixingvarying proportions ofthree hypothetical pri-maries (not necessarilyred, green, and blue) cancreate the sensation inthe human observer ofany color of light. Thethree “primary” colorsare dubbed”X”, “Y” and“Z”. If we are merelyconcerned about colorand not about bright-ness, we can specifyjust the relativestrengths of these threecolors, denoted by x, yand z. Since x+y+z mustadd up to 1 (ie 100%) just providing x and y is sufficient to specify lamp color with z im-plied. Lamp color can then be represented on a two dimensional plot of x and y. All pos-sible colors then fall under a “guitar pick” shaped triangle in which the perimeterencompasses spectrally pure colors (seen in nature only in rainbows and prisms) rang-ing from red to blue. Moving toward the center “dilutes” the color until it ultimately be-comes white. The color coordinates traversed by an incandescent object as itstemperature is raised are plotted on the C.I.E. Chromaticity Diagram as the “Blackbody”curve and occupies the central white region. Two lamps whose x, y coordinates fall oneabove the blackbody and one below could have the same CCT. However the one abovewill appear slightly greener, and the one below slightly pinker. This is why two lampshaving the same color temperature can still show differences in color as seen by thehuman eye. This is why the Halo LED has very stringent color specifications, testing, and production controls to ensure consistent color uniformity. Halo LED complies withENERGY STAR® SSL test standards including IES LM-79-2008 and LM-80-2008 asperformed by an independent test lab.
Proper thermal management of a LED system is criticalfor high efficiency and long life. Halo LED’s patent pend-ing heat sink construction is designed for retrofit or newconstruction to yield 70% lumen maintenance after50,000 hours of operation with many thousands of hoursof operation thereafter. The Halo LED is tested to IESNALM-79 and LM-80 test standards for performance and reliability.
Efficient optical control isachieved through computeroptimized designs toachieve high luminaire effi-ciency. Halo LED’s patentpending optics balancesource brightness and per-formance to deliver a sys-tem that exceeds ENERGY STAR® SSL strin-gent requirements for lumi-naire efficacy and absolutelumen delivery from the luminaire.

Economic Analysis
NOTES:(1) Rated life of an LED system represents only a
30% depreciation in light output without acomplete system failure
(2) Rated life of traditional sources are defined asthe time in which 50 lamps out of 100 fail.
(3) Order a different system to obtain dimmingfeature.
(4) Lamp replacements are based upon predictedmortality curves published by major lampmanufacturers.
(5) Lamp cost of an LED system is zero for 3 yearevaluation. The replacement module is ex-pected to occur when the owner is dissatisfiedwith the light levels well beyond 50,000 hoursof operation.
(6) LED luminaires are measured in total deliveredlumens using absolute photometry. Thismeans there is no differentiation for measuredvalues between the sources and luminaire. Therefore, a LED luminaire is considered 100%efficient in delivering total lumens.
(7) Restricted to housings that do not include amedium base socket (E26)

The chart is a graphic presentation showing what is necessary for countriesto maintain an acceptable standard of living while also living at a globallysustainable level. On a global scale it is critical to know whether humanity is living within thecarrying capacity of the planet – are humans living sustainably on planetEarth? The Ecological footprint measures human consumption in terms ofthe biologically productive land needed to provide the resources, and ab-sorb the wastes of the average global citizen. In 2008 it required 2.7 globalhectares per person, 30% more than the natural biological capacity of 2.1global hectares (assuming no provision for that needed for other organ-isms). The resulting ecological deficit must be met from unsustainablesources - use of stored resources including fossil fuels, and "mining" natu-ral resources including coal, forests and fisheries at greater than their rateof regeneration. The figure (top) indicates the sustainability of a range ofcountries in terms of the Ecological Footprint compared to the UN HumanDevelopment Index (a measure of standard of living). [1]The technology of Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s) offer future generations access to the natural resources we enjoy today to maintain our standard ofliving. SustainabLEDesign™, Cooper Lighting’s initiative demonstrating theimpact of sustainable LED luminaires, teaches lighting consumers bothmonetary and non-monetary effects when selecting LED solutions to solvelighting needs. Energy and maintenance are primary monetary values consumers can tan-gibly measure when selecting lighting products. Intangible metrics are theimpact of disposal and emissions of toxic materials that, when improperlydisposed, can leach into the natural water supply and emit greenhousegases that affect the earth’s climate. The HALO LED offers new solutions to save energy, extend maintenancecycles, and provide controls that dramatically create sustainable lightingdesigns. Join Cooper Lighting’s continued efforts to be environmentallyresponsible while offering consumers a financial return on their investment.[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainability

SustainabLEDdesign™ - HALO LED• 75% less energy than a 65W BR30 incandescent lamp.• Provides 70% of initial lumens at 50,000 hours while over 35 incan-
descent lamps rated at 2,000 hours would have to be replaced in thesame time period.
• RoHS compliant meaning it does not contain mercury, lead or PCB’s• Reduces the following greenhouse gasses generated during
electricity production.- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)- Methane Gas (CH4)- Nitrous Oxide (N20) - Fluorinated gases such as hydrofluo-
rocarbon, Perfluorocarbon and Sulfur Hexafluoride (ozone -depleting substances - i.e. CFCs, HCFCs and halons).
HALO®
Halo LED Heat Sink Module• Aluminum heat sink• LED package consisting of aluminum, InGN
diodes, silicone, gold wire and phosphors• Copper wire with THHN insulation• Nylon and polycarbonate plastics
Driver• Potted electronics assembly
Housing• Considered a permanent part of the
installation and unlikely to be removed• Housings are a mix of steel and aluminum
parts
Trim• Trim ring and reflector are made of
aluminum• Glass lenses are used on some trims
Sustainability considers the impact on the environment during operation. The table below provides a relative indicator on the introduction of haz-ardous materials and greenhouse gases when various lighting systems areused. HALO LED lighting provides the lowest impact for the delivered lumens (around 650 lumens).
(1) Pounds per 50,000 hours per luminaire. (2) CO2 = Carbon dioxide (3) NO = NitrogenOxide (4) SO2 = Sulfur dioxide (5) % by weight (6) From solder connections
Sustainable solutions also evaluate the amount of natural resources consumed duringthe life cycle of the product. Halo LED is considerably better than the 65W BR30recessed downlight that delivers around 650 lumens.
The chart indicates the impact of these products to the overall consumption ofnatural resources. As shown, the Halo LED reduces the consumption of natural resources as compared to a 65W BR30.[Note that public research funding from independent researchers have been madeavailable with the goal to develop measurement systems that determine naturalresource consumption for various products. Prestigious universities are leading thiseffort. We should expect further refinement over time since this is a new field of study.]
