STG is very proud to welcome you to tonight’s powerful performance of HAMILTON!
We can’t imagine a more exciting way to celebrate the Paramount’s 90th Anniversary,
which will officially take place on March 1, 2018.
In addition to the six-week run of this musical, STG is working with the producers and
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to bring the innovative educational
program that debuted at HAMILTON on Broadway here to Seattle. The program
provides more than 5,700 Seattle area Title I high school students the opportunity to
experience the musical HAMILTON after having spent several weeks in their classrooms
studying American history through a special integrated curriculum about Alexander
Hamilton and the nation’s Founding Fathers.
As part of the program, two underwritten student matinees are taking place on March
8 and March 14, 2018. In addition to seeing a performance of HAMILTON, students
will participate in a Q&A with members of the HAMILTON cast. Students representing
various schools in attendance will also perform an original work they created based on
their classroom studies—songs, rap, poetry, scenes, monologues—on The Paramount
Theatre stage in front of their peers.
And what an appropriate program to be highlighting as we celebrate the 90th birthday
of the Paramount Theatre—The People’s Theatre.
STG has several events planned in the coming months to honor the theatre’s legacy.
We hope you make time to explore a new art installation celebrating the Paramount’s
90th in our Re:definition gallery (located in the Paramount lobby bar). Curated by
Juan Alonso-Rodríguez, Tracy Rector and Tariqa Waters, the immersive installation
includes commissioned works by numerous local artists featuring large-scale panels,
ceiling installations, and more—all inspired by the humanity of the theatre’s past,
present, and future.
On April 2, we honor the Paramount’s original role as a silent movie palace with a
screening of the classic 1928 film The Patsy, starring Marion Davies with Donna Parker
and the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Step back with us to the year of the theatre’s opening
with vintage cars, flapper dancers, a ’20s costume contest, and photo booth. This
will be the first of five film screenings in our Silent Movie Mondays – “Leading Ladies”
series, which will feature a silent film every Monday throughout the month of April.
Then, on May 21, the celebration continues with “Show Divine at 9th & Pine,” a free
organ concert by Tedde Gibson featuring popular songs from 1928 and selected sing-
along numbers.
In addition, we would like to extend a special thank you to Starbucks and Wells Fargo
for sponsoring the Paramount’s 90th Birthday Celebration on March 1st! These are only

JEFFREY SELLER (Producer) is the winner of four Tony Awards for Best Musical: Hamilton (2016), Rent (1996), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Avenue Q (2004) and In the Heights (2008). Jeffrey has also produced and/or devel-oped De La Guarda (1998), Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party (2000), Baz Luhrmann’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème (2002), High Fidelity (2006), the 2009 Revival of West Side Story and The Last Ship (2014). Jeffrey is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
SANDER JACOBS (Producer) received the Tony Award for Best Musical for Hamilton (Pulitzer Prize-winner) and In the Heights. Mr. Jacobs has served as a co-producer/investor for numerous Broadway, national and international productions. Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Grand Hotel, Follies, West Side Story, Bengal Tiger and The Last Ship are among his many investments. His career began with a multi-product fashion manufacturing and dis-tributing company, which expanded into ventures in the cosmetics and real estate industries.
JILL FURMAN (Producer) received the Tony Award for Best Musical for Hamilton (2016) and In the Heights (2008). Other Broadway: Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Heiress, Seminar, West Side Story, The Drowsy Chaperone, Sly Fox and Fortune’s Fool. Off-Broadway: On the Line and Adult Entertainment. The Paramount was known as The Seattle Theatre until 1930.
built at 9th Avenue and Pine Street in Seattle. It would be the largest and most opulent theater of its type west of Chicago and would emulate the Paramount Theatre in New York. The artistic achievement – including design, detail, construction, furnishings, equipment and types of performances – was considered the most lavish in all of Western America.
The doors of The Paramount opened to the public on March 1, 1928. During the early 1920s, Seattle was a hub of movie theatres, with more than 45 throughout the city. The Paramount was unique in that it was designed to not only show first-run movies, but to also present live stage shows. After the 1960s, each decade presented new challenges for these types of theatres, with more torn down and fewer remaining from one year to the next.
The Paramount was known as The Seattle Theatre until 1930, and before it could fully establish itself, history would play a cruel trick. The Great Depression brought economic hardship in early 1930, causing most theatres to close completely. During this period, The Paramount miraculously only shut its doors for a few brief stretches, persevering with creative marketing and phenomenal shows.
Charles Clise purchased The Paramount from Rosenbaum in the early 1950s. This was a difficult time for film, when the rise of television
Longevity speaks volumes when it’s associated with the 90th birthday celebration of The Paramount Theatre. The journey this theatre has taken has been a rocky road, but thanks to the vision and persistence of several key players, it has endured to remain the iconic theatre it is today.
It was the wish of L.N. Rosenbaum, the visionary responsible for this ornately decorated theatre, that The Paramount would endure at least 100 years. In 1926, L.N. approached Adolph Zukor, president of a well-known film company in Hollywood, with his vision of a theater on a grand and magnificent scale to be

caused film attendance to drop by about 44 million movie goers. As time marched on, the 1960s proved to be harrowing for The Paramount and the theatre began to lose its shine as one of the most lavish and prodigious movie palaces of the golden age of Hollywood, and most certainly of Seattle.
However, significant milestones breathed new life into the historic theatre in the 1970s. In an effort to jumpstart its presence in the city, The Paramount became one of the first movie theaters to be transformed into a rock palace. This innovative venue style presented the Paramount Northwest management with a new audience. It was also during this decade the historic Paramount Theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
With a refurbishment of the theatre in the 1980s, The Paramount was prepared to shift its focus to more sophisticated performances. Rock shows were no longer permitted and sights were set on Las Vegas-style

entertainment, such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash Broadway musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, accompanied by Modern Dance Company of Manhattan. It was in the late 1980s that the theatre entered into several years of bankruptcy proceedings in an effort to save the once-affluent building.
In December 1992, Eulysees Lewis, president of West Coast Theatres announced that the Paramount Theatre and the attached office tower was being sold to former Microsoft Vice President, Ida Cole. Recently retired, Cole was searching for a new passion and her intentions were to restore the Paramount Theatre to, as she stated, “a kissable” building. It was to be the people’s theater where everyone was welcome and all should feel comfortable.
She stated, “I don’t want this place to be a shrine. I want it to be alive and vibrant so it can be enjoyed and appreciated. This beautiful building and this city deserve no less.”
On June 14, 1994, the renovation process began in earnest, and many updates to the interior were accomplished. 67 years of limited care rendered the carefully crafted intricate designs that The Paramount was once known for nearly unrecognizable. The lobby areas, auditorium walls and ceilings were cleaned and restored. The theatre’s eight huge chandeliers containing over one-half million crystal beads were lowered and removed for restoration, re-wiring and cleaning.
The largest segment of the entire project, aside from the stage extension, was the addition of a convertible platform floor system
capable of accommodating up to 1,000 people. It could be used for dining, dancing, a giant flat floor for rock shows, and all types of special events including weddings and community events. This flooring system was the only one of its kind in the nation for a theater of this size.
On Friday, March 17, 1995, the Paramount Theatre hosted an opening gala celebration to commemorate the latest milestone in the theatre’s history. Miss Saigon was the first presentation, celebrating the return of Broadway to the theatre.
In 2002, Ida Cole transferred ownership of The Paramount to Seattle Theatre Group, the current stewards of this historic theatre. It is a role that STG has been proud to sustain for nearly 16 years and counting, and a duty that has become ingrained in both the organization’s mission and core values.
So as we celebrate the 90th birthday of the Paramount Theatre, we honor its ability to persevere. L.N. Rosenbaum dreamed of building it, and he did. Ida Cole dreamed of restoring it, and she did. The Seattle Theatre Group was chosen to steward it, and they continue to do so. We celebrate, and draw from, all of these past experiences as we look to the next 90 years!

As The Paramount reaches this significant milestone of 90 years, it’s important we look back and acknowledge those who have been involved with the theatre’s journey and the amazing impact this building has had on all who have worked, performed and/or witnessed performances within its walls.
It’s safe to say that without the vision of Ida Cole, the Paramount would not be here today. It was Cole who purchased the Paramount in 1993, rescuing the theatre from its then-current state of bankruptcy while carving out a plan for its restoration and development as a magnificent theatre where everyone is welcome.
“This is a very beautiful place and when it was built, it was built with the express mission that it was to make ordinary people feel like royalty,” says Cole, Founding Director of Seattle Theatre Group. “It was a quarter I think, when they first started, and you could go in and be in a palace. You could be king and queen for an hour. We really thought that it was wonderful…to give yourself that level of a stretch for your fantasies.”
“The Paramount’s for everybody,” she continues, “It is...we call it The People’s Theater because there should be something there every year for just about everybody in the whole community.”
ArtsFund President & CEO Mari Horita agrees, “The Paramount is, physically, unique. They don’t design theaters like that anymore. It has that opulence and those really special characteristics and details. It’s also a very welcoming theater.”
It’s not only the unique appearance of the theatre that has drawn artists and audiences over the years, but also the theatre’s capacity, which allows for performances of all types and sizes to take place on its stage. our cultural facility universe. But I think that the Paramount’s size and its capacity are unique. And I think its history is unique. We wouldn’t be able to see Hamilton in Seattle if we didn’t have the Paramount. There’s a lot of these national, international shows that it can attract, but I think what the STG team has done is also anchor national and international art in a real awareness of our local community.”
This connection to the community is at the forefront of STG’s mission of maintaining the Paramount as a gathering place to experience enriching and educational performances.
“It is our home,” says Tom Mara, Executive Director of KEXP. “It’s our place where we can come together with fellow travelers who are interested in that artist or interested in that play…It’s a place of gathering. We need places. We need
homes. And The Paramount plays that incubator role.”
Virginia Johnson, Artistic Director of Dance Theatre of Harlem, has experienced countless performing arts venues throughout her career. She agrees that the Paramount has a very unique, informed connection to the city of Seattle and to those who perform on its stage.
“Not every city has a Paramount, but look at what a resource the Paramount is,” says Johnson. “It’s an institution in Seattle. It’s got a history—a long relationship with the arts community, with the civic community, and with an arts consuming public. It has a certain knowledge about what Seattle knows and also has an influence on what the city learns and how it evolves. At Dance Theater of Harlem, places like the Paramount are the pillars of our philosophy. We use a venue like The Paramount to help us understand what’s the best way to approach a

city. There are very few places like the Paramount…They know how to do it, because they’re doing it all the time – every day for 90 years.”
“There is something different about the Paramount,” says dancer Aaron Alexander, former DANCE This participant and current cast member in the Chicago production of Hamilton. “You know that there’s a reputation to live up to and there’s an expectation of a caliber of performance that is expected in that venue regardless of what you’re doing there. I felt that my performance was elevated when I was in that space because I wanted to honor the space and what it meant.”
It’s true that for 90 years the Paramount Theatre and its performances have impacted artists, audiences, and the surrounding community on the grandest scale. It is STG’s goal to enrich, inspire, challenge, and expand our world through the arts, and our ongoing role as steward of this historic theatre is one of the central ways in which we plan to do so.
“The beauty of The Paramount was meant to enhance your experience to whatever you were seeing there,” says Cole. “You were supposed to feel different when you go through the door and look around, and feel very special. In that way, the building itself is important, but mostly it’s important because it brings the community together in ways that are important to them. There are few other things that do that. It has wide appeal and it does bring a whole community of people together.”

STG Executive Director Josh LaBelle has been involved with the Paramount Theatre in many different ways over the years. His relationship with the building encompasses being a devoted patron, performing on its stage as a musician, and his current role as STG Executive Director, a post he has held for 17 years. Over the years, LaBelle’s reverence for the theatre, its history, and its performances has continued to grow.
“There’s something special about historic theaters in general, and something very specific about The Paramount,” LaBelle notes. “Historically, this is the stage in Seattle that has been home for artists such as Nirvana, Prince, Bolshoi Ballet (with Nina Ananiashvili as Juliet), Mark Morris Dance Group, Bob Dylan, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Roots—and yes, in our 90th year—Hamilton! The contrast is staggeringly beautiful. I think all of us at STG see our work in terms of being a service organization—serving these artists and the community at large.”
Drawing from these diverse experiences, it is with an open mind that LaBelle looks to the future, focusing not only on how to protect the Paramount’s existing legacy, but on how to nurture its growth and evolution in the years to come.
“At STG, through The Paramount, and all our venues we are interested in cultural adaptation— how performing arts culture winds up changing and morphing over time.
A Legacy ContinuesAnd it’s one of the most beautiful things to be part of as we steward this theater into another 90 years. It is not just observing it, but actually really feeding that adaptation. We are interested in looking at the Paramount’s role in the next 90 years in the context of historic and cultural adaptation. How do we need to adapt the spaces in, and around, and adjacent to the Paramount to better serve artists and patrons?
And we are really committed to artists. We have to be very involved in artist development at an early time in an artist’s path. Whether that’s in our community programs, working with local youth artists that are showing an interest…say in songwriting—STG and these historic theatres must be places for them to learn. We have to make sure we have systems in place where we can serve an artist that is just starting to play live, and sell tickets. We need to help an artist develop, find an audience, and ultimately play a role in stewarding artist development in this region.”
It is the support of the ongoing progress of the arts and dedication to the nurturing of artists that LaBelle and STG plan to lead with when moving into The Paramount’s next chapter, and it is the continuing need for the arts that will allow The Paramount to continue to build upon its astounding legacy.
“We believe the very nature of humanity is that we all need art,” says LaBelle. “And it is because of this that people will always be drawn to live performance. STG’s focus on keeping Arts Vital is of Paramount importance as we roll into the next 90 years.”

Seattle Theatre Group’s Education and Community Programs (ECP) invest in meaningful experiences for our community and future generations of performing artists. Each season, STG offers over 200 education programs impacting over 55,000 students and community members from diverse ages and backgrounds. These programs deepen significance to performances through opportunities to engage with artists, inspire youth and local artists through training and performance opportunities, and provide exposure to the arts through access initiatives.
Over the years, we’ve seen numerous ECP participants build upon the skills they’ve learned in our sessions to create successful and fulfilling careers. Below is a snapshot of past ECP participants who have done just that!
Multi-Grammy Award winning hip-hop artist Macklemore participated in STG’s first ever More Music @ The Moore program in 2002.
Dancer Aaron Alexander participated in STG’s DANCE This program. He has choreographed and performed hip-hop in Los Angeles and Seattle, and in 2016, was cast in the Chicago production of Hamilton.
Former DANCE This participant Aaron Loux attended Juilliard before dancing with The Metropolitan Opera and
Arc Dance Company. He has danced with Mark Morris Dance Group since 2010.
Pamela Yasutake, from Northwest Tap Connection, is also a DANCE This alum who performed with Savion Glover on the Paramount stage before making her Broadway debut in the 10-time Tony nominated musical Shuffle Along.
Seattle-based hip-hop artist and producer Otieno Terry is a former participant of STG’s More Music @ The Moore program. He was recently featured on Macklemore’s new album Gemini, opened for Macklemore at his Seattle concert last year, and has played Sasquatch! and Bumbershoot.
Acclaimed opera singer J’nai Bridges is a former More Music @ The Moore participant who has performed with the San Francisco Opera, Opera Zürich, Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others.

Since taking over ownership of the historic Paramount Theatre in 2002, STG has welcomed the role of steward of the theatre and made it its mission to keep the theatre healthy and vibrant. This would not be possible without a thoughtful and supportive Board of Directors. STG prides itself on having a Board of Directors filled with members who are passionate about The Paramount, their community, and the drive to enrich, inspire, challenge and expand our world through the arts.
Board President Ricardo Frazer has been a member of the board since 2006 and has held the office of President since September 2016.
“There’s a depth to experiencing art at The Paramount that you don’t feel at other places,” says Frazer. “You can feel an underlying energy at the Paramount. I think it’s
the ultimate experience actually. When you look around the Paramount it is history. It is that connection from the past to the present. With a theater like the Paramount it’s a continuous flow of creativity, of culture, of social justice.”
It’s this uniqueness and distinctive quality of The Paramount, as well as the devotion of the organization behind it, that drives STG’s board to ensure the organization is not only fulfilling its role of steward, but also staying true to other core values such as arts leadership, building community alliances, and maintaining a passion for diversity in arts, artists, and audiences.
“STG helps us understand how the arts fit into our daily lives,” continues Frazer. “For me, I think—and for most of the board members and the people involved with the Paramount and the STG organization—it is an understanding that the arts act like the soul of the city. You can have technology and other new, fancy and innovative things. But without arts and culture, and without the Paramount or other venues like the Neptune and the Moore and the Fifth Avenue, what do we have? We are a bit soulless.”

That’s why STG is proud to offer free Historic Theatres Tours, led by members of our well-versed volunteer staff.

Tours of the Paramount Theatre take place on the first Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of 9th and Pine. Tours of the Moore Theatre are the second Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main
entrance, on the corner of 2nd and Virginia. Neptune Tours are the third Saturday of everymonth and guests should meet infront of the main entrance.
Additionally, Seattle Theatre Group is able to schedule tours upon request for student groups ages 7 and up. This is an excellent way for students to experience the technical aspects of the stage, take a behind-the-scenes look at backstage operations, and get an introduction to the history of the building.
It is also STG’s responsibility and privilege to protect the rich history of the Paramount, Moore and Neptune Theatres and the countless, diverse performances that have taken place on their stages. Because of this, STG created the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library. Located on the fourth floor of the Paramount Theatre Office Tower adjacent to the theatre, the STG Historic Theaters Library is free and open to the public

every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm, as well as during all public and student tours of the Paramount.
The Library first opened its doors to the public on March 1, 2012, though the project began early in December 2010. It required the gathering, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and preserving of over 100 years of historical data. With tens of thousands of volunteer hours to date, this continues to be an on-going project.
The objective of STG’s Historic Theatres Library is three-fold:• To ensure historical material
that exists of the three theatres is properly preserved and documented for future generations.
• To provide an educational environment for youth that would offer an opportunity to learn and experience the remarkable history of the three theatres.
• To offer the community a setting in which to become better acquainted with the history and thereby develop a deeper understanding of three of the few remaining historic theatres in Seattle.
Managed by the Thrasher family, and aided by several dedicated volunteers, the library’s collection includes: materials about the performers that graced the stages over the many decades, documents depicting the peaks and valleys that these theatres had to endure, information on the visionaries responsible for these theatres, priceless memorabilia, and countless signed posters, among other historical resources.
