The “Part- ner-in-Preservation” award is given to an individual or organization for partnering with the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society (BSPS) to preserve and protect the native flora and fauna of New York State. The corporate award was received by Peggy Swap- ceinski, executive director of the Gillam-Grant Com- munity Center (GGCC), Bergen. The GGCC was recog- nized for their support of the Bergen Swamp property in Byron and Bergen. The GGCC provided the meeting place to begin and end the Bergen Swamp spring pil- grimage tour of orchids. For over 20 years the GGCC served as custodian of BSPS document archives. Re- cently, the GGCC hosted a community “meet and greet” produced by the Seneca Park Zoo and the BSPS. A live Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake and a live spotted turtle were displayed to a crowd of over a hundred. These two indigenous reptile species are listed as endangered by New York State and can still be found in the Bergen Swamp. The Gillam-Grant Community Center was nominated for this award by Society trustee John Adamski of Brigh- ton. The individual award was received by Joseph Whit- comb, a long serving trustee. Whitcomb, who resides in Newark, was awarded for his long service on behalf of the Zurich Bog property in Arcadia, NY and to the Society. Whitcomb served the BSPS for over 40 years as a Society trustee, president, Zurich Bog Property chairperson and as a personal inspiration to the current trustees. Whitcomb laid the first Black Locust boardwalk trail into Zurich Bog. This trail enabled visitor access to the orchids and carnivorous plants found in this National Natural Landmark. Whitcomb oversaw the acquisition of four additional parcels of land to the BSPS Zurich Bog property. The most recent was an 18 acre parcel of land that he personally purchased and gifted to the BSPS for preservation and protection of the native wetland plants. Joseph Whitcomb was nominated for this award by So- ciety trustee Lee Drake Sr. of Bloomfield. The Bergen Swamp Preservation Society is the first and oldest private ecological preservation land trust in the United States. The Society was chartered in 1936 by the New York State Department of Education as a “Liv- ing Museum.” Since its charter, the Society has operated by volunteers with a membership of 400 persons and corporations. Starting January 1, 2015, the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act will require that consumers dispose of electronic equipment by either returning it to either the manufacturer or a designated New York State Waste Collection Site. “There is now a new way that consumers are required to dispose of their electronic equipment. I want to make sure that residents are aware of this change to the law so they are in compliance,” said Hawley. “The new way electronics must be disposed of is simple and easy to understand and costs the consumer nothing. If you have any ques- tions, feel free to contact my office and we will be happy to help.” Under this law, there are two ways to dispose of electronics. The first way is the use the newly- required product manufacturer’s take-back program. New Horizons Bandsperform Holiday Concert
The Eastman Community Music School’s New Horizons Band will present a free holiday concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Decem-ber 14 at the U of R Advancement Center (formerly St. Agnes HS). The 75-minute program will feature traditional and popu-lar music of the holiday season.
The bands are part of the New Horizons adult music education program sponsored by the Eastman Community Music School.The first New Horizons program was formed in 1991 at Eastman under the guid-ance of Roy Ernst, now professor emeritus. Members include those with little or no musical experience, those who have post-poned participating in an ensemble due to career and family, and seasoned musi-cians. The program has grown interna-tionally to more than 225 chapters in the United States, Canada, Ireland, South Af-rica, France, Italy, Australia, Netherlands, England, New Zealand, and Iceland.
Originally designed for seniors, New Horizons now accepts adults of all ages and any level of experience. More than 250 people are involved in the local pro-gram, which includes three levels of band, two jazz bands, string and full orchestras, small ensembles, and a chorus. The en-sembles perform annually at the Xerox In-ternational Jazz Festival in June as well as in Kilbourn Hall and Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre. The Clarinet Choir has been selected to perform at the Interna-tional ClarinetFest in both Austin, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During the year, the band presents community out-reach concerts in area schools, senior liv-ing centers, and community festivals.

•Senior Austin Gerber (Churchville-Chili) of Keu-ka College was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Soccer Player of the Year. The four-time member of the All-NEAC squads cur-rently leads the country among Division III student-athletes in goals scored and points and is also tops in both goals per game (1.62) and points per game (3.62). Junior Joe Maier (Spencerport) earned sec-ond-team All-NEAC, while junior Ben Schreiber (Hilton) earned third-team All-NEAC.•After winning the NCAA Division II East Region championship last Sat-urday, Roberts Wesleyan cross country runner Ra-
chel Prutsman and head coaches Andrew Dorr and Jennifer Dorr picked up USTFCCCA individual honors. Prutsman was named the East Region Women’s Athlete of the Year after being the first runner to cross the finish line at the regional race and won the NCCAA Na-tional Championship meet two weeks ago. The Dorr’s were named Coaches of the Year after guiding the team to their first East Coast Conference championship and second consecutive NCCAA title. •Roberts Wesleyan sopho-more Bella Mitrevski (Churchville-Chili) was named to the 2014 Daktron-ics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association East Region First Team Women’s Soccer Team. The midfielder was also named to the ECC All-Conference First Team after finishing the regular season ranked second in points and goals. Over her two-year career, Mitrevski has totaled 61 points (23 goals, 15 as-sists) for the Redhawks. Junior Heaven Palamitia was named to the Second Team after finishing the campaign with 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists).•College at Brockport se-nior Rachel Malone took 18th place overall to im-prove two places from her 2013 finish to earn her third women’s cross coun-try All-American award at the NCAA Division III Championships in Mason, OH. Malone was the first Brockport female Cross Country All-American in 2012 as a sophomore with her 34th place finish and repeated as All-American last year with a 20th place finish as a junior. She and junior Gary Messina were named NCAA Division III All-Region Honorees by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches As-sociation (USTFCCCA).
•Keuka College sopho-more Abbey David (Ken-dall) and freshman Nicole Browe (Kendall) each earned second-team All-NEAC honors in women’s soccer. David, a midfield-er/defender, started all 16 games and scored 21 points on seven goals with seven assists. She leads Keuka in assists and is third in both goals and points. Browe, a forward, has started all 16 games and leads the squad in goals (12) and points (25). She had three game-winning goals and scored at least one goal in five straight games from Aug. 31 to Sept. 14.•Hilton grad and SUNY Cortland senior goalkeeper Tim Beauvais was named First Team All-SUNYAC in men’s soccer. It is the third time he has been honored and is Cortland’s career leader with 23 shutouts. Spencerport grad Col-lin Goettel was a Third Team pick for the Col-lege at Brockport as was Mark Sylvia while Pe-ter DiLorenzo was also named to the First Team.•Senior middle blocker Jordan Wilson has been named to the East Coast Conference All-Conference First Team for Roberts Wesleyan after leading the ECC with an impressive .376 hitting percentage this season. Fellow senior and middle blocker Kend-all Havener was named to the All-Conference Second Team after finishing third on the team with 276 kills and 74 blocks (18 solo, 56 assists). She led Roberts Wesleyan with 38 service aces this season while play-ing in all 100 sets.•College at Brockport field hockey freshman Margo Tremaine was named First team All-SUNYAC and senior Abby Eschen Second Team.•Spencerport grad Aus-tin Coleman was named a Second Team Empire 8

Running back Dan Andrews was a First Team selection at run-ning back after he led the conference in rushing with an average of 111.0 yards per game as he cleared the 1,000-yard rushing mile-stone for the second consec-utive season. Hilton grad Colby Morabito was also a First Team selection at linebacker as was defensive lineman Tarik Bennett. Morabito led Brockport with four interceptions and was the conference leader in passes defensed with 13 break-ups and four inter-ceptions while Bennett was third in the conference with 7.5 sacks and was tied for fifth in the conference with 11.5 tackles for loss. Jake Brickler (Hilton) was a Second Team choice at line-backer while senior wide receiver Andrew Morzek and freshman offensive lineman Mark Sanchez were named Honorable Mention on offense.

Hilton CSD Athletic Hall of Fame to induct five new members Dec. 29
Hilton Central School District Athletic Hall of Fame will induct five new members on Monday, December 29 at Hilton High School, 400 East Ave. This year’s honored Hilton CSD athletes and coach are: Matthew Blodgett, 1995 (cross country, indoor and outdoor track); Rachel Clonick, 2006 (basketball, softball), Matthew Cushman, 2001 (volleyball, indoor and outdoor track); Jonathan Schwind, 2008 (soccer, hockey, baseball) and John Feeney, gymnastics coach.
The 2014 Induction Ceremony will be held during the Hilton Hall of Fame Boys Basketball Tournament. All members of the Hilton Athletic Hall of Fame and com-munity members are invited to attend this free event. The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the presentation of inductees at 5 p.m. in the auditorium. The inductees will also be recognized in the gym at the beginning of Hilton varsity game vs. Greece Olympia at approximate-ly 6:45 p.m.
The Hilton Central School District Athletic Hall of Fame annually recog-nizes those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton athletic program and in some cases, at a higher level, through their participation as athletes, coaches or administrators.
Candidates must be a graduate of Hilton High School for a minimum of five years or a retired coach from the Hilton Central School District. Candidates are those who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton sports program or established themselves in the field of athletics at the local, state, national or international level (professional, Olympic, college athlete, coach, etc.); students who, while in high school, received athletic honors such as All-American, All-State, All-Greater Roch-ester, State/Sectional Championship, Ath-lete of the Year or All-County (overall team success and multiple-sport participation may also be considered). Any student who participated in Hilton athletics may be considered under special circumstances.

The bride, daughter of Dwight and Nada Rogers of Churchville, is a professional musician who has continued her music career in Rochester.
The groom is also a professional musician who continued his career in New York City.
The couple now reside in Saranac Lake where they hope to continue their music careers in the Adirondacks.

ALBION•Rogers, Roland H., age 79, died December 2, 2014 in the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence. Mr. Rogers was a member and Trustee of the Eagle Harbor United Methodist Church, a member of the BPO Elks Lodge #1006 in Albion. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine, two brothers and three sisters: Morris Rogers, Augustas Rogers, Twila Ross, Nina Sinatra, and Doris Fitzgerald. He is survived by his son: Scott (Anne) Rogers of Michigan, his daughter: Pauline (Randall) Jurs of Albion; brothers: Jack Rogers of Texas, Gordon Rogers of Tennessee; his grandchildren: Justin, Ashley, Hallie, Lindsie; one great granddaughter: Ava; several nieces and nephews.

BROCKPORT•George, Vincent L., Died November 24, 2014 at age 94, with his loving niece Josephine by his side. Mr. George was predeceased by his parents Herbert L. George and Esther G. George of Sundown, NY, sisters Ruth Cicchinelli, Evelyn Kane, and brother, Herbert L. George Jr. Survived by sisters Linda Greenwald, Colbeskill, and Alberta George, Eastham, Massachusetts; nieces, Josephine (Joseph A.) Matela, Brockport, Rosemary (Andrew) Jurman of Rochester, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He enlisted in the Marines in 1944 and was sent to Japan. After being Honorably Discharged in 1951, Mr. George worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, and was retired after forty years with the company.
There will be no calling hours and burial will be in the spring in his beloved Catskills at the convenience of the family.

Predeceased by his first wife Mary and second wife Jewel, children Alice and Sean, brother Jack, sister Vera (Bob) and daughter-in-law Jo Ann. He is survived by his son David; daughter June (David) Sechowski; daughter-in-law Diane Purdy; grandchildren Michael Purdy, Colleen (Justin) Topalian, Sarah (Geoffrey) Mills, Alice Purdy, Rachael (TJ) Moore, Patrick Sechowski; great-grandchildren Carter, Owen, Evan and Nolan; siblings Tom Cirigliano, Rocky (Sue) Cirigliano, Judy (Jerry) McAvey; sister-in-law Christina Purdy; several nieces and nephews including Duane, Kevin and James Smith, and his beloved pet Sunny Boy.
Services were held December 5 at the Fowler Funeral Home Inc., Brockport. Interment will be held in White Haven Memorial Park in the spring.

He is survived by his wife, Heather; his children, Anthony, Dallas and Heath; step children, Naomi and Joshua; his parents, Anthony and Teresa; his brother, Adam (Teresa) Figlow; sister, Jodi (Steven) Coburn; Uncle Nick (Kathy) Lafarnara; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His Funeral Service was held December 6 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral and Cremation Chapel, Batavia. Interment private. Donations can be made to his children, c/o Key Bank, 184 South Union Street, Spencerport, NY 14559 in his memory.
•Sullivan, Marlene Heydorn, age 81, of Rocheser, formerly of Spencerport, died peacefully December 1, 2014 at Saint John’s Home, Rochester following a prolonged illness. Marlene was born in Gary, Indiana to the late Francis and Esther (Yakopec) Heydorn. She attended Purdue University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, and met her husband, the late Arnold “Arnie” Sullivan of Albion. After marrying, Marlene relocated to Spencerport where she resided for almost 42 years. Marlene is survived by two children, Scott (Cindy) Sullivan of Waterport, and Lee Sullivan of Lyndonville; and one granddaughter, Amanda Sullivan of Durham, North Carolina.
As per Marlene’s wishes, there will be no services. Burial will be at Mount Albion Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Contributions can be made to St. John’s Home, 150 Highland Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620 in her memory. An online guestbook is available at merrillgrinnell.com

Dan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosemarie; children, Scott Wright and Sabrina (Jack) Jankowski; granddaughter, Arianna Jankowski and brother, John T. Wright. Dan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a retired Lt. with the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department and a Federal Marshall. Dan lived life to the fullest.

Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band presents Community Christmas Concert
The Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band, con-ducted by Dr. Charles P. Schmidt, will perform a Community Christmas Concert Friday, December 12 at Hilton Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. Donations of canned goods for the community food shelf will be accepted at the door. The concert features Christmas music, including works by Le-roy Anderson, Caesar Giovannini, Gustav Holst, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George Kenny, and Robert Lowden. The program
will also feature trombone soloist Mary Reazor, who will perform “Allegro Fran-caise” by Barat.

Historic buildings need repurposed uses to surviveStone Store, Clarendon and Bethany Town Hall significant area structures

Landmark Society of Western New York is working with the Town of Bethany in Genesee County to market the old Bethany Town Hall, built in 1832, to find a buyer who is interested in the historic structure and has the right resources to ensure it is properly restored.
“The heart of the Landmark Society’s preservation ef-forts is community revitalization,” says Caitlin Meives, Landmark Society Preservation Planner.
“Helping ensure that buildings like the Bethany Town Hall and others across western New York are developed in a way that preserves their historic architecture and en-courages revitalization is core to our mission.”
The Landmark Society’s involvement with the Town of Bethany and the old Bethany Town Hall is somewhat sim-ilar to the Clarendon Stone Store, Meives tells the Sub-urban News/The Herald. “Similar in that we are help-ing a local municipality who wants to do the right thing and save a historic building that is an important part of their community’s identity and heritage and that could be of economic benefit to the community,” Meives explains. “Most small municipalities like Clarendon and Bethany do not have the time or resources to take this on them-selves. As a preservation organization, we can tap into a national network of developers and old building enthusi-asts that your average realtor cannot. This is obviously a unique property that is going to attract a unique buyer.”
The old Bethany Town Hall - constructed in Greek Revival style - was originally constructed as a Method-ist church. It became a private school for young men in 1844 and a town hall in 1890. Beginning in the 1960s, the building was a Grange Hall before it became the town hall again in 1985. The town moved its headquarters sev-eral years ago and asked the Landmark Society for help in ensuring a new owner will respect the history of the building.
“It has such great character and details that we feel it could be appealing enough to draw a buyer from outside the state,” Meives says.
The old Bethany town hall is located 15 minutes east of Batavia and 15 minutes southwest of LeRoy and fea-tures historic details and charm including hardwood floors, original wood doors, wainscoting and light fixtures throughout. Approximately 5,000 square feet on two floors includes expansive open space perfect for a loft-style resi-dence or artist studio, Landmark Society officials say.
Meives says the property in Bethany does differ from the Stone Store in Clarendon as it is not being sold for one dollar.
“The Stone Store was condemned by the town (of Clar-endon) and needed to be gutted and have all new electric and HVAC installed,” she explains. “The Bethany town hall is in comparatively good cosmetic condition. It has loads of architectural features on the interior that are vir-tually unaltered. So we are marketing it at the asking price of $39,900. It really could be an economic asset. If and when a private owner takes it over, it will go on the tax rolls.”
Meives adds that listing it on national historic property websites has resulted in some interest and that a poten-tial buyer would have to present to the Landmark Soci-ety and the Town of Bethany on their intended use of the property. “We would want to see that the buyer had the finances to purchase and do any needed rehab/repair,” Meives says.
Work on the Stone Store in Clarendon is nearing com-pletion, owners Joe and Sue Fertitta say. An antique shop will be housed on the main floor and will open for busi-ness after the first of the new year, Sue Fertitta says. The apartment on the second floor is already rented. Fertitta explains some work still needs to be completed on the ex-terior and that the new tenants are ecstatic.
Clarendon resident Erin Anheier, who spear-headed the “Save the Stone Store” effort, says she is grateful to the Fertittas. “I think the Stone Store counts as a success story for a grassroots effort to save a historic building,” Anheier says.

Holley Elementary student councilhelps community library “Raise the Roof”
During an afterschool meeting, the Holley Elementary School Student Council created coin collection contain-ers to assist the Community Free Library in Holley raise funds to replace their roof. Larry Dabney, a retired Holley teacher who also serves on the library board, assisted the students in creating the containers. His grandson, Thom-as Dobri, is also on the Student Council. Dabney expects that the fundraising will take quite a while. The students walked into the village and asked local businesses for permission to leave a collection container for public dona-tions. The containers have been placed in the following locations: Community Free Library, Village of Holley of-fices, Dr. Schiavone’s practice, First Niagara bank, Sam’s Diner, Heath & Martin, Nationwide office, Dr. Thompson’s office, Kurtz’s Car Care, Wiley’s Ark Animal Care, Save-A-Lot food stores, Holley Pharmacy, and the Holley Post Office. Donations can be made at the library and collec-tion containers can also be found at Holley Elementary School.
