November 4 , 1876 marked thecommencement o the passenger trainservice between Oamaru and Moeraki

Junction.Hampden had a station, though it wasnot in the location many o the peoplehad wished. he 1905 Cyclopedia o NZ describes (t)he Hampden Railway Station, which is a wooden building o theusual design, contains a stationmastersroom, a ticket o ice, and a post and

telegraph o ce. Tere is a ladies waitingroom, a public lobby, and a large asphaltplat orm, with a substantial stone kerbing. On the station property a large goods-shed is in use, and there is a yard orloading live stock. Sadly there is nothinglef to remind us now that there once wasa train station in our village. Tere is no

passenger train either. We hope this vitalservice will resume soon, and when itdoes, that the new station is located in amore convenient place.

o commemorate the opening o theline some years back, here we reproducean article rom the imaru Herald on the

event ul opening day in which Hampdenplayed a signi cant part.

Te opening o the south line romOamaru to the Moeraki junction took place on Saturday last. Te Governmentran ree trains on the occasion and a largenumber o people made an excursion toMoeraki, where a monster picnic washeld. Te trip to Moeraki and the picnicthere were very enjoyable, but the return

journey as will be seen by the ollowingextract rom the North Otago imes wasar rom pleasant.

Te rst up train, consisting o theBothwell and alisman engines, ninecarriages, and a break-van, lef Moeraki junction at 3.15pm - the carriage densely packed; there being upwards o 700

persons in the train. Be ore the irststation (Hampden) was reached it wasound that something had gone wrong

with the Brogden engine (the alisman),one o the valves not working properly and at Hampden she was shunted inrear o the train, which proceeded on its

Hampden's 130 anniversary celebrationcoincided with the 350 international day

o climate change action. It was a timely coincidence. As we paid our respects tothe Hampden o the past, it has becomeclear that it was a sel -reliant little villagewith a robust local economy and a healthy demographic pro le, much more so thanthe Hampden o today.

    Tose characteristics are also similar

to the goals o communities eatured inIn ransition, a movie currently doing therounds and well worth seeing. Te lmasserts that the antidote to weakened, depleted communities is living morelocally, reducing ossil uel use and thusalso climate change.

Tis idea is especially timely because

each new scienti ic report on climatechange indicates that the situation isworse than previously thought. Onesenses genuine alarm amongst increasingnumbers o mainstream climate scientists. For example, the Chairman o theIntergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC), Dr Rajendra Pachauri,

has recently acknowledged that thingsare going to get substantially worse thanthe Panel had anticipated. He is nowcalling or atmospheric carbon dioxideto be reduced to 350ppm instead o theo cial international target o 450ppm.Dr Jim Hansen, senior climate scientistwith NASA, also calls or reducing the

CO2 level to 350ppm so that the li eorms currently adapted to li e on earth

can survive. Dr Hans Schellnhuber, chair o the Advisory Council to the

German government, says to stay withinthe threshold two degrees o warmingthe world as a whole must be totally

carbon- ree by 2050 with high emissionscountries like New Zealand obliged tomake steeper cuts. Tat is a massive call.

I we understand clearly that we havea very narrow window o opportunity in which to make massive change toour carbon-spewing, consumer-drivenwestern li estyles, I expect the 130 year

celebrations will have been a wonder ulopportunity to imagine again a thrivinglittle community sharing goods and skills, and living satis ying lives with minimalemissions.

I you ask around, it is interesting whata lot o little things people are quietly doing in their own way to move in this

direction. Some are getting a ew more vegetables in the garden this spring anda lot o new local apple trees came out o the grafing day run by Wayne Hollows.Others like Bent Jansen have installedinsulation and the Ly ords and Selwoods,

ash solar hot water. It is timely that theHamraki Rag publishes in this issue an

updated bus time table. As or us, wetalk a lot about rainwater tanks and acomposting loo the latter to eventually close the loop and provide nutrients orthe garden. Furthermore, it seems to usthere is more sharing and supporting.

Its hard to know what a use ulresponse to climate change looks like, but

perhaps e orts like these might just bemore potentially valuable than whateverwe can expect rom politicians posturingin Copenhagen.

Plants, like people, bene t rom goodood.

Plant ood comes in a number o diferent orms, and each has a diferentuse and application.

    G e n e r a l e r t i l i s e r, s u c h a sNitrophoska, is incorporated into thesoil be ore planting, or as a side dressing a ter planting. his is a granulatedbalanced ertiliser. It needs moisture todissolve it and to release the nutrients.

ime release ertiliser, such asOsmocote, is a granular eed that canbe added to pots and planters two orthree times a year, again remembering that moisture is required to release thenutrient.

With both Ni t rophoska andOsmocote, the packet will say threemonths, six months, nine months etc,and i su icient moisture has beenpresent then all the nutrient will bedepleted a ter the time stated and a

urther application may be applied. I ,however, moisture has been limited, the inside o the granules will not havedissolved and the plants will not havereceived the ood.

Foliage eed, such as Trive, Lush,Maxicrop and Phostrogen, is liquid

eed mixed with water in a spray orpump bottle and misted over the leaveso plants at regular intervals during the growing season. Read the labels

care ully and apply in the cool o theday, so as not to burn the leaves.

On the next pages you will nd a bustimetable or Hampden that you canunstaple and put on the wall.

We have to stress that this is a generalguide only. Although we did our best tobe as accurate as possible, we take noresponsibility or the in ormation and werecommend that you con rm all detailswith the operators when you book.

We acknowledge that this is anupdated version o the timetable originally compiled some years back by the Rag inconjunction with Hampden Community Energy. We must also thank the BlueSkinNews rom which we unashamedly borrowed the timetable ormat (especially Peter Dowden who maintains the bustimetable or the BSN).

We plan to update the timetable atleast once a year. Please let us know i you notice any mistakes. We would loveto hear your stories o travelling by busas well.

At rst sight, the cost o travellingby bus or coach seems prohibitive. Forinstance the advertised are to Oamaruis $18 - $20 one way. I two people aretravelling it costs nearly $80. However, there are some ways to get around this.I you purchase travelling hours in bulk, the ares come down to $5 one way toOamaru and $10 to Dunedin.

Intercity o ers a exi pass which is valid or 12 months. Perhaps you go toOamaru once every two weeks - about25 trips in 12 months - and each triptakes roughly an hour o travelling toand rom Hampden. You need a 25 hour

exi pass which costs $275. Each return

trip then costs about $11. Te hourly charge decreases as you travel more. For example, a 60 hour exi pass costs$605 making the cost o a return trip toOamaru about $10.

Atomic o ers a similar prepurchasebulk are called U-choose pass. Te passgives you ten hours o travel, and like itsIntercity counterpart, lasts or 12 months. With each hour costing $9, a return tripto Oamaru would be about $9.

Short trips between Hillgrove andHampden can be managed as well. Youget charged or ve minutes o travel.

I you need to make a lot o trips toDunedin, maybe Nakedbuss unlimitedpass (valid or 12 months, costing $597)would suit you. his pass allows youunlimited travel on Nakedbus (operatedhere by Southern Link). I you makeregular trips to Dunedin, say 30 a year, each return trip would cost $20. Te moreyou travel, the less each trip costs. I youmake 60 trips, it would be $10 return.

Te added bonus o the passes issuedby the big operators is that their useis not limited to local trips. Your passcan be used on any other routes they operate. For example, i you have to goto Christchurch or Invercargill, you canuse the pass on those trips too.

Te northbound Knightrider bus couldbe extremely use ul i you are catchingthe ranzalpine (leaving at 8.15am orGreymouth) or the ranzcoastal (leavingat 7am to Picton, then to Wellington) or anearly morning ight. It leaves Hampdenat 10.30pm and arrives in Christchurch

borne with the utmost patience and goodhumour, but on this occasion there wasa little timidity on the part o some ewo the passengers, one lady ainting. Herethe irst our carriages were detached

rom the rest, and the engine ran withthem to the Herbert station, thencereturning and bringing up the remainder.By this time, it was ound that both waterand uel had given out, but this di culty was got over by some o the passengersassisting in bailing the water out o sometanks, and carrying it as well as some

coals, rom the station-masters house tothe engines. Tese requisites supplied,a resh start was made with the wholetrain, and Oamaru was reached without

urther contretemps at about 9 oclock. Asthe train was hours overdue, there hadbeen great anxiety in town, busy-tonguedrumour having spread the report that an

accident had occurred, which led to theworst apprehensions. On the elegrapho ce opening at 7 oclock it was airly rushed by eager enquirers, and it waswith great relie that it was ound thatthere was nothing worse the matter thanthe disabling o a couple o engines; butthe public relie at the sa e return o the

train was well expressed by the loud cheerwith which the sound o her whistle wasgreeted. Te second up train consistingo the Rothwell and Possum, ten carriagesand guards van, lef Moeraki Junctionat 4.55pm with rom 600 to 700 personson board, reaching Hampden stationin about a quarter o an hour. Here was

waiting the alisman, with news o thedistress o the previous train, and the twoengines were at once detached, and in a

ew seconds away up the line and out o

way until the cutting about a mile on theOamaru side o Georges Otepopo BridgeHotel, and on the south side o the mainroad crossing was reached. Here there is asteep incline on a curve, and the Bothwellengine, upon which all the strain came, proved unequal to the task, one o hersteam pipes becoming disabled. hisbrought the train to a standstill. he

rst ve and then our carriages weredisconnected rom the rest, but the engineproving still unable to draw up even thereduced number, there was nothing orit but to return down the incline, whichwas accordingly done, the train goingback to the bridge opposite GeorgesHotel, and the alisman was sent back toHampden or assistance. It was about anhour and a hal be ore this arrived, andthe circumstance was a per ect wind all

or mine host o the Bridge Inn, whosebar was per ectly rushed. Liquoring up,pleasantly diversi ed with cock-shying atempty bottles, lled up the interval, andthe Rothwell and Possum then arriving, the train again started, the Bothwell in

ront and the other two engines behindit. he three locomotives succeeded

in dragging and pushing it to a shortdistance beyond when the next sticking-up occurred when again the train cameto a dead stop. Running back this timeto the Waianakarua siding, the Bothwellwas here lef behind, and the train wasshunted by the passengers in rear o theother two engines, which started again

    - this time ascending the incline to thetunnel, and getting two or three carriagesinto it, when again a dead stop was cometo. For the most part all these delays were

sight. As they were not expected back till9pm (nearly our hours), the greater parto the excursionists disembarked, andinvaded Hampden, the principal pointo attacking being Fishers Hotel, which

was carried by storm. As hour afer hourpassed, the delay became more and moreirksome, especially as it grew dark, andthere were no lamps in the carriages.Mr Humphries, however, produced abox o candles, and distributed two toeach carriage, which were very soonutilised, the passengers doing their

best to wile away the tedium by singingsongs, and a ew o them improvisinga ball on the verandah o the railway station, to the strains o a tin whistle, ably handled by a Mr Fricker. Te scene at thestation, about 11pm, was something to beremembered. In one waiting room werea number o gentlemen, by songs and

yarns, endeavouring to pass the time asendurably as possible, and in the one onthe opposite side were a number o ladiesand children, all thoroughly wearied out,the latter, or the most part, happily aleep.A couple o straw paliasses had beenborrowed rom the station-master, andlaid on the oor, where about a dozen

children were laid in two rows, likesardines, and covered with railway time-tables in lieu o blankets, slept the sweetsleep o in ancy, and in various cornersabout the room, wrapped in shawls orcoats, lay in ants, all also happily asleep, while a number o ladies, watchingover their charges, were nodding in

their chairs. Between these two roomsthe dancing was proceeding, the tinwhistle going merrily; now a certaindistinguished solicitor dancing a pas seul

be ore a delighted crowd o spectators, and then a quadrille, reel or round dancebeing indulged in by as many as could

ind room to ply the light antastic.Away down the line were the lights o

the train and the sounds o singing, withnow and then the wail o an in ant, orthe emphatic language o a grumblingBritisher to diversi y the proceeedings.By the courtesy o the telegraphist o theHampden o ce (Mr Ryan) messages hadbeen despatched at 7 oclock to Oamaruto relieve anxiety there, and a little afer

9 a message was received at the railway station, Hampden, announcing the sa earrival o the rst train at Oamaru, andthe agreeable intelligence that the engineswould return to Hampden immediately. Itappears, however, that they did not leaveOamaru until 10pm and hour afer hourwore away at Hampden very tediously.

At last, however (at 11.30pm) the downtrain arrived, but had to proceed on tothe junction to disembark a number o passengers, and it was hal an hour afermidnight be ore the carriages which hadbeen waiting so long had been run on tothe main line, coupled up and a resh and

nal start made or home, the disabled

engine (the alisman) ollowing closebehind, and endeavouring to assist till itwas ound necessary to disconnect her,in consequence o the violent mannerin which she jerked. She ran closebehind to the Waianakarua siding, whereshe picked up the Bothwell, and then

ollowed on to near the tunnel, where

she was stopped or a time, to the greatrelie o some o the passengers, who didnot relish having a locomotive in so close

Hello rom the Midlands o England, where Ian and I are at present living on our

57f canal boat. We have been doing so orthe past 18 months and are enjoying theunique experience o travelling the 200year old waterways, learning their history, and meeting other 'canal olk'. Some o the time we moor up in our small marinanear the town o Sta ord, which allowsus to have access to water, sanitation,

240 volt power i we choose, and parkingor our car. It's more interesting to betravelling, but as the winter draws in,it becomes more di cult. Last year wetried to go o in January or a trip, butonly got ve miles down the canal be orewe were rozen in. It elt like like oneo those Arctic expeditions o early last

century, long hours o darkness, waterand uel running low, surrounded by snow and ice....except that we were only a mile rom the conveniences o a largetown and it was delight ully cosy with ourlog burner glowing, and a ree supply o

rewood just along the canal bank a ewmetres away! We also had good television

reception. Afer ten daysor so we were able tobreak ree and chug alongto one o the many BritishWaterways service pointsdotted along the canalsto unload re use, take onwater and top up on gasand uel, so I can't really say it was too arduous, but it was certainly a

novel winter holiday. On a narrow boat there are all the

normal conveniences o a house in

miniature, except that you are solely responsible or the running o things. You turn on a tap and there is water butonly i you have kept the water tank

illed. You go to have a shower in acom ortable bathroom but only i theengine has been running and the wateris hot. Cooking is done on a normal gas

stove and oven but only i you havelugged a ull gas canister on board in thelast two months or so. oilets are o thecassette or pump-out type and have to beregularly emptied. None o it is a botheronce you get into a routine, and it makesyou eel very much in charge o your li e.O course there is a great dependence

on diesel, which is not ideal, but thereare alternatives, as on land, to keep thebattery bank topped up. Many boats havesolar panels, and quite a ew also havewind generators. It depends on whereyou live. As you can imagine solar poweroutput is not great in this country duringthe winter months, or even the summer

sometimes!Living on a boat ismarginally less expensivethan in a house, alsoagain, depending onwhere you are. Tere isa yearly licence to pay,and a mooring ee in the

marina, but as you travelrom place to place youcan moor practically

    What does 350 mean?

350 (parts per million) is the numberthat many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governmentsare now saying is the sa e upper limit

or CO2 in our atmosphere. Te currentglobal concentration o carbon dioxideis around 389ppm, and rising at about2ppm annually, so its really important we

work together to tackle it now.

How do we get to 350?his December, world leaders will

be meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark,to negotiate a new climate treaty toreduce CO2 emissions. Many arecalling Decembers con erence the mostimportant international negotiationsever, saying that it is the last possibleopportunity we have to avoid devastatingclimate change.

How do we actually reduce carbonemissions to get to 350?

Make no mistake - getting back to 350means trans orming our world. It meansbuilding solar arrays instead o coalplants. It means planting trees insteado clear-cutting rain orests. It meansincreasing e ciency and decreasing ourwaste. Getting to 350 means developinga thousand di erent solutions - all o which will become much easier i wehave a global treaty grounded in the latestscience and built around the principleso equity and justice. o get this kind o
