We, as our acquaintances will tell you, arenot early risers and Sunday morning wasno exception to this rule.

However, there are those with ourwelare at heart and we were rudelyawoken by the bedside phone at about7.30am. A sister living in Whangarei, having heard the early news broadcastsabout earthquakes in Chile and possibletsunami danger on New Zealands eastcoast, was ringing to make sure we wereawake and aware o what could happen tothe neighbourhood. We werent - awakeor aware! Well, hadnt we better dosomething about it?! Yes, perhaps wehad better and thank you or letting usknow.

We then proceeded to start the dayas or an emergency. Washed, dressed,ed pets and chickens so that they would

survive a possibly trying day(s). Hadbreakast listeningto the radio orinormation. RadioNZ National did usproud with continualnews, interviews andsituation updates.

(However, one pieceo advice was towatch the television- this appeared to be

a complete waste o time as the normalSunday morning programmes were beingscreened without even a byline alongthe bottom o the screen to indicate thatanything unusual - or indeed dangerous- was happening.)

At some stage the local re siren wento. Tis was not as expected though allthree adults in our house were underthe impression that a Civil Deenceemergency siren was dierent to the usuallong drawn out wailing that upsets thedog every time. So the dog got upset againand we wondered whether we should pay

attention or not.Ater some breakast, thought and

discussion, listening to the radio a bitmore, it was decided that tsunami or notwe should treat this event as a practicerun in preparation or what could happeneither now or in the uture - and that is

    just what we did.

Meeting people is one o the most excitingparts o moving to a new place. And or

me, having settled in Waianakarua withmy amily in December, the lawn bowlsin Hampden has been a great way to dothis. Social bowls happens rom 4pmevery Friday throughout the season oSeptember to May, at 24 Worcester Street,Hampden.

    he club provides an extremely

welcoming environment, particularlyrom a beginners point o view. WhenI headed down or my rst roll-up, onemember made sure they were there tomeet me and do introductions as peoplearrived. Others have made themselvesavailable to assist in teaching me. I havealso been able to borrow bowls rom the

shed until I acquire my own.here are both men and women

bowlers involved and a broad age range, meaning a mix o abilities and experienceto learn rom and bowl with. Tere is acore group who areregularly there, soit is quick to get to

    know people andthe camaraderieis evident withg o o d n a t u r e dbanter occurringbetween members.A drink in the clubbar aerwards, or

even on the greenwhile bowling, is agreat way o mixing

and the meat rafe (which I won the rstweek I entered lucky number 13) addsto the event.

Ten there is the bowls. Te aim othe sport is to have your bowls stop closerthan your opponents to the little whiteball (named the jack) down the other endo the green. On my rst lesson, I was toldthat in theory there are just two things toget right. One is the weight you use to getyour bowl down the surace. Te secondis the green you use. Because bowls havean o-centre weight bias you need toaim le or right to curve the bowl backas close to the centre as possible. Tis ishow much green you use. o assist, thereare dierent sized circles on each side othe bowls with the large circle going onthe outside and the small on the insidewhen lining up.

I soon discovered all this was easiersaid than done as it is the intricacies thatmake or the real un. Tese include thedirection you are bowling, the distance

the jack is away romthe mat and the wind

    conditions. Indeedmy rst experiencebowling in windyc o n d i t i o n s j u s tseemed comical. Notthat I can blame onlythe wind. Te eelingo watching your

    PRactical local action (1):

Finnies RainwateR HaRvesting systemIn this edition, the Hamraki Rag is starting what it hopes will become a regular feature."Practical local action" will be devoted to practical solutions people have found tomake life easier, more secure or less costly. We know that there are many practicaland inventive people locally who have come up with or adapted ideas which may

also be helpful to others. So please, if you are one of those people or you knowof something that you think falls into this category, let us know. It can be a way toshare our knowledge and experience. No project or idea is too big or small. Let'smake this a real melting pot of ideas that work.

Te water supply ailures in the HampdenScheme in recent years set Martin Finniethinking about how he could protect

himsel rom urther such disruptions. An additional point o water now costsabout $6,000 and that still would notsolve the reliability issue. In additionto his home, he has a number o otherbuildings on his property, so waterharvesting was an obvious alternative.

    I purchased a 25,000 litre Bailey

tank for about $2,500 and thensimply linked up all the building

    storm water

    gutters with

    standard 100mm

    PVC (and high

    strength glue)

and fed them intoit, said Martin.

h e k e y t omaking it practicalis being able to takethe stormwater pipedirectly rom roogutters down intothe ground into acommon mainlineand then up again

to eed into the top o the tank, like aninverted siphon. All that is requiredis generous pipe diameter to take ull

storm low, gutter inlets higher thanthe top o the tank, so it will ow in bygravity, provision or overlow and agood ushing outlet at the bottom o thesiphon.

he combined roo area is about450m2, so a total o 55mm o rain llsthe tank. Te average annual rainall in

Moeraki is about 600mm which meansthat there is the potential to rell the

tank about 10 timesin an average year. While Martin'ssystem is largerthen most, it sinteresting to recall

that prior to the70s and the waterscheme, everyonerelied on rainwaterharvesting. So itmakes sense thati t could aga inoer a worthwhile

When dawn broke on themorning o Tursday March

25, it was overcast and hadbeen raining during the night, but Bent, who wanted to takephotographs had been speakingto the president o HampdenSenior Citizens Club, who hasclose contacts in heaven, wethink. He had a yarn to the

Man who controls the weatherand lo and behold, beore long, there appeared a beautiul bluesky and sunshine.

Lynn C. allocated twopeople to each car, and verysoon 16 olk were on theirway, led by Lindsay who tried

to lose us up in rotters Gorgeon the way to Palmerston. Hedid not do very well as he onlymanaged to lose one.

Aer nding that car, wedrove over the SwitchbackRoad, and on to Dunback, then up the Macraes road or

Soon, aer changing carsto circulate members, we wereon our way over to the GoldenPoint Gold and ScheeliteMine, (1914 to 1944). LuckilyLindsay didnt manage to loseany bods down the manyshas still in the ground aer

so many years. here was avery interesting stop to viewthe quartz crushing artiactsbehind the bars.

Our return trip was acrossthe ridges towards aieri Peakand on to Palmerston. Whatabulous views there are up

there, but it was ever so dry.Jack L. wanted to stay butLindsay wanted him to helpshear sheep.

What we were not toldwas that the trip was also aButchers Picnic. A stopwas made in Palmerstonwhile the assembled companycompletely devastated thetowns sausage supply.

Ater an ice cream wereturned to Hampden atera lovely day out. We clockedup137 kilometres. A big thankyou to the committee oranother successul day out.

reading material. We then drove thevehicle up to the top o the neighbourshill and waited or events to develop.

o those passing on SH1 below uswe probably looked a little peculiar withour tent pitched, our table set up and usrelaxing in our chairs with binocularsat the ready, hot coee in one hand andnewspaper in the other just watching theworld hurtle past. Tis we continued todo or a couple o hours - although we

occasionally thought wheres the -xxx-?and one o us went back to the house toget it. Eventually one o us had to go downthe hill (again) because a neighbour hadpromised to call in to the house to collectan item and we elt that there should be abod there to handle things.

    Aer that it was a bit o a non-event

really. Te sea sounded a bit noisier thanusual rom time to time but that wasabout all. We did note an army armouredpersonnel carrier hurtling north andwondered i it meant something. But thenwe noticed the NZ Army band bus goingnorth too - so it probably meant nothing(except to the Army).

However, the value o this exercisewas that it did serve as a dry run. Wenow know exactly what would be neededshould there be a real emergency and howour preparations ell short.

In addition to the emergency boxon standby (which was actually verywell equipped) we now have a list o

extras that it would be very handy tohave. his list is printed in duplicateand each alternate item is ticked. Te

idea is that with two people each couldbe responsible or collecting togethercertain items thus saving time. Tis listalso notes the location o each item again

to save time. We also plan to make copieso vital documents like birth certicates, passports, insurance policies etc, placethese in waterproo bags so that eachperson has their own originals plus copieso everybody elses documentation.

List o needs and handy extras:

    Pre-packed emergency box (includes1.ood, non-battery torches, rst aidkit etc)Pre-packed 4WD kit (includes shovel,2.ashlights etc)Documentation3.Sleeping bags, tent and groundsheet4.Picnic basket (contains plates, cups,5.

cutlery)Bucket(s)6.Collapsible table and chairs7.Radio, phones (cordless and cell), Rs8.and spare batteriesPorta-loo and chemical cleanser9.Warm clothes and rain gear10.Fresh perishables rom the ridge/11.

reezer or immediate useReading material, puzzle books to12.

keep people amused/occupied at leastin the short term.

Tis list is a guide only but may be osome use to those who have not madepreparations or any emergency that may

arise. We are a household o adults - thosewith children in the house would need tomake adjustments accordingly.

Summer is the time to enjoy your lavenders, toadmire the bushes in ull bloom or to harvestthe owers or the multitude o things theycan be used or, either resh or dried.

When and how much to prune is aquestion oen asked and the answer dependson the type o lavender you grow. One rulethat applies to all lavenders is that pruning

must be done beore the rst rosts arrive.Lavender hedges need pruning twice a

year. rim sides only in spring, leaving thetops or owering. (I a ree owing hedgeis desired this could be missed.) Te secondpruning should be in autumn, cutting sidesand top hard back to maintain the shape.

Lavandula stoechas (with the little wings

at the top o the ower spike) are best given alight clip in early summer aer the rst usho owers, ollowed by a heavier cut in midautumn to keep the plants compact or thecolder months.

Lavandula dentata (French lavender)needs very little pruning unless it is grownas a hedge or it has outgrown its situation.

I pruning is required it should be done insummer.

Lavandula angustiolia and Lavandulaintermedia (English lavenders) requirepruning ater lowering or in autumn.Stoechas and English lavenders can be prunedback by up to hal. Tis keeps the bushesyoung and healthy.

Pruning should start with young plantsand be continued regularly. Lavender busheswill live or many years i tended well.

ater having the weight bias back toront is hard to describe, but would beclosest to a combination o disbelie andhumour. However, seeing someone omore experience get this wrong oncein a while (though not as oen as I do)makes mistakes a bit easier to take. And Ihave been cut a air bit o slack as peoplehave kindly looked to build condence.Overall, the challenge is great and seeingimprovement is consequently verysatisying.
