(Excerpt from History of Blair Athol Bush Sports written by Ron Scott, who was a committee member for almost 30 years, including many years as President)

The first sports were held on Easter Monday. A program was arranged with prize money of £45 and it was decided to run it for the Ambulance, as at that time the Ambulance was a very important thing to the people of Blair Athol.

All sorts of horse sports were the thing of the day. I remember well the heading of the program “There will be thrills and spills on them black soil hills”. A good mate of mine, the late Don Robertson, was the Secretary. I have never forgotten the program. Until a few years ago, I still had the program. The day was a big success and I think that thanks should go to the late Norman Flohr. Norman had a full droving plant hobbled out at the ground and I think he would have nominated every horse in his plant. The judges were Tom Baker, Albert Smith, Dick Benny and Jim Henderson.

Harry Porter was the starter. Harry was the starter for a lot of years. However, we made a profit of £90, and it was handed over to the Clermont Ambulance.

I must say at this point the Clermont business people donated all the prize money for the program, and I know because I was the one that went and collected it. The money was paid to the Ambulance committee in August, 1945, as checked with Clermont Ambulance records. As ‘Entertainment Tax’ was imposed in those days, we got a bill from the government for £15 tax, payable to the Government.

The Blair Athol Bush Sports Committee had no money, so it was decided to run dances to recover the money, but dances had to pay tax too! Without the 2 shillings per head to go to a dance, there was no way that we would have ever got out of debt. Don Robertson, Eric Leahey and myself put a dance on at Bathampton in the Bathampton Hall, the reason being that this hall was a lot cheaper than the BA hall. At the end, we were £5 short, so we paid it out of our own pockets…….

From 1947, the day was changed from Easter Monday to May Day. May Day sports had been held at the BA Hall grounds before the war. As Easter was usually wet, I mentioned earlier that the May Day was the general idea to hold the sports.

The small ring was pulled down and a much larger one was built, so we could hold the flutters.

Doug Window and I cut 150 lancewood rails at Kelly Graham’s place. The boy Vanitales and Fred Duncan were building the New Zealand Loan Company sale yards, and they carted the rails for us, as well as a lot more rails and posts for the job.

A lot of stories could be told about the three or four previous years. One that sticks in my mind was about a young boy, Doug Broughton in the flutters. His horse went over the rails with him and went bush. Another would be Din McGuinness’ horse which broke his leg in a gallop. Johnno McGuinness won a hell of a lot of races there, as well as hunts and other events. At one time, a buckjump ride was held as well.

Registered race horses were rung in against all the rules, but in the finish I think that would have caused the local policemen to stop the flutters. About 1958 was the last of the flutters.

To be continued next week.

Poppies flourish at Clermont LibraryThe Clermont Library’s ‘red poppy field’ has grown to more than 300 poppies and the Clermont community has enthusiastically embraced the ‘500 Red Poppies’ Project.

A special thank you to the Monash Lodge residents for their contribution to the project as well as the many community members who have donated knitted, crocheted and patchwork poppies.

The Isaac Libraries Regional Library Services put out ‘a call to arms’ to Isaac communities to help make 500 poppies to commemorate the Centenary of the Anzacs and thanks to the overwhelming response, the Isaac communities are close to making 1000 poppies.

You can help the ‘field of poppies’ in the Clermont Library grow by coming along to a poppy making workshop. The Clermont Library is holding poppy making workshops on Wednesdays from 2pm – 3pm and Saturdays from 9.30am – 10.30am, but drop-ins are welcome at any time.

Clermont Library will have a variety of paper, crochet, felt, crochet and knitting patterns and other craft resources for everyone to use in making poppies at workshops.

The poppies will also be used to commemorate Remembrance Day in November.

It stirred the imaginations and passions of many, evoking thoughts for some of the reconquest of the ancient Byzantine capital of Constantinople and for Jewish and Arab nationalists of the establishment of independent nations.

Defending Gallipoli: The Turkish Story by Harvey BroadbentBased on exclusive access to Turkish

archives, Defending Gallipoli reveals how the Turks reacted and defended Gallipoli.

Health Matters

Whether you’re shopping for food, cooking or eating out, health and nutrition is something that is on many people’s agenda. In fact it can be hard to avoid – ‘low fat’, ‘no added salt’ and ‘light’ claims are found on many food labels, and ‘healthier’ menu options are beginning to pop up at restaurants and fast food outlets.

In the supermarketAll packaged foods must carry certain information on the label including a nutrition information panel, ingredient list and identification of common allergens. Claims that highlight the nutrients a product contains, such as fat-free or high-fibre, are voluntary but also very common on food labels.Claims made on food labels are guided by a code of practice, so the same claim on a different food has the same meaning. Common claims on labels include:

FatsLow fat foods have been popular for a few decades, however people are now coming to realise they actually need healthy fats in their diet, and that fat-free foods still contain kilojoules. Fat related claims you will see on packs include:• Low-fat – the food must contain less than 3 grams of fat per 100 grams (which means it’s 97 per cent fat-free) or less than 1.5 grams per 100ml for liquids like milk. From these labelling rules, foods can be 97 per cent, 98 per cent or 99 per cent fat free.

• Low saturated fat – these claims can be put on foods that contain less than 1.5 grams of saturated fat per 100

grams, but the foods must also be low in fat overall. This means foods that are high in healthy fats but low in saturated fat such as nuts, avocado and vegetable oils cannot make low saturated fat claims. Fortunately the criteria for saturated fat and many other claims are being reviewed and are likely to change soon, which will allow more healthy products such as these to make claims about their low saturated fat level.

SaltMost fresh foods are naturally low in salt, so it’s added salt in processed and packaged foods and snacks that contributes to excess intakes.Low salt / low sodium claims mean the product has less than 120mg of sodium per 100g. Also look out for ‘no added salt’ products if you’re trying to minimise your sodium intake.

How to interpret nutrition information panelsThe nutrition information panel (NIP) on the product label provides information on the amount of energy (kilojoules), protein, total fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugars and sodium in the product. You may also find other nutrients such as fibre, vitamins and minerals on the panel.Nutrition panels show the amount of nutrients in an average serving of the product (which is determined by the manufacturer) and the amount of nutrients in 100 grams of the product. Serving sizes vary from one product to the next, so look at how much a serve is listed on the panel and compare this to how much of the food you’d normally eat.

When comparing two different products, it’s most useful to refer to the ‘per 100g’ column.

Healthier products are those lower in saturated fat, lower in sodium, and higher in fibre. For people watching their weight, lower kilojoule options within the same food category are also a better choice. Some food companies are trying to make healthier food selection even easier by highlighting how much of your daily kilojoule and major nutrient needs is provided by a serving of food through a ‘%Daily Intake’ or %DI counter.

The ‘average’ daily values that are used to work out the % Daily Intakes on food labels are:

Energy: 8700kJProtein: 50gFat: 70gSaturated fat: 24gCarbohydrate: 310gSugars: 90gDietary fibre: 30gSodium: 2300mg

This system does have its limitations – for instance everyone has different nutrient needs depending on age, gender, weight and activity levels. The figures used to calculate %DI can therefore be used as a rough guide only. Energy requirements for lightly active women can range from 7000 to 9000 kilojoules a day, while lightly active men can require between 9000 and 12000 kilojoules per day (more for people who are highly active).

And remember…. Protect, Prevent, Live Well

Class DescriptionGut and Butt Blastis a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD)This is a board based program, working along the principles of H.I.I.T where you are able to come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRITThis is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP Boxingis a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.
