Make sure your pool measures up

With drowning one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under five, Isaac Regional Council is urging pool owners to make sure their pool fence measures up.

Chief Executive Officer Rod Ferguson said compliant pool fencing, with active supervision and learning to swim, saves lives.

“Queensland pools, including spas and portable pools, must comply with the pool safety standard.

“If you’re not sure, contact Council and our licensed pool safety inspectors can check if it’s up to standard for a cost-recovery fee,” he said.

“It’s a small price to pay to improve safety for your loved ones, friends and family in our communities.”

“If your pool is compliant, the inspector will issue you with a pool safety certificate.”

Information is available on the QBCC website – www.qbcc.qld.gov.au – to help home owners to assess their pools for compliance.

For non-compliance with the pool safety standard, there is an on-the-spot fine of $824.60 for individuals and $2,356 for companies.

The maximum penalty a court can impose is $19,437.

All residential pools must also be registered with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission.

Penalties for failing to register a pool include an on-the-spot fine of $235.60 for individuals or $706.80 for companies. The court can impose a maximum penalty of $2,356.

Make sure your pool measures up: Get it checked by Isaac Regional Council licensed Pool Safety Inspector Jeff Graham.

Urgently needed are some willing and able volunteer committee members to help continue the annual Coal and Gold Festival.

This year will include some recognition and remembrance of the 1916 flood. All ideas will be welcomed and tabled.

The festival is a significant event on the calendar each year for Clermont community helping to encourage tourists to stay in the area longer and flowing on to the local businesses.

Gold Fest started back in 1998 as a community event based around putting the town on the map, promoting the area, encouraging tourist and promoting local business.

The venues have changed a couple of times over the years from Rose Harris Park to the Show grounds back to Rose Harris Park and is currently being held at Centenary Park.

The event is based around market stall holders selling a variety of wares generally of a nature that is not available locally; the committee provides the venue, entertainment to draw people to support the event and the overall coordination and promotion of the event.

Local schools have always been involved with numerous items of entertainment. Locals are also encouraged to have market stalls.

If a full committee cannot be recruited the event will not proceed this year and could potentially not happen again in the future.

A meeting will be held on February 24 at 22 Blamey St at 7.30pm to determine the future of the event.

For further information please contact Danny Mckay on 49831880.

Ah the Day we metcontributed by Andrea Moller

Trepidation, a gentle excitement, feeling challenged.

All feelings generated by the unknown, for the unknown.

Into the future I stepped. A future of involvement outside the home - again.

Trepidation because I would be placing myself out in a public venue – opening myself to judgement all in the hope of improving my self confidence and communication skills.

But particularly wanting to improve my public speaking skills to give me the confidence to express my thoughts publicly – ah the freedom of speech - The Australian Way – taken for granted as our right!

To think clearly and speak truthfully, out loud.

Gentle excitement to be amongst others who also wanted to learn, to practise correct meeting procedures and learn fully the duties of office bearers of Clubs.

I was excited to be involved in an environment that fosters and encourages, where the critique is constructive and helpful. The clarity of thought and love of the English language promoted with genuine fellowship.

Feeling challenged to continue my education in writing and presenting, I loyally put in the effort to do my best with the skills I brought to the room.

The Day We Met – Forum and I.

I had been vaguely aware of Forum throughout the years but being very preoccupied with motherhood, animals and wifey things, had not thought this was an option for me.

My life was full, too full of commitments, could I make a space in my life for this?

A weak moment, or a strong moment, when I decided to step out and try something new. If involved with any organisation, I try to attend all meetings, children not-withstanding.

So, another meeting. Not an unusual situation for this woman.

I love to read and read and read.

I have scribbled some but never been satisfied that I was wordy enough. Would my scribbling make the grade?
