Open arms for new recruits
Isaac Regional Council has welcomed its largest ever intake of trainees and apprentices, with 14 new recruits added to the fold.
The successful candidates were selected from an impressive 271 applications.
Located in Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount and Moranbah the recruits will cover nine different industries - business administration, horticulture, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plant operations, water and sewerage and libraries.
Mayor Anne Baker said Council was excited to welcome the next generation of local government.
“Over the next one to four years they will gain skills, experience and a nationally recognised qualification,” she said.
“As an equal opportunity employer it’s great to have two women joining us in carpentry and civil construction.”
Deputy Mayor, Geoff Bethel welcomed the new starters and highlighted the benefits of working for Council.
“One of the great things about working for local government is the opportunity to help shape communities and impact lives,” he said.
“Our trainees and apprentices will contribute to making Isaac a better place to live, work and play.”
This year sees an increase to Council’s intake of trainees and apprentices due to a subsidy boost from the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslander’s For Work First Start Program.

There are three types of diabetes:
• Type 1-Auto immune reaction not linked to lifestyle choices.
• Type 2- Progressive condition related to lifestyle factors and family history.
• Gestational- Occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after the baby is born.
With 80-90% of all cases of diabetes being Type 2 and this number increasing, what can you do to prevent DIABETES TYPE 2?
Risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include:
• having family members with type 2 diabetes
• having high blood pressure
• being overweight or obese
• have a sedentary lifestyle
• having poor diet
• having previously had gestational diabetes
Symptoms of diabetes type 2:
Mostly there are no symptoms, however, sometimes people with type 2 diabetes may have excessive thirst, frequent passing of urine, hunger and weight loss, mood swings, headaches, feeling dizzy, leg cramps and slow healing wounds.

Goodbye Margie - thanks for the memoriescontributed by Julie Abel
A bright new shiny door is opening for Margaret (Margie) Barwick, local Clermont resident. Margie is moving to Roma to be with her family Chrissy, Lance and grandson Cooper. Although Margie is excited to be spending time with her much loved daughter and grandson she is sad at leaving Clermont, her home town.
Margie was born in Clermont and lived with her parents, Merv and May Quinney in Herschel Street until the family moved to Albany Creek when Margie was six years old. It was here that Margie grew up, developed her love of horses and met her life-long friend Lorraine.
Margie has always been game to try anything and, throughout her life has met all challenges that have come her way. She moved around a lot. Margie was a cook, has driven trucks and worked with horses, including her involvement in the Pony Club, whenever she could.
Maggie has three grown daughters, Chrissy, Shannon and Amanda.
Ten years ago Margie moved back to Clermont and lived for a while in Monash Street until moving into her caravan in the Clermont Caravan Park. She has been in Clermont ever since.
During the last ten years Margie has been a cook at the Peppercorn Motel and the Roadhouse, worked in various roles at the Clermont Caravan Park and driven for Alert Couriers. She has been involved in many community organisations and events.
Margie faced her greatest challenge when she had a near fatal car accident several years ago. The crash left her with serious injuries but, like the trooper she is, Margie fought back and didn’t allow her injuries to define her life.
Margie’s interests and passions are endless. She loves the bush, gold and detecting. She has generously shared her knowledge and time with the visitors who come to Clermont year after year and with those just passing through.
Her other loves are of course horses, Puddin’ her cat, her unique garden, full of roses and gnomes and her grandson Cooper. Puddin’, the garden and gnomes will all be making the trip to Roma with her.
A part of Clermont will leave with Margie. She has been a wonderful ambassador for Clermont over the years, especially with the visitors in the Caravan Park. Her unique personality and unstinting generosity will be missed.
Now as the door closes on the last ten years we wish Margie all the very best for the next decade and beyond. Hope we see you back here one day Margie and thanks for the memories.
Thank youWe the families of the late Connie Ede, wish to extend
our thanks and gratitude to the Doctor’s, nurses and domestic staff at Montcler for their
wonderful care of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Connie Ede,
who passed on to God’s care after many years in Montcler.
Your kindness and support will always be remembered.
CLERMONT RAGThe
Well today, Monday May 23 2016 will remain in my mind for some time.
Today I discovered a true friend of mine had died and unfortunately I was the one that made the discovery. Leo was a true friend and although I had only known him for about 10 years, (short term in Clermont), I could say that bloke would have given you the shirt off his back.
It is sad to see one of the characters of the community pass on and of late it seems that more and more the characters I have come to know are suffering or passing on. That is what happens when you become attached to a town for some time, you lose good friends and you watch others struggle through life. I can see Leo at the pearly gates waiting for Saint Peter to mark him off the roll, pulling a long breath on his cigarette and saying, “Now did I tell you about the time.....”. You will be missed Leo and condolences to all your family.
Another reason today was special was I met a truly inspirational young woman by the name of Nicole from the Rogue and Rouge Foundation. She spoke to a gaggle of us parents at the school inviting us to connect as a community to help our young people on their journey through life.
The message I received from her somewhat interactive talk was that we need to help our kids follow their dreams, give them a hug and don’t worry iif they get a little bit out there with ideas. Unconditional love is what they need.
I as a parent aspire to achieve this, I as a police officer aspire to help other parents with their troubles surrounding kids. Lets band together and as the old proverb says ‘it takes a community to raise a child’.
Visit the Rogue and Rouge website and thanks to Ms Jansen from the high school for organising and Glencore for sponsoring the visit.
I also endorse the Matt Stanley foundation. Matt’s dad, Paul, visited the school the other day to talk to the grade 12’s concerning teenage issues and the walk away chill out campaign. Matt was killed by another teenage boy at a party where alcohol played a big part. Paul’s story is tragic but it is inspirational to see a father trying to get a positive outcome out of such a bleak and prevalent issue.
I implore people to do just that if you are confronted with a situation, walk away. Somebody might goad you by calling you a coward, certainly not me or any of my colleagues and I would suggest a majority of the town. The consequences can be harsh with one punch ending someones life and the other being put away for life.
On the crime front not a lot happening. We have had fuel stolen from a pump on site at a Kilcummin property. We are chasing up a registration number that was sighted by a witness. Keep you posted.
The other night Clermont Police intercepted a vehicle on the highway which had indications of prostitution. A male driver of the vehicle is helping police with inquiries and evidence was seized on the night. Don’t try to guess what the evidence was.
That’s about it for now. Hope everyone had a good time at the Show. As I write this the rain is starting. I know Show Day, but since living in Clermont I seem to love rain. Don’t we all.

Thank youWe the families of the late Connie Ede, would like to thank the Clermont Catholic ladies and the RSL for the excellent catering and service

We would also like to thank everyone who assisted us during this sad time. The
kindness and support of so many friends and community members was very much
appreciated and will be remembered always.
