CLERMONT RAG The Community Newsletter Friday May 15, 2015 Young Farmers’ Challenge - a day in the life of a farmer As part of centre ring entertainment, a new initiative of the 2015 Clermont Show – The Isaac Region’s Show will be staged on Show Wednesday 27th May after the Grand Parade, presentations and Rooftop Express Arena Spectacular. Exciting to watch and fun to be part of, the Young Farmers’ Challenge starting at about 2pm, will showcase the agricultural skills of farmers in the Isaac region as well as linking their daily chores to the many and varied sections of the local show, in a ‘winner takes all’ event. A relay-style team event, the challenge will depict the diversity in the everyday life of a farmer. Enthusiastic organisers, reigning Central Highlands Rural Ambassador, Zoe Rickertt and 2014 Clermont Miss Showgirl Runner-up, Ria Garside, have been planning the event for many months. Six team challenges will be positioned in centre ring, with the team members progressing through the event in logical sequence, similar to a relay race. Much creative thought has been involved in deciding the actual tasks to be completed. With Zoe being one of our local vets, one would expect that a veterinary related task will be on the list as one of the six challenges. According to co-organiser, Zoe, “The objectives of the challenge this year are to promote an array of skills and techniques used by farmers, while using appropriate equipment through a set of practical field activities, as well as promoting safety at work and showcasing the Isaac region as an area of energetic, hardworking and multi-skilled people, in an action packed demonstration.” “This event is definitely not restricted to farmers. All groups in the Isaac region are encouraged to nominate,” Zoe added, “We aim to have a team from each of the towns in Isaac.” Four people, eighteen years of age or older, are required for each mixed- sex team. An obvious team colour or uniform for identification purposes, covered footwear and appropriate clothing for outdoor activities are requirements. All teams must be nominated by Friday 22nd May, with $50 entry fee and all appropriate paper work completed by this time. The Queensland Young Farmers’ Challenge is an initiative of the Queensland Shows Next Generation group. As such, the highest rank team that fulfils the regulations for the Central Highlands Agricultural Show Societies (CHASS) Young Farmers’ Challenge will be eligible to progress to the sub- chamber finals. To nominate or for more information about this exciting new event, please contact Zoe Rickertt [email protected] or Ria Garside [email protected] or read more on Facebook – Clermont Show. Young Farmers’ Challenge - a day in the life of a farmer

As part of centre ring entertainment, a new initiative of the 2015 Clermont Show – The Isaac Region’s Show will be staged on Show Wednesday 27th May after the Grand Parade, presentations and Rooftop Express Arena Spectacular.

Six team challenges will be positioned in centre ring, with the team members

progressing through the event in logical sequence, similar to a relay race. Much creative thought has been involved in deciding the actual tasks to be completed. With Zoe being one of our local vets, one would expect that a veterinary related task will be on the list as one of the six challenges.

According to co-organiser, Zoe, “The objectives of the challenge this year are to promote an array of skills and techniques used by farmers, while using appropriate equipment through a set of practical field activities, as well as promoting safety at work and showcasing the Isaac region as an area of energetic, hardworking and multi-skilled people, in an action packed demonstration.”

“This event is definitely not restricted to farmers. All groups in the Isaac region are encouraged to nominate,” Zoe added, “We aim to have a team from each of the towns in Isaac.”

Four people, eighteen years of age or older, are required for each mixed-sex team.

Welcome back to the Clermont 10000 steps program. This year, we will not be running a 10000 steps walking challenge but, during May and June we will provide weekly activity ideas and relevant supporting information to help people think about their lifestyle and health choices.

Physical activity is a great place to start when making lifestyle changes to improve well-being.

Finding opportunities to move more can benefit us in so many ways:• Cardiovascular disease prevention• Prevention of some cancers such

as bowel and breast cancer (see the Cancer Council Queensland’s website for more information) www.cancerqld.org.au/page/prevention/nutrition_and_physical_activity

• Injury prevention (falls etc)• Type 2 diabetes prevention and

control• Mental health benefits• Reduction of joint swelling in

sufferers of arthritis• Boosts immunity• Reduction of illnesses associated

with ageing

Making changes to your lifestyle isn’t always easy, and sometimes making small changes can have a huge impact on your health. The good news is that regardless of the types of changes we need to make, reliable information and support is out there to suit everyone.

In addition to physical activity, smoking, nutrition, alcohol consumption and obesity are all widely regarded as being the lifestyle behaviours that have the most impact on our health and wellbeing.

So while you are improving your physical activity level it is important to improve other behaviours that need a little improvement. Or you might set yourself the goal to target one of these other behaviours after you are comfortable with your new higher level of activity.

Understanding how each of these lifestyle choices can affect us is a good first step towards making change.

Over the next few weeks a brief description of these behaviours and have provided links to national guidelines, further information and support for those who are seeking to make changes to their lifestyles will be offered to help you set and realise your health goals.

More than physical activityWeekly Challenge: Never underestimate the power of incidental exercise! This week we want you to focus on increasing how much you physically move each day.

Each day this week, we want you to choose one of the following:• Ditch your transport a little bit

earlier – park the car a block away, get off the bus a stop earlier, walk to the shops instead of taking the car, park in a spot furthest away from the supermarket – just leave the transport behind for the last part of your commute or journey.

• Set a timer for 30 minutes and every time it goes off, get up and move – this could be a simple as getting out of you chair and stretching your arms above your head or you could even go for a walk around the block. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you move every 30 minutes.

• Do an active activity – play sport, take your kids, go out dancing, go for a hike/walk with a friend.

• Take the stairs! • Get up off the couch and change

the channel on the TV (or pop the remote beside the TV).

• Order your coffee and then walk around the block while you’re waiting for it to be made.

Reminder: No-smoking laws for Queensland Health

On January 1, 2015, smoking was banned at all Queensland public and private hospitals and health facilities, and for 5 metres beyond their boundaries.

These no-smoking laws apply at all times, and to all staff and patient residential areas on healthcare facility land, and include the use of all smoking products, including regular cigarettes and devices commonly known as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).

Quitline (13 78 48) is a confidential, free service for people who want to quit smoking. The service will provide you with information, advice and assistance tailored to your particular needs. Counsellors are available 7am–10pm, 7 days a week.

Three young ladies have nominated for the 2015 Miss Showgirl Awards, two for the senior section and one for the Junior Miss Showgirl. Casey Clarke, a twenty-one year old stationhand at “Narrien” west of Clermont attended High School at Nyngan in central New South Wales. With a Diploma in Agriculture, Casey has been living and working in the Clermont area for the past two years and would like to continue to broaden her knowledge of the cattle industry. A plan to live in America and work with cutting and reining trainers to expand her skills and knowledge of the horse industry is one of Casey’s ambitions.

Twenty-five year old April Roth has been teaching in Clermont for the past year. April is a football enthusiast and strong supporter of the Broncos and Cowboys NRL teams. Her hobbies include scrapbooking, improving her fitness levels and enjoying time with friends at many of the special places that Clermont has to offer, such as the Rodeo, Races, Show and Theresa Creek Dam. With a love of exploring new places and immersing herself in different cultures, it is not surprising that April has a long list of countries to visit on her wish list.

Junior Miss Showgirl nominee, Cheyanne Sondergeld enjoys listening to music, singing, writing and playing soccer. Fifteen year old Cheyanne believes that it is important for the youth of Clermont to become involved in community events such as the local show.

Entrants will take part in a relaxed judging schedule at the Blair Athol Hall on Saturday, commencing with morning tea with the judges. A one-on-one interview will be followed by lunch with the three judges, who have been invited from various towns across the Central Highlands. The showgirls will join in the fun at the Fab Flirty Fifties High Tea where the announcement of the 2015 Clermont Miss Showgirl and Junior Miss Showgirls will take place.

Congratulations to Cheyanne, April and Casey for nominating in the Miss Showgirl competition. The Clermont Show Committee wishes all three girls an enjoyable and interesting day of judging on Saturday, and looks forward to meeting just some of the passionate young people within our community.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Health Matters

The importance of families: National Family week May 15-21“The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family”. Lee Lacocca.

What makes a strong family? Each year, National Families week highlights one aspect of family with a goal of generating conversation about family dynamics and challenges. With a theme of ‘Stronger Families, Stronger Communities ‘the aim in 2015 is to celebrate the vital role that families play in community wellbeing.

The week is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life. It highlights the critical role that families play in teaching, supporting and nurturing children, especially as they grow.

There are simple things you can do to celebrate family week. You could, for example, take an extra 15 minutes a day to talk, listen and connect within your family. Maybe talk as a family about things that make your family strong and things that can be worked on. Other ideas are: have a family movie marathon, or contact family you have not heard from for a while.

Previous themesFamily week has frequently selected discussion points to encourage families to discuss and address the challenges that may face them as a

family and to work out how to have the best family life they could.

Previous themes have included:

• ‘Families working together: Getting the balance right.’

Encouraging people to think about the way families can work together to achieve a happy and healthy lifestyle\When families work together, everyone benefits.

• ‘Families make all the difference: helping kids to grow and learn’.

Encouraging people to think about the valuable role families play in helping children to develop, learn and grow, and reflect on the influence families have on a child’s wellbeing.

• ‘Sticking together: families in good and tough times.’

Encouraging everyone to think about the things that make their family strong in both good and tough times whatever their circumstances.

• ‘The best start: supporting happy healthy families.’

Celebrating the vital role that families play and particularly to highlight the importance of giving every child a happy and healthy childhood.

• ‘Celebrate how everyone makes a difference.’

Celebrating the many different people within families who make families united and strong and the many different types of families across society, each deserving respect and acknowledgement.

• ‘Work and Family: getting the balance right.’

All Australians, particularly working parents and employers, were urged to find ways to generate ideas and take actions which would improve work-family balance for themselves and others.

• ‘FITT Families’

Families Investing in Time Together.’

Reflected the importance of making an investment in family time and remembering that the family unit itself, as well its members, need special tending if it is to be strong.

• ‘Take time for TLC’

Talking, listening and connecting.

Focussing on parenting and young people aged between 12 and 18 years.

As the late Princess Dianna said: “Family is the most important thing in the world”.

The challenge is to nurture and respect it.

Please visit www.familiesaustralia.org.au. For more information on Families Australia and the important work they do advocating for families.
