Blair Athol Bush Sports celebrates 70 years There were ‘Thrills and Spills on them Black Soil Hills’ on the first weekend of May when the Blair Athol Bush Sports celebrated its 70th Anniversary. Large crowds, high nominations of competitors in all events, combined with perfect autumn weather allowed the committee to host an unforgettable weekend.
Reminiscing of the good old days, 260 dinner guests, mostly past and present BA committee members, supporters, competitors and their families, celebrated in style on Friday night at the Celebration Dinner. Golden Roast caterers provided an excellent meal, while many present entertained the crowd with their memories of Blair Athol from the past. Stories brought to life a bygone era, from grand buckjump rides where competitors brought their own horse to compete on, to the time and effort young ladies spent on hand-sewing their gowns to compete for “Belle of the Ball” at the old Blair Athol Hall. The crowd were most enthusiastic to dance the night away to music provided by “Time Lapse”, featuring Danny McKay, Brian and Marg Fuller, Doug Bettridge, Lance Benney and Hayley Howe. This was enhanced by an excellent display of memorabilia from past times.
Old trophies from the 1950s, ribbons for all events from Cigarette Races to the infamous BA Flutters and photographic recollections dating back to the first BA Bush Sports in 1945, all returned to BA once more to relive past memories.
The Blair Athol committee is extremely grateful to all supporters who donated prize money for the many horse sport and rodeo events held over the weekend, with Isaac Regional Council, Allflex, and JBS helping to fund the dinner.
Campdrafting was the main horse sport entertainment for three days with the new cut-out design proving to be a hit with all competitors. Tim and Jeff Cook with their band of helpers had spent many days perfecting the new design. This allowed over 50 competitors an hour through the course and with the excellent line of steers and heifers from ‘Niagara’ and ‘Bendemeer’ some top quality campdrafting was on display. Perhaps the highlight, with historical connections, was the winner of the Clermont Livestock Open Draft Heritage Buckle, Susan Salmond, riding her stallion Lestree Le Docteur. Sue had won her first campdraft at Blair Athol 20 years previously riding Amber, the great grandmother of Le Docteur.
Record numbers of children lined up for the gymkhana events on Saturday morning, and the first year of holding an Australian High School Rodeo attracted large nominations and a terrific show with spectacular rides and some equally spectacular falls from the strong line-up of bucking stock.
A full list of competition results and many great photos can be found on the “BA Bush Sports” Facebook page. Once final profits are calculated it is anticipated that BA Bush Sports will again be able to make a sizeable donation to charities. The BA committee thanks all sponsors, competitors, cattle and bucking stock donors, and helpers and spectators during the weekend involved in the 2015 event. The club welcomes new members at any time.

Australia’s best – national win for Isaac’s flying fox campaign
Isaac Regional Council (IRC) is one of Australia’s best communicators, winning a 2015 Government Communications Australia Award presented in Sydney last week.
Fast becoming a leader for safe and effective flying fox dispersals, IRC was the only Queensland Council to take home a national award.
Isaac Mayor Anne Baker thanked Isaac communities and said the award showed the best outcomes are achieved when Council and community work together.
“This coordinated campaign was about proactively communicating with affected residents to achieve a fast, cost effective successful dispersal,” said Mayor Baker.
Middlemount Councillor, Jane Pickels, experienced a migration and dispersal of 50,000 flying foxes in her community last October.
“I was honoured to accept the award alongside Senior Communications Officer Teresa Vella on behalf of Council.”
“Last year we worked closely with residents in Middlemount and Moranbah to disperse a total of 80,000 flying foxes.”
“The success of the campaign would not have been possible without the dedication and expertise of Council’s Environmental Services team and contracted ecology agents,” said Cr Pickels.
Submitted by the IRC Brand, Media and Communication Team, ‘How we outfoxed the bats’ won the category for Best Communications/Engagement (Shire/Rural Council) across the country.
The submission outlined the benefits of a holistic approach to communication and engagement activities to manage two simultaneous flying fox dispersals
in Middlemount and Moranbah during October 2014.
This is the second national award achieved by IRC’s Brand, Media and Communication Team with a win in last year’s Government Communication Awards for Best Marketing/Public Relations Campaign for Shire/Rural Council.
Mackay Regional Council was also a finalist in the award category Best Advocacy/ Public Affairs.

Skate parks gain new shade Isaac Regional Council has commissioned new hard roof shade structures for skate parks in Dysart, Moranbah and Middlemount with installation starting this week.
Mayor Anne Baker said it is yet another positive addition to our communities under Council’s SHARP program; Strengthening Healthy and Attractive Regional Places.
“I’m pleased to announce we are installing hard roof shade structures rather than shade sails,” she said.
“The new fit for purpose design will replace any existing structures and aim to deliver long-term infrastructure to our communities.”
“I look forward to seeing youth enjoy the shaded skate parks, for many years to come,” Mayor Baker said
Council’s focus on improving the region’s skate parks under the SHARP Program has included the recent Graffiti Art Workshops held at various skate parks during National Youth Week.
The workshops, run by graffiti artist Mark Paddick and attended by youth, now bring a colourful street-art edge to skate bowls and ramps.
“Our skate parks are now looking great and are fast becoming a vibrant place for our region’s youth to gather and enjoy,” Mayor Baker said.
Council has also installed two new picnic settings, a standalone shade structure, new bin and water bubbler at the Middlemount Skate Park.
Council would like to advise that the following Skate Parks will be closed during the following time periods to allow for construction of the shade structures:

24 new iPads for Dysart State School Dysart State Primary School students now have better access to digital learning with 24 new iPads provided by an Isaac Regional Council community grant.
Mayor Anne Baker said Council was proud to help students achieve a bright future by supporting play and learning initiatives.
“The school community is a cornerstone for families and the success of our region,” she said.
“As well as these iPads, our grants have helped with two major shades structures at Mistake Creek and Moranbah East State Schools and play equipment at St Josephs in Clermont,” Mayor Baker said.
Dysart State School P&C Vice President Angela Renton said the addition of 24 new iPads would be of great benefit to the school.
“We are grateful for this huge injection of support for our students and teachers,” she said.
“iPads are especially useful for children with learning disabilities and teachers can use them interactively with classroom smart boards for group learning,” she said.
The Dysart State School P&C applied for the grant to add to the school’s recent investment of 12 iPads and an iMac computer. “Technology is the way of the future and I’m pleased we can prepare our students for this exciting new world,” said Ms Renton.

More than physcial activityNutritionProper nutrition is vital for good health and well-being. Food provides our bodies with the energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals to live, grow, function properly, and avoid disease. We need a wide variety of foods to provide the right amounts of nutrients for good health.
The Australian Government National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) publish the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Here, you’ll find up-to-date information on how to make sure your diet is balanced for maximum nutritional benefit. http://www.eatforhealth.gov.au
The Queensland Government has included a nutrition page on its website which includes information, links to resources and publications.http://www.qld.gov.au/health/staying-healthy/diet-nutrition/index.html
Weekly Challenge: rethinking your favourite foodsEating and enjoying what you eat is an important part of life.
The challenge is to eat things that you like while ensuring that your body is given all the nutrients and essential goodies from food so that it is able to function at its best. There are many ways that you can do this, for example:
• Make your own hamburgers at home. Use healthy ingredients and watch your fat content.
• Oven bake some potato or sweet potato for healthier chips.
• Choose a good chocolate and limit yourself to smaller amounts every now and then.
• Make a pizza using pita bread, lots of vege toppings and reduced fat cheese.
• Watch your serving sizes. If you like lasagne, just have a small piece and fill your plate with salad or veges.
The challenge this week is to list your three favourite comfort foods, then come up with a way of making them healthier and more productive for your body.

There is a widespread belief that Australian country women can cook a mean sponge and that their skills with thrifty craft are considerable. These old wives tales were very much proven as fact on Tuesday May 19 when the Clermont MPHS, skilfully coordinated by employees Judy Smith and Gloria Johnson held their annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in the hospital foyer.
Along with raffles, free health checks, the ‘Can Do’ cow and a table laden with delicious home made treats, a ‘best Beanie for Brain cancer’ competition was held.
Dr Jan Hansen, our visiting RFDS Women’s health doctor awarded prizes to Angela Bitcher and Margie Clark for best and original beanies respectively, while Phyllis Smith won the popular choice beanie.
The Clermont MPHS Director of Nursing, Liz Livingstone extended her thanks to Judy and Gloria and all of the staff, helpers and attendees, saying that she had many people telling her what a great morning it had been.
“It is great to see so many people coming out to support this annual event and to be actively involved with our local health service in a positive, meaningful way.”
“All of us have been touched by cancer and having an opportunity to support research into and provide funds to support those people and their families suffering from cancer is welcome,” she said.
Judy and Gloria were delighted with the support from the community, with more then 60 people attending and over $720 raised for the Cancer Council. Thank you to everyone.

Health Matters
Meet your kidneys – Kidney health week May 24 - May 30This year’s Kidney Health Week focuses on introducing Australians to their kidneys, and educating them about the role they play, including their vital function of regulating blood pressure. It aims for Australians to understand how important kidneys are to their overall health and to keep a look out for risk factors leading to kidney disease.
How do our kidneys work?
The kidneys play a major role in maintaining your general health and wellbeing. Think of them as an extremely sophisticated, environmentally friendly, waste disposal system which sorts non-recyclable waste from recyclable waste, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while also cleaning your blood.
Most people are born with two kidneys, each one about the size of an adult fist, are bean-shaped and weigh around 150 grams each. The kidneys are located at both sides of your backbone just under the rib cage or above the small of your back. They are protected from injury by a large padding of fat, your lower ribs and several muscles.
In each kidney, blood is filtered through millions of mini filters called ‘nephrons’.
The excess fluid and unwanted
chemicals from this filtering process become urine and are passed from the kidneys to your bladder.
What do your kidneys do?
Our kidneys are small biological marvels with a fascinating design. Every hour your blood supply circulates through the kidneys about 12 times. Each day your kidneys process around 200 litres of blood, with around one to two litres of waste leaving the body as urine.
The kidneys also play a role in the production and regulation of several important hormones and enzymes, which help to:
• control blood pressure
• make red blood cells
• maintain strong and healthy bones
All this makes the kidneys a vital player in your body’s mechanism and your overall health.
How can I look after my kidneys?
There are many risk factors that can contribute to kidney disease, and it’s important to be aware of these risks and take the right steps to prevent kidney damage.
• Stop smoking
• Keep your blood pressure below 130/90 and maintain healthy levels
of cholesterol
• If you have diabetes make sure you actively treat your blood glucose levels - normal levels are 4-6 mmol/L before meals and 4-8 mmol/L two-hours after meals
• It’s important to have your cholesterol levels checked regularly - recommended level is no higher than 5.5 mmol/litres
• Lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain healthy weight, be active for more than 30 minutes most days
• Eat a balanced healthy diet low in saturated fats
• Drink plenty of fluids and listen to your thirst
• Limit alcohol intake
• Enjoy life
The role of the kidneys is often underrated when we think about our health. In fact, the kidneys play an important role in the daily workings of our body.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.
Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.
