CLERMONT RAG The Community Newsletter Friday July 10 2015 Growing up in Clermont Calendar Launch The launch of the calendar went extremely well. A small, but very supportive gathering at the RSL Club on Wednesday July 1. We also had a good show of support from the GUIC Administration team. Four of us attended and also Kate Keyte who was the photographer of the first “Icon” calendar. The GUIC Group raised about $350 dollars which will go towards the next print of the 18mth calendar. Donations were presented to Peggy Williams, the Clermont representative of Rockhampton and CQ Legacy Inc for $350 and $500 to Juanita Finger, treasurer of Clermont and Districts Serviceman’s Club. These were the funds raised from the Icons Calendar, after the group purchased coolers and mugs with the signature logo and outlay for the first print of this new calendar. This merchandise is available for sale at Head To Toes in Cornett’s Plaza, at the local Senior Citizen’s Markets and on the GUIC FaceBook page via email. Ms Finger said they were very grateful for the generous donation from the Growing Up In Clermont Group. She said Clermont and Districts Servicemen’s Club were very impressed with the presentation and formatting of the calendar, and in particular, the tribute to the local War Heroes. Legacy’s Peggy Williams said she wanted to thank the group for their kind support. “I would like to thank Debbie and the GUIC group for this donation and appreciate them thinking of Legacy,” she said. We have a Father’s Day raffle running at the moment with tickets being $1 each. The prize includes 2 x logo mugs, 2 x logo coolers and the 18Month Calendar - a Tribute to Our War Heroes and 100 years on from the Great Flood. The raffle will be drawn on Saturday September 5 at the markets, just in time for Father’s Day. Growing up in Clermont Calendar Launch

The launch of the calendar went extremely well.

Clermont Landscaping and Beautification Works

Council is pleased to be undertaking a series of landscaping and beautification works across Clermont starting July 13 and extending throughout August.

The Clermont Entrance Precinct Roundabout will be greatly enhanced with the planting of large shrubs and bottle trees, feature boulders and landscaped gardens to create a beautiful and welcoming entrance to Clermont.

Garden rejuvenation works around Clermont will heighten appeal along Capella Street, at the Clermont Library, Mural

Train and around the shelter at Hoods Lagoon.

Council has engaged contractors to undertake tree felling in areas around town to minimise impact to overhead power lines and remove dead branches.

Residents are advised that there may be minor impacts to traffic while some works are underway.

Health Matters

Driving Matters – medical conditions, mobile phones and practical driving assessment

Did you know that the chances of being involved in an injury accident are very high? Two out of three motorists will be involved in an injury accident during their life! To add insult to injury (pun sort of intended), as a motorist you can expect to be involved in an accident once every 10 years. Even if you’re the best driver in the world, you can’t control other peoples driving. There is a 1 in 20 chance that the crash you have will involve a serious injury.

These figures do not include death by motor vehicle accident, which is one of the leading causes of death for all age groups 0-65+.

As such, there are a number of projects surfacing that are designed to reduce these scary figures.

Enhanced practical driving test to be rolled out

On Monday June 29 an enhanced Q-SAFE practical driving test was rolled out across Queensland for learner drivers.

The test enhancements will apply to all practical driving tests (car, heavy vehicle and motorcycle) as they relate to safe driving skills and behaviours that are relevant to driving all classes of vehicles, and includes a zero tolerance to speeding and increasing the significance of not maintaining an appropriate following distance and not displaying appropriate hazard perception.

The enhanced test also places a greater emphasis on the driving examiners providing meaningful feedback to the candidate at the end of the test.

New 22 day action plan helps motorists break deadly mobile phone habit

Queensland motorists are being encouraged to participate in the 22 day Distraction Action Plan (DAP) to help them break the habit of using their mobile phone while driving.

Research has shown in the two seconds a driver’s eyes are off the road attending to a phone, a vehicle moving at 60km/h travels 33 metres. Using a mobile phone while driving has also been likened to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of more than 0.08.

With this in mind, a new mobile phone distractions campaign has been launched demonstrating to drivers that using your mobile phone while driving is effectively driving ‘blind’. At the heart of the campaign is the new 22 day Distraction Action Plan that provides motorists with support and helpful solutions to avoid using their phones while driving. By signing up to the 22 day DAP drivers will receive helpful email tips and support for three weeks - the time it takes to break a bad habit and form a better one.

For more information or to sign up visit www.jointhedrive.qld.gov.au and join the drive to save lives.

Being aware of your medical status - Hypodrive

HYPODRIVE® is a national educational awareness program and road safety initiative aimed at providing road safety education for individuals diagnosed with diabetes, in order to assist in reducing motor vehicle accidents and fatalities on Australian roads, simultaneously promoting healthy lifestyles and creating awareness among drivers.

As a campaign Hypodrive is specifically targeted at those with diabetes who may be at risk of experiencing a ‘hypo’ episode while driving. Behaviours and responses that may result from a ‘hypo’ include dizziness, a lack of concentration, shaking, blurred vision, weakness, hunger, sweating, shaking, headache, drowsiness, weakness and a general change in behaviour. The goal of the program is to educate diabetic sufferers and people responsible for training, assessing and generally driving with a diabetic that their Blood Glucose level (BGL) needs to be above 5.

There is an emphasis in the program about risk management, which offers free driving lessons for new and old drivers aimed at providing them with the necessary skills they will need in order to prepare themselves for the extra challenges they might face and how to control their vehicle in the event that they experience a hypoglycemic or hyperglycaemic event.

Another of the key goals of this program is to identify other underlying medical conditions among drivers and to put in similar protective measures.

For further information please go to www.hypodrive.com.au.

Clermont Groundwater and Environment Reference Group community members ready for a new term

Continuing and newly appointed members of the Clermont Groundwater and Environment Reference Group (GERG) met in March to discuss environmental issues associated with Glencore’s Clermont Open Cut Mine.

The Clermont GERG was formed in 2008 as a commitment from the Clermont Open Cut Mine Alternate Water Supply Agreement, and continues to operate under Glencore ownership.

GERG meetings are held quarterly and provide a formal link between the neighbouring landholders, the community and Glencore - Clermont Open Cut Mine for open and cooperative communication on all aspects of the Clermont Mine operation.

At the March meeting, the nominations of new and continuing community members, as well as the position of Independent Chair were confirmed for a two year term. Glencore updated the GERG on their Engineering Advance Control Enhancement which aims to reduce noise and improve fuel efficiency of the truck fleet.

Members received and reviewed reports on dust, noise, blast and groundwater monitoring, and provided advice on suitable locations for the new real time Dust and Noise Monitoring network now in operation.

Independent Chair Liz Alexander said that GERG members also monitor the frequency and resolution of complaints and were keen to hear from the community.

“If you have an issue or question that relates to Clermont Open Cut Mine environmental or ground water management, please contact a local GERG member,” she said.

Ms Alexander said “Glencore also provide a free-call Community Hotline to ensure Mine neighbours and the community can contact Clermont Open Cut at any time.”

Glencore’s Community Hotline is 1800 094 963.

The Hotline is answered by a call centre that, after taking details, sends an alert to nominated staff. Once alerted to a call, Glencore will contact the caller within 24 hours to discuss the issue.

Workout Of the Day (WOD)This is a board based program, working TO the principles of H.I.I.T where you can come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRITThis is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP Boxingis a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination.
