Isaac sends support to communities impacted by Tropical Cyclone Marcia

As Rockhampton Regional Council continues recovery efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Marcia, Isaac Regional Council is lending helping hands.

Isaac Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac staff were enthusiastic to lend their support and skills to help their neighbours.

“Around 20 Isaac staff with vehicles and equipment are being deployed to Rockhampton Regional Council over the next week to help with the cyclone cleanup efforts including removing debris from roads.”

“The workers, from our land care, road works and SES crews are keen to help the devastated region in its time of need.”

“Seven Isaac SES members, two vehicles and storm damage equipment are returned recently after spending five days helping the Capricorn coast with chain-sawing fallen trees, clearing debris and tarping roofs.”

“I thank our staff for their dedication and commitment, particularly our SES members who are all volunteers.”

Mayor Baker encouraged community and corporate members who wish to help our neighbours, to jump on the website www.givit.org.au and donate.

Australian charity GIVIT is a grassroots charity that connects those in need with those willing to give.

In addition to donated goods, Isaac residents can give money via the GIVIT website of which 100% is used to purchase essential items from local businesses.

GIVIT always, wherever possible, purchases items from local providers to support the local economy as it also recovers.

To pledge your donation or offer of assistance please visit www.givit.org.au.

CLERMONT & DISTRICT SERVICEMEN’S CLUB

Opening hours are 5.30pm to 6.30pm Wednesday and 5.30pm until late on Friday.

Come on down and join us on a Friday night for a quite drink and a chat. Our AGM will be held on Friday March 27 commencing at 7.30pm. All members welcome to attend.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime and Craft and Rhymetime

Clermont Library has plenty of room for more adults and children at Baby Bounce and Rhymetime sessions.

Rhymetime is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

The 2015 Clermont Rodeo is planned for Saturday 11 April at the Clermont Showgrounds. After rescheduling three times, to suit different committee members, the Annual General Meeting has not taken place. Unless a number of interested rodeo enthusiasts come forward by the 20th March, to assist with the running of this popular community event, it is possible that there will be NO CLERMONT RODEO IN 2015.

With the introduction of contract stock for rodeos and the services offered by rodeo associations and contractors, there is not as much preparation needed as there once was, but one member cannot do it all by himself. The facility available for this event is possibly the best in the area and it would be most disappointing if the event has to cancel.

Assistance is needed with the following:• Set up panels, tents and other preparation on

Friday 10 April• Assistance during the event• Clean-up and dismantle on Sunday 12 April

If you wish to ensure a 2015 Clermont Rodeo, please contact: Matt or Lana Doring on 0419 787 183 or [email protected] or CR&SS President, Les Flohr on 49 831 701 or [email protected]

Health Matters: Protect, Prevent; Live Well

International Women’s Day, held globally on March 8 each year, celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future

This year’s theme, ‘Make it happen’, encourages women to actively pursue their goals and aspirations, by developing:

• connections to support, services and mentors,• education and the confidence it instils, and• engagement and collaboration with other women

To celebrate this international day, here are the stories of two inspirational women in Australia whose ‘Make It Happen’ attitude made a difference for the health of many.

Mary McConnel (1824-1910). Originally from Scotland, Mary migrated to Australia with her husband in 1848 and settled near Moreton Bay.

She was the mother of six children. When she was in an adult hospital, she asked to bring her sick son in for treatment, but was told children under five years old could not be admitted. Without treatment, Mary’s son died.

She asked the Treasurer of Qld at that time for money to start a children’s hospital but was told it was a low priority.

Mary worked hard for 15 years and raised money and rented a little house in Spring Hill which became the Hospital for sick children in 1878. She brought a matron and nurse from England as there were no children’s nurses in Brisbane. In that first year 105 children were admitted to the tiny 15 bed hospital. This service eventually grew to become the Royal Children’s hospital, Brisbane, which services more than 37,000 children each year.

Sister Elizabeth Kenny (1880-1952). Elizabeth was a Darling Downs community member who began her nursing career by volunteering her services to anyone who called her, riding her horse to visit patients.

She then served as a nurse in World War 1. After returning home to Australia, she worked with a Toowoomba surgeon to treat cases of polio with hot baths and limb movement, instead of the immobilisation methods used by doctors at the time. Many patients recovered.

Sister Kenny received support from Qld government to establish clinics to treat long term polio cases in Townsville and Brisbane, which attracted interstate and overseas patients. However many Australian doctors did not believe her therapies worked.

In 1937, a polio epidemic struck Australia and Elizabeth published a book about her treatments. In 1940, Elizabeth was invited to the US where she started a training school for therapists.

A wave of polio outbreaks hit America during the war years. In 1946 Minneapolis suffered its worse polio epidemic and more than 2000 people died. Elizabeth’s ideas were

recognised as the best treatment during those years and was said to have saved the country from a national disaster.

In support of local women and to build on the Make it Happen theme, the Clermont business group is having a luncheon today Friday March 6.

Times may have changed since our pioneering and resilient forbearers fought for positive health, but the connections, confidence and engagement of current women remains as powerful, especially when it comes to being proactive about our health and the health of those around us.

And remember…. Protect, Prevent, Live Well

Class DescriptionGut and Butt blastis a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD)This is a board based program, working along the principles of H.I.I.T where you are able to come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of

exercise followed by active recovery

periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRITThis is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP BoxingIs a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.
