Special Anzac honour with Memorial upgrades and programs

CLERMONT RAGThe

Two major Anzac Memorial upgrades in Moranbah and Clermont are part of a suite of special projects underway by Isaac Regional Council for the Anzac Centenary.

Mayor Anne Baker said the Anzac Centenary would honour all those who served and died for us, for our nation and for peace.

“This year marks a significant anniversary for all Australians, and many people will be touched in different ways.

“The memorial upgrades will be finished in time for Anzac Day where we will be honouring our fallen countrymen and women throughout the region with dawn and morning services,” she said.

For service times and locations visit the Isaac Regional Council website.

Starting last week, works to the Moranbah Anzac Memorial are set to deliver significant improvements.

Local Moranbah Councillor Peter Freeleagus said the upgrade to was important and would have a lasting meaning for the community.

“The sacrifice of the Anzacs holds a special place in our community,” he said.

“The works reflect the importance we place on this, particularly with this year marking the centenary of World War One.”

“We expect hundreds to join us for this year’s services so the upgrade is very timely,” Cr Freeleagus said.

Improvements to the Moranbah Anzac Memorial will create more standing room around the Memorial, more concrete flooring and seating and with the cenotaph to be positioned on a raised platform.

Local Clermont Councillor Barbara Stranks said the community was heartened to see improvements to the Clermont Anzac Memorial.

“The Anzac Memorial has undergone four weeks of refurbishments including levelling the grounds and installing seven new memorial pillars and plaques, in special honour of the Anzac Centenary,” she said.

Clermont RSL Sub branch President David Ward said veterans and their families were particularly honoured to see these improvements.

“On behalf of Clermont RSL sub branch, I’d like to say thank you, this means a lot to all of us,” said Mr Ward.

“The community has embraced the Anzac spirit for this the 100th year of the landing at Gallipoli and commemorating the courage and sacrifice that so many made for this great Nation,” he said.

The community is invited to get involved in a number of commemorative Anzac Centenary projects being held throughout the region.

• The Clermont Historical Centre is now showing the Anzac Heroes and Heroines Exhibition, showcasing local digger’s stories including the

infamous sniper William ‘Billy’ Sing from Clermont, as well as wartime relics.

• Isaac Libraries are inviting the community take part in their 500 poppies project or borrow a special Anzac Book Title and see the travelling exhibition, Wartime Romances.

• Local photographer in Carmila, Laurie-Anne King, will be displaying her finished photographic exhibition and book ‘Their Name Liveth Evermore’ capturing the rich military service history of the people of Carmila and surrounds, on Anzac Day in Carmila Hall, proudly supported by an Regional Arts Development Fund grant.

Nationally renowned milliner to bring Melbourne flare to local headwear

“Davitt and his wife Jennifer will be taking photos of local identities which will capture life in Nebo, to be published as photo book.”

Class DescriptionGut and Butt Blastis a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim

and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD)This is a board based program, working along the principles of H.I.I.T where you are able to come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRITThis is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP Boxingis a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.

Health Matters

National Youth Week 10-19 AprilNational Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people in Australia. Part of their celebrations includes contributions from young people who share their stories and obstacles and how they overcame them. This is the story of 2014 Heywire winner, Trent Caldwell.

Me: What it really means to be tough

As a teenager, I lived in a tough neighbourhood in the northern suburbs of Perth.

I saw fights, drugs, and gangs fill the streets.

I got caught up in it, and was addicted to the danger.

I thought living like this made me tough.

But my life turned on Good Friday 2012.

I was 19 and down the park with my mates.

I decided it would be a good idea to do chin-ups on a soccer crossbar.

It wasn’t bolted in properly.

The goal post crushed my head, and instantly put me into a coma.

My skull fractured in several places and I lost sight in one eye.

And when I woke up, the accident had brought on a shopping list of mental illnesses - epilepsy, ADHD, PTSD, anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

I started to self harm and needed medication and regular admissions to mental hospitals to keep me sane.

I couldn’t work, so chose to move to Broome to live with my mum.

It took months but the relaxed lifestyle of the Kimberley started to help me .got well enough to get work.

I loved my new job and my new community, but depression still made the smallest issue feel like the end of the world.

And I would sink back into depressive habits.

I needed help, not just medication.

I needed to talk to someone.

I decided to visit a Headspace youth health centre, even though I was pretty sure they wouldn’t be able to understand.

After all, even I couldn’t find the words to explain what was going on in my head.

But as I talked I found myself saying things I had never even considered before.

It was like my brain was saying things that I had no control over.

I started attending a church, and was able to slowly ease off my medications.

The best part was knowing that I was actually healing.

It’s now coming up to three years since the accident and I’ve become a youth mental health advocate here in Broome.

I guess I have also learned a lot about what it really means to be tough.

It isn’t about how many dangerous situations you put yourself in.

It’s about fighting through the trials life throws at you.

It’s not about acting like you’re invincible; it’s about being brave enough to ask for help when you need it.

If you ever need someone to talk to, remember that headspace.org.au, Lifeline 13 11 14, Kids Help Line 1800 55 1800, Reachout au.reachout.com and BeyondBlue beyondblue.org.au are all good places to start.

And remember…. Protect, Prevent, Live Well

In memory of Edgar Harvey1934 - 2009

Gone is the face we loved so dear.Silent is the voice we loved to hear.

To far away for sight or speech,But not too far for thought to reach.

Sweet to remember you who once was hereAnd who, though is absent, is just a dear.

Sadly missed by your wife Shirley and daughters and their families.
