Youth get on board with skateboarding clinics Young skating fanatics put on their best Tony Hawk impressions at skateboarding clinics held across the region last week.

The free clinics were made possible thanks to a partnership between Isaac Regional Council and the Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative.

The clinics took place at Council’s skate parks in Glenden, Nebo, Moranbah, Clermont, Dysart and Middlemount.

Accredited Coach Clinten Davison said youth learnt basic board skills to more complex tricks.

“Skateboarders of all ages and skills took part in the free sessions,” he said.

“It’s great to see the region has such a strong skateboarding scene.”

“The clinics also encouraged people to be active while enjoying a great day out with friends.”

Isaac... helping to energise the world

In an Isaac-first initiative, Council is driving a region-wide State Emergency Services (SES) recruitment campaign, calling on residents to ‘Be Extraordinary’. Launching July 10 with a television commercial featuring Isaac SES members, Council is hoping to boost the number of ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’ across the Isaac. The goal is to grow the membership base of this vital volunteer organisation from 105 to 150 members as the Isaac SES desperately needs people who are willing to help their communities in times of emergency and disaster. No matter who you are or what you do, there’s an SES task to suit everyone. If you’ve got what it takes to ‘Be Extraordinary’, or to simply find out more please give Local SES Controller Alex McPhee a call on 0412 880 577.

Well hello once again from the beachside of Clermont from the metropolis of Moranbah. I know, still here but glad to be heading back next week to resume duties in Clermont. I am led to believe that Sharon has done a great job in my absence but I should see everyone come Friday night. If there is one thing you appreciate when away from your home, it is your home. Clermont has not experienced any crime waves while I have been gone. Traffic enforcement however has been quite high with the troops delivering outstanding traffic figures comparable to full time traffic branch units. Interesting intercepts during the week included a male person on his fourth disqualified driving charge, so his car was towed and he will be facing the Magistrate with the possibility of his car being forfeited to the state. On top of this some pretty high speeds being detected. Remember traffic tickets are voluntary, you volunteer to break the law and you will receive a ticket, it is that simple. Continuing reports in the paper concerning police use of force at various incidents that we as keepers of the peace have to attend to. Police officers continue to have a situational use of force model to refer to when dealing with situations and the most appropriate use of force is normally selected.

The wrong use of force is also sometimes selected but this is normally determined by a panel at length with plenty of time to consider the options. Split second decisions sometime result in injury to members of the public and more often unnecessary injuries to police. The community usually forgets this part, when police are injured in the line of duty because sometimes they don’t want to cause injury to their would be assailant, they end up paying the price. Before making uninformed comments about these issues seek clarification other than through facebook, the media or general gossip mungers. Anyway that’s it for now. Remember to lock up your vehicles. Over here Moranbah residents are copping it with thefts from vehicles, theft of vehicles and general stealing from their homes. We do not need Clermont getting like that. Remember to keep ringing the station prior to coming down to see if someone can help you out. Until next time Sarge

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

On the Shelf

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime

Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families.

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions and these are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.

Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

Bookings are essential please phone 4983 4746 or email [email protected] gov.au

Lloyd Hornsby workshops

As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, indigenous artist Lloyd Hornsby will be holding art workshops at Isaac Libraries and the Clermont Historical Centre.

A free leaf/bark painting workshop for adults will be held at the Clermont Historical Centre on Wednesday, 13 July from 10am to 11am.

A Master Class workshop for adults will be held at the Clermont Historical Centre on Saturday, 23 July from 10am to 12pm and will cost $20 per participant.

Both workshops will be limited to 15 participants and payment must be made at time of booking.

History books for sale

The Clermont Library has some history books relating to the Isaac Region, for sale.

If you have an interest in local history, these books would be great to add to your book collection or make a nice gift for someone who likes reading books on ‘Australiana’.

The books for sale are: ‘Below These Mountains’ by Lyall Ford ($15), ‘Behold Nebo: A History of Nebo Shire’ by George A. Mayes ($20) and ‘A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland’ by Lyall Ford ($20).

Both books by Lyall Ford relate to his great grandfather - pioneer photographer and miner, John Henry Mills, who lived in Mount Britton.

Fossicking licence clarification

Recently the Library has had a lot of enquiries around purchasing fossicking licences.

We would like to let the community know that the Clermont Library does not sell fossicking licences.

In Clermont, fossicking licences can be purchased online through the Queensland Government website at www.qld.gov.au/recreation/activities/fossicking/licences-permits/purchases/ or in store at the Clermont Caravan Park, Haig Street.

People can purchase internet time on the library’s public computers to buy a fossicking licence online.

To purchase a fossicking licence, you must have your own email address and either a Visa or Mastercard credit/debit card. The fossicking licence is emailed to you.

Library staff are happy to guide people through the process of purchasing fossicking licences online.

New arrivals Recent arrivals in adult fiction includes the following:

Souvenir by Therese Fowler Until We Meet Again by Margaret Thornton Keep the Home Fires Burning by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles Family Betrayal by Kitty Neale

First Five Forever

The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.

Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.

The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.

The Clermont Library children’s sessions are:

• Rhymetime and Craft (for children aged 0-5 years), held Tuesdays, 9.30am -10am

• Babybounce (0-2 years), held Thursdays, 9.30am – 10am

• Storytime and Craft, held Fridays, 9.30am – 10.30am

Library program/event bookings

Bookings for all library programs are essential. To book call the Clermont Library on 4846 3746.

Until next time, see you at the Library. Sue and Laura
