Dynamic duo awarded Isaac Citizen of the Year

A dynamic husband and wife duo of 36 years have accepted the Isaac region’s top community award, the Isaac 2016 Citizen of the Year.

John and Jan Burnett of Bendemeer Station, Clermont, accepted the award together at Australia Day celebrations among family and friends.

“As a team, they are outstanding recipients for this year’s flagship award,” said Mayor Anne Baker.

“They continue to contribute to the region’s vibrant Clermont community through numerous committees and fundraising efforts.”

“They are strong advocates and spokespeople for the cattle and beef industry and philanthropic business owners.”

“Over the years John and Jan Burnett have played an enormous part in building Clermont and the region’s communities and industry,” said Mayor Baker.

Jack Lonergan of Middlemount has been named 2016 Young Citizen of the Year for his exceptional leadership qualities and sportsmanship.

“Jack is a true sportsman on and off the field,” said local Councillor Jane Pickels.

“He excels in Rugby League and Volleyball, but takes time out to help and encourage younger and disabled students at school.”

“As school captain at Middlemount Community School, we are proud of his maturity and strength of character, and we wish him a successful year ahead,” Cr Pickels said.

Community Event of the Year has been awarded to a colourful affair, the 2015 Multicultural Food and Arts Festival hosted by Moranbah Arts.

The event attracted over 2,000 visitors over three days to enjoy food, workshops, displays, music, tours and dance.

“I congratulate all Australia Day nominees and award winners and I thank you all for your outstanding contribution to our communities. I continue to be inspired each year by the quiet achievers around me,” said Mayor Baker.

Federal funding helps bridge the gap on Isaacs roads

Isaac communities and road users will reap the benefits of $2.75 million in federal funding from Round Two of the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme (BRP), announced Monday January 18.

Moranbah’s Cherwell Creek Bridge Renewal project secured the maximum funding allocation of 50 per cent of the total project cost and received the highest funding allocation in Queensland during Round Two.

Isaac Regional Council CEO Rod Ferguson said the funding was a major win for both Isaac road users and the region’s productivity.

“This funding is a significant boost to the Cherwell Creek Bridge Renewal Project, which involves replacement of the existing narrow, low level bridge,” he said.

“The upgrade will deliver a wider, safer, more resilient bridge with significantly increased flood immunity and load capacity.

“The $5.5 million project will greatly improve road freight efficiency including an increased speed limit back to 100km/h, and deliver long term benefits for local road users including safer driving conditions.

“Round Two of the BRP was open to local governments, with up to $100 million in funding available and 164 bridges benefiting from the round.

“This project was selected as part of a competitive, merit based process and we are appreciative to have received the maximum 50 per cent funding,” Mr Ferguson said.

The Australian Government has identified local bridge upgrades and repairs as a national priority and have committed $300 million in funding over five years from 2014–15.

The objectives of the BRP are to contribute to the productivity of bridges serving local communities, and facilitate higher productivity vehicle access by improving the state’s road network.

For further information please contact Isaac Regional Council on 1300 ISAACS (472 227) or visit www.investment.infrastructure.gov.au/funding/bridgesrenewal

Fuzzbook contributed by Sarge

Well another week gone in this ridiculous heat. That’s pretty much anybody is talking about. The most heard words around the streets and farms I suppose is “hot enough for you?” with most people agreeing with one another. Astounding that in New York today record snowfalls have housebound millions of people. I am more than certain we will never have that issue here!

What’s happening on the crime front? Little things are starting to happen around the town and farms of the area. Suspicious vehicles are being seen by residents in the back streets idling for long periods of time. Good to see this is being reported to police with the vehicles owners spoken to. At this time nothing nefarious has been detected but people please keep vigilant and keep that information flowing to police. It is especially important not to just throw it on facebook (as we do not have access). If a crime is committed report it either to the station or 131 444.

While I pen this we are heading into the back to school week and Australia Day celebrations. I hope that everything is going

to go well and I sure will tell everybody if it does not. I believe the pool idea is going to be excellent especially with the heat.

Talking about heat there have been recent instances of vehicles left running with small children in them while Mum or Dad duck in to grab a few things at the shops. I understand parents want to keep their children cool and its a hassle to get them out and back in again to the car, but please do it. There has been real tragedies in the news about toddlers left in vehicles especially ones that turn the car off, play with the controls and then suffocate when the vehicle interior reaches very high stifling temperatures. There of course is a fine for leaving the car running but no fine could redeem a parent that loses a child or an owner who loses a pet.

Anyway keep the good work up as a town. Hopefully some rain will be on the horizon for everyone. Traffic behaviour has been okay, but could be better especially some Harley Davidson mid life crisis riders in town. An eye will be kept out!

The Sarge.
