The class will introduce the new AutoCAD Civil 3D Geotechnical extension to dislay and !odel
su"sur#ace data #or in#rastructure design wor$. This class will show how "orehole data can "e i!orted
and used within AutoCAD Civil 3D so#tware to greatly increase roductivity #or geotechnical engineers.
Users will "e a"le to lot hole locations% create 3D stic$s !odeling strata data at hole locations% and
!odel strata to and "ase sur#aces using geotechnical styling and hatching. The class will also see how
the extension is used to &uic$ly !aniulate a strata sur#ace "y seci#ying what hole data should or should
not "e included and how to raidly create geotechnical sections and auto!atically create "orehole logs
'stris( on the ro#ile view.

What is the new Geotechnical extension?
The new Geotechnical extension #or AutoCAD Civil 3D 0193% has "een !ade to ease the tas$ o#creating and viewing geological and su" sur#ace in#or!ation.
Geotechnical design is li$e any other engineering ractice% the designs need to "e revised and
re#ined. n !any resects this is !ore the case with geotechnics as the engineer with li!ited
in#or!ation tries to interret the data to "est #it the site. n this resect the tool has "een
designed to &uic$ly dislay data in AutoCAD to allow the user to start !odelling and interreting
the site.
The Geotechnical extension is designed to wor$ with hole locations and geology data% the

4xectations should "e set at the right level% the tool will not interret the geotechnical data% it
does not analyse or redict soil strengths% secialist tools are needed #or that% nor does it create
er#ect geological !odels. owever it is a great starting oint #or the !odelling and
visualisation rocess.
The geotechnical extension is still under develo!ent so so!e o# the notes in this handout still
need to "e #inalised at the ti!e o# writing. hoe to include the in#or!ation in this class and add
!ore in the hel and online tutorials o# the roduct% and o# course you can always contact !e.

-ress Importto validate and i!ort the #iles
The #iles are validated and i# all is o$ay the data will "e i!orted. At the end o# the i!ort the
dislay will "e Boo!ed to the extents o# the new data. ?ou will see the hole locations together
with the stris dislayed on lan. Changing the view to 3D will dislay cylinders reresenting
the di##erent strata in the "orehole.

with the sa!e na!e it will "e used. The sa!e !aterials are also used #or strata sur#aces and
ro#ile hatches.
&orehole 'anager
The "orehole !anager is used to de#ine which "oreholes are dislayed and how. *or each
"orehole you can de#ine i# it is dislayed in lan% with or without a log% and in the !odel. ?ou
can change the dislay style #or the holes as well.
The +orehole Manager dislays all "oreholes #ro! the i!ort in a grid with each row
reresenting a "orehole.
The grid can "e sorted "y clic$ing on the header o# any colu!n.
Plan, Strip, Model:Turn the dislay o# the ele!ents o## and on

Style) Changes the dislay style o# the "orehole.

Include) The Include exclude chec$ is used to revent the hole data "eing used in any
sur#ace created. Toggled on the hole will "e used% o## it will not "e used. This !ay "e re&uired
#or holes when the data is not relia"le.
Strata 'anager
The strata !anager is used to create and dislay strata sur#aces. The sur#aces created are
standard Civil 3D sur#aces% they can "e edited and !aniulated using Civil 3D co!!ands and
are dislayed in the tool rosector li$e any other sur#ace.
The !anager is designed to !a$e it #ast and easy to switch "etween strata sur#aces% the dislay
o# each sur#ace can "e chec$ed on or o##% there is no need to change the dislay style to hide
the sur#ace.
The grid lists all strata in the i!orted data and gives so!e su!!ary in#or!ation #or the strata.
The grid can "e sorted "y clic$ing on the header o# any colu!n.
Display Top, Display Base) The chec$ "oxes are used to raidly show and hide individual
sur#aces% the sur#aces will "e created i# they do not already exist.
Locations) The locations "utton will dislay a list o# all the holes used in to creating the
sur#ace% individual holes can "e chec$ed on and o## so their data is not used in creating the
sur#ace.
Vertical eaggeration)This is used to seci#y the a!ount o# vertical scale% "y changing
the exaggeration the "oreholes% stris and sur#aces will all have their vertical scale changed.
Band !y) The "anding otion is used to seci#y the data to "e used to create the sur#aces.
Changing the "anding will not a##ect current sur#aces "ut will allow new sur#aces to "e created.

+y dou"le clic$ing on a stratu! record the "orehole o# strata list will "e dislayed. This lists all
the "oreholes used in the creation o# the seci#ied strata% the strata can "e tuned "y including or
excluding certain hole data.
Include: The nclude exclude chec$ is used to revent the hole data "eing used in thesur#ace. Toggled on the hole will "e used% o## it will not "e used.
S"o# $on%Strata Bore"oles:As de#ault Boreholes or stratawill only show the holes
used in the strata sur#ace% holes with no data #or the current strata will not "e dislayed% "y
chec$ing on this otion the other holes will "e listed% this is a good way o# seeing any ano!alies
in the data.

The ai! o# the geotechnical extension is to &uic$ly see and understand the site% creatingdyna!ic ro#iles o# the geology strata and "eing a"le to see logs ro2ected on to the ro#ile view

Create ro#ile wor$s in the sa!e way as the standard Civil 3D ro#iles% however they have the
extra a"ility to ro2ect the re&uired "oreholes on to the ro#ile view and auto!atically the strata
areas.
The co!!and uses a wiBard to create a new ro#ile and align!ent i# necessary.
Bore"ole selection) -rovides three !ethods to select "oreholes to dislay on the ro#ile.
Bu&er) A distance is seci#ied to #ind all "oreholes within the distance #ro! the align!ent
Bore"oles By Type) *ro! the ull down list select the hole tye to use
Manual) The user can select the individual "oreholes
Strata selection) ,elect the strata sur#aces to "e dislayed in the ro#ile and whether to
hatch strata areas.

n a large site investigation "oreholes are o#ten clustered in areas% when loo$ing at sur#aces #or
the whole area you !ay #ind a lot o# !eaningless triangulation #or areas where no data is
availa"le. The sa!e ro"le! can also "e seen on s!aller sites where you have oc$ets o#strata or outcros. 6e need a !ethod to divide the site into aroriate areas. This can "e
done "y using "oundaries.
,ur#ace "oundaries can "e used to create Bones "ut one !a2or li!itation is you can only have
one outer "oundary% however there is a !ethod to su" divide the site.
9. Create a sur#ace as nor!al
0. ,elect a sur#ace and add a "oundary% set tye to hideand chec$ on non/destructive
"rea$line% -ress K. 6hen ro!ted select o"2ects or sur#ace% choice sur#ace and
select the sur#ace "eing wor$ed on. The sur#ace will disaear.
3. ;ow draw olylines around the areas to "e shown.
=. Again select the sur#ace and ic$ add "oundary set tye to showand chec$ on non/
destructive "rea$line% -ress K.

generated% including reorts% logs and cross sections.
!onnecting the Geotechnical /xtension to -ole&AS/ S#
As well as i!orting data the extension can also connect and access data directly #ro! a central
data"ase% ole+A,4 ,i. This starts to "ring the advantages o# +M% changes can "e !ade in
the central data"ase and the udates are shared with all. This !eans the Civil 3D extension will
have access to the latest geotechnical data% this will hel reduce errors and !ista$es #ro!
i!orting the wrong #ile.
The tool will also have an otion to chec$ the data"ase #or udates% i# #ound these can "e
!erged with the strata sur#aces already in the drawing.
