Aug 1st Chapter MeetingThe August Chapter meeting will
be on Tuesday Aug 1st at the Farmers Branch Library, located on the northwest corner of Webb Chapel and Golfing Green Dr. The meeting will be held in the auditorium and begin at 6:30 p.m. with socializing and coffee. The program will begin promptly at 7 p.m. and finish by 9:00 p.m.
The August meeting will be our traditional recap of Airventure, complete with photos and videos. We have photos from several members who were there, as well as impressions from Oshkosh expert Marvin Brott.
This is the most fun meeting of the year, so be sure to attend.

YOUNG EAGLES The June YE event was a success. Thanks to all who helped.
TREASURER REPORTSam discussed the Treasurer’s Report for June. There were 2 new members and 3 membership renewals. We have 74 paid members. Sam reviewed the 2017 budget. The board also discussed placing the join/renewal form online along with the PayPal link.
OLD BUSINESS• The tensiometer has been purchased.• Discussed Rich Graham’s offer of raffle tickets for a
session with the SR-71 simulator at Frontiers of Flight. Ann moved that 100 tickets be sold at $10.00/ea, the deadline would be December 1 with the drawing held at the Christmas Party and funds would be used to buy precision tools for use by chapter members. Norm seconded. The motion passed unanimously with 8 votes in favor. Norm will research acquisition of the physical tickets for sale.
NEW BUSINESS• Jim Canniff will contact Outback Steakhouse to check
availability for the Christmas Party on Tuesday December 5. He will try to get Monday the 4th if the 5th isn’t available.
First, I have some sad news to report. Long time member and big supporter of Chapter 168, Vivian Bruce passed away on July 22. Wife of Owen Bruce, Vivian was well loved by her Chapter 168 Family.
My feet are recovering from the week spent at Airventure. I estimate that I walk about 5 miles per day at the convention. This year I used my Garmin Watch to count my steps and measure some distances. I reached my step goal twice each day.
As much fun as Oshkosh is every year, it is nice to be back in Dallas.
The month of August, although the hottest month of the year, is were we look to the fall which is just around the corner. I plan to catch up on projects and get prepared to make a hard push on my RV-8 when the temperatures are more forgiving in the hangar. I am trying to get it finished before the end of the year.
This issue will focus on airventure, and we will get back to normal in next month’s issue.
This was a unique year. There was so much happening, there was not enough time to see it all. Luckily, the EAA website (eaa.org) has plenty of pictures, videos and stories to fill me in on what I missed, and I did miss some good stuff.
I really appreciated the work done on Cessna 172 serial number one. Dennis Osment, the current owner/caretaker went over the top in restoring it to original condition. He duplicated the picture that was on the Cessna sales brochure down to the smallest detail. He had the original radio replicated with working knobs and dials.
Actually it is a faceplate that covers the trays that hold the radios he flies with (radios removed when displayed). An old headset hangs in the same location as in the brochure. The same exact luggage as displayed in the brochure sits on the rear shelf.
The original skins were expertly polished, and the original color duplicated.
Dennis’ efforts were rewarded with the Grand Champion - Gold Lindy in the Vintage Contemporary Category for his1955 Cessna 172 N5000A
That is only one of the many things that are amazing at Airventure.
This year I did something different to get to Oshkosh. Southwest Airlines transported me to the show. Our trio flew into Milwaukee and drove the rest. There was no dodging of storms at low altitudes this year. There is no adventure in that, which is exactly the point.
If you have been more than once, you know that much is the same every year. Some vendors have deep roots in the usual spots and built permanent structures there. Others, like Garmin have expanded over the years. Although most of the show is the same, Marvin reminds me that, “There is always something there that you have not seen before.”
My impressions. The number of airplanes is growing. Homebuilt camping area is expanding. This year it displaced the vendor car parking that is south where homebuilt camping was last year. The “south forty” had about three more rows added, putting it in the acreage that used to be a corn field south of the runway. This made parking a car further away. Several new lots were created to accommodate the number of daily vehicles.
Pilots like message chairs. There were some on sale in every vendor building, along with other non-aviation trappings like jewelry, sunglasses, knives and ladders. It is interesting how the retail part of the show has moved away from the pilot, owner and builder. The main buildings have fewer number of vendors and those that are there have larger spaces, making the buildings feel more empty. Some of those vendors who had spaces in the building have moved outside into bigger spaces outside. Garmin is one of those who maintain two large tents outside. The internet is a major player in this change. Everything at the show can be found and purchased online. At some point the marketing advantage gained by paying for a spot is outweighed by an online store. But it is still fun to window shop, and you can get your questions answered by a factory rep.
Air venture not only attracts pilots, but a large number of aviation enthusiasts and the airshow consumers. That is a major focus of the event. The afternoon airshow and now the night
airshows are the biggest and best in the business. The number of people who pay to see them is huge a testament to how well they are done.
EAA has added several new structures that make that camping more enjoyable. Two new pavilions were added. One in Homebuilt area and one in the Vintage area. During the show campers can come together for some food and fellowship. It is also a great place to escape an evening rain, which happens.
The number of Vans aircraft is growing. Much of the new camping area was filled with more RVs than ever. Too many to see them all. There is a good chance you will miss a well built plane because it is buried by the number of other aircraft.
When your feet hurt from all the walking, forums are a great place to spend some time. Instead of looking for specific topics, I usually pick one at random. They are all interesting. The number of forums this year were staggering. The number of venues have increased. For example, Garmin had it two tents in their retail area to do forums in that relate to their products. Other vendors did the same. When looking in the program it was hard sometime to find where the forum was located.
There is too much Airventure to be able to see it all. But the EAA website and all the news publications fill in the gaps. I have spent the last few days after returning catching up on all the things I missed.
Airventure is a big pilot party. A place where all of us with the aviation affliction can get together and commiserate. A place to see how we all cope with the aviation condition. Some like fast, some like slow. Some fly big stuff and some fly small. Some spend big bucks and some get by spending very little. One thing for sure is that it is all good. Oshkosh is a home for those “Born to Fly”.

This year at airventure we had more of the same topics that were important the last few years.
Basic Med was still in the forefront. Last year we didn’t know what it would be. This year we talked about how it was being implemented. Most people felt it was working well. This year’s Medical forums focused on that.
Another returning topic was ADS-B. Each year produces more solutions. Each one better than the last. New products on the market include Garmin’s new GDL-82, which is literally spliced into you transponder’s coax antennae cable. It can “sniff” your transponder’s squawk code and broadcast on the same antennae. The product is affordable and a simpler install than other solutions. The “Beacon” from iLevil, which was announced at Sun-n-Fun, was on sale in their booth. Those at the show were given preference over those who ordered on the internet. The Beacon is a blade antennae with built in electronic circuitry that needs only a GPS antennae to function. Those are ADS-B Out solutions. In the Foreflight booth a very compact ADS-B In product was on sale. Made by Foreflight, it is called the Scout, and is a
dual band ADS-B In receiver in a size that fits in your shirt pocket. About the size of a pack of gum, it can stick to your canopy and connect via Bluetooth to your tablet running
Foreflight to display traffic and weather. It does not have an internal battery, but it uses an external USB powered battery or 5V USB ship’s power.Drones (remotely piloted vehicles) were also a major topic. A whole building in the Innovation area was devoted to small aircraft. The category is growing so fast the FAA can’t
regulate it fast enough. The rules the
govern drone flying is constantly changing. Commercial operators are now treated differently than the hobby flyer. One thing for sure is that they are getting very sophisticated and the capability is remarkable. Also, I noticed that there is more adults interested in the capability than the younger flyer.
Speaking of drones, Uber Elevate is the name of Uber’s venture into the autonomous flying passenger quad copter.
Also, the Amazon package delivering drone was on display.

This year was the year for bombers. Both B-29s, FiFi and Doc flew in. The B-52 was already there days earlier. Fifteen B-25 were there with an cool bombing re-enactment during one of the airshows. the B-1 did some flying demonstrations along with a “how to leak jet fuel” demo. The A-20 Havoc had a crowd all week.
But there was also a bunch of other cool things.

I always spend some of my OSH time in the Cleavand Tool booth. Last year they had Avery Tool’s left over inventory on sale. Usually there is a new tool that I have not seen before, This year I found a simple tool that helps hold hardware that fits in those awkward spaces. If you have every tried to snake a nut into a tiny gap while you try to get the bolt started, than this tool might be for you. I used to put tape on a wrench to help hold a nut in place, but the nut usually fell out once it touched the bolt. This tool is a simple clamp that uses a treaded rod and nut near the handle to tighten the clamp on the opposite end. Once tightened that nut is not coming out until the clamp is loosened. It would work for bolts, cotter pins, spring hose clamps and those nasty adel clamps as well. If it could hold the washer and nut at the same time it would be a most popular tool in my toolbox. At less than $20 it is a must have tool for me. It is called the Handee Clamp and info can be found at handeeclamp.com . Aircraft Spruce has them as well as ATS.
There is an area in Gateway Park that promotes innovations. I saw some cool stuff and had an interesting conversation with a few controllers that are working on the NexGen traffic control system.

The Flights of Our Fathers Air Show Fly-In, benefiting the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum, will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017. The annual event draws thousands of aviation enthusiasts, local and regional residents to enjoy a full day of events and attractions. There are activities and events for all ages, ranging from a kid's zone to static displays of military, vintage and new aircraft. We have several performers lined up, including Randy Ball of FighterJets Inc. in his Check Six MiG-17F, a P-51 Mustang Pecos Bill, an A-26 Lady Liberty and more. Car and motorcycle shows, flyovers of vintage and modern aircraft and guest speakers, including Sir Winston Churchill's great-grandson, Jonathan Sandys, will complete a full day of activities.
