Hanover Area PROBUS

Club Established September, 2014 www.hapc.ca March, 2019

The first year of the provost golf club was a huge success. It was a sketchy start in May with many cancellations due to soggy conditions. But by June and July we were golfing regularly. A different course each week, whenever we could arrange a good deal! Courses played included Black Horse, Highland Glen, Pike Lake, Northern Dunes and Saugeen. In August we began to replay course favourites. Although our group size varied from 4 to 18, good time was always guaranteed. We plan to play throughout September and into October if weather permits. It was a fantastic season! Consider joining us next year.

Our March speaker - John Lieber, Toronto Parkland Strategy

He works for the City of Toronto, and holds a certificate in Urban Forestry, and a diploma in Ecosystem Management. John has written 2 editorials - one for Greenroof.com and the other for Revelator which is an online news and ideas initiative of the Centre for Biological Diversity. Our February meeting speaker - April Marshall

Filling in for John was April Marshall, Hanover's manager of Economic Development. Kudos to our Committee who had lined up April (and others) to fill in, in case of an emergency when a speaker can't come. On very short notice, April was well prepared with lots of photos to illustrate the many industrial and business projects presently under construction in Hanover. Even though some of these have been completed already, they were a surprise to many of us who had not recently taken a drive through our ever-growing Industrial Park in Hanover. They include:

The new Biosolid Storage Tank (located at the north end of town on 7th Avenue), part of Hanover's water and filtration system.

The new Wightman Call Centre

Fidler Moving and Storage offices

The new attractive Veterinary Hospital

The new John Diefenbaker Senior School

The expanded and renovated Hanover Mall where the second Tim Horton's is being built

The long awaited completion of the Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Centre

Plans for the proposed LTC Centre (Long Term Care Centre) located close to the Hanover Hospital. April pointed out, during our question and answer period, that there is a serious shortage of workers to bring these structures to completion. This has been evident particularly in the construction of the new Senior School, projected to be open for this September. New residential sites are necessary to house a growing population in Hanover - five such developments are under way. Hanover is undergoing a major building boom and less expensive housing is also needed for young families. April ably fielded many questions. Hanover is hopeful of continuing good relations with our neighbours, Brockton and West Grey. All three communities have been meeting together to facilitate future expansion and development around Hanover's perimeter.

Many of our members were storm stayed or didn't venture out in the wintry conditions but around 50 members did come out. As our chairperson Lorna Eadie Hocking had just flown home the previous day, Joel Coté ably chaired the meeting, beginning with the introduction of our 5 new members: Charles Ashbury, Judy Broughton, Sharon Broughton, Anne Grant, and Francis-Joseph Gross. This brings our total membership this year to 236.

Joel brought us up to date on projects under way with the Management Committee. The portable sound system has been purchased and will be available for groups wishing to communicate better with fellow members while out hiking or possibly at the Travel Group meetings which are well attended and numerous. A method of booking and managing this system will soon be announced. The town of Hanover is going to cooperate with the PROBUS club in the purchase of a new and larger screen for use in the Lion’s Den so that pictures need not be projected on the cement block wall. On the topic of hospitality, much thanks go to Karen Farrow and Helen Peppler for preparing special Valentine’s Day treats - gourmet lemon meringue tidbits (below left) to accompany the coffee, drinks and other goodies. Joel explained that there would be two winners of the You Share, We Share draw: Ruth Linnen and Bernice Frook (below right).

monthly meetings

We need you, our members, to volunteer for these positions and/or nominate your friends.

Group Activities

At the meeting Susan Leidel brought us up to date on the numerous activities of our activity groups, noting that in view of the blizzards and hazardous driving conditions, even the cross-country skiing club was having difficulty getting together. Check your activity calendar on our web site, www.hapc.ca for upcoming activities, times, and places.

There are a number of activity groups that currently do not have coordinators – they include Snow Shoeing and Pole Walking. Please consider stepping up to be a co-ordinator for these activities.

Welcome two new Coordinators: Board Games – Peter Dalton and Cross Country Skiing - Diane Mather

TAP (Technical Aspects and Principles) Photography – This group is taking a little winter hiatus and will meet again the end of March.

Scrabble Group - was hosted at the home of Barb Smith in Mildmay on February 14. The group meets every other Thursday. To add to the festivity of our matching wits with each other over riveting words, two of the ladies provided us with chocolates, fancy muffins, nuts and pretzels along with coffee and tea. Picture below right are: Barbara Hunsberger, Leona Hutton and Lois Todd. Below left are: Barb Smith , Mike Taylor, Ruth Linnen and Liz Pybus. The outstanding play of the games was the very last play; Lois used all her letters to create the word "riveted" for a score of 74. Way to go Lois!

Anyone interested in a Plant Based Foodie Probus Group?

Joan Roseborough would be interested in starting a “Plant Based Foodie Probus Group”. Here are her thoughts for this activity group, which would meet at lunch time say once a month. · Group members would introduce one plant based dish, this could be; a smoothie, a snack, a side dish, an appetizer, a soup, a salad, cookies/bars/dessert. NOT A MAIN ENTREE. · There would be a sharing component to the group (i.e. everyone would bring a copy of their recipe to share with the others). · There would be an educational component to the group. This could be anything from how to cook with say different lentils (or Kale or Collards), the health benefits...the list is endless. Tips you have found useful for cooking plant based foods. · There would be a resource component to the group: i.e. your favourite plant based cookbook, favourite websites for plant based food ideas, an interesting plant based food article or foodie video you recently came upon, upcoming related events in our area, foodie U-Pick locations, fresh farm gate foodie locations. · The group would alternate these lunch gatherings at members home. Group would need to be limited to 8 members so everyone could accommodate the group. If there was enough interest, I would be happy to be the activity co-ordinator.

REMINDERS

The Suggestion Box is out at every meeting – any speaker ideas always welcome.

A reminder to members to “lug a mug” to meetings - help reduce our use of paper cups!

When replying to emails from different Probus group, please remember to not reply to all. This was mentioned at our last Probus meeting but some are still getting emails that were replied to all, and they are basically saying they could not attend. Thank you!
