CarFit PROGRAM & DRIVER SAFETY Several members took advantage of the June CarFit program sponsored by AAA/AARP/AOTA by having a team of trained technicians assess how well they “fit” their car for maximum comfort and safety. Proper positioning of your car’s seat, steering wheel, seat belt, head rest and mirrors as well as good foot positioning is tailored to each driver during the 20-30 minute evaluation.

As we age and our bodies change how we “fit” our vehicle may change too. Another program will be set up in the fall for your to take advantage of this informative and free program.

We will also have a representative from Delaware Motor Vehicle visit in the fall to answer questions and review the new federally compliant driver license/ID requirements.

Don’t forget that a 4-hour AARP Defensive Driving Refresher Course will take place on September 8 and again November 10. A sign-up sheet is located at the front desk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

changes, please write a note and put it in the lobby suggestion box.

MORNING COFFEE

Coffee for members is provided by City Fare and we ask that you limit yourself to two cups. Other items such as bread, muffins, coffee cake, butter, jelly, cream cheese, etc. are not provided by either the Center or City Fare. Those items are sometimes available from donations by members. If you enjoy having a morning snack, you might consider bringing an item to share.

Please remember that Marsha’s priority each morning is organizing the kitchen for delivery of home-bound meals and the Center’s noon meal - not putting out snack items.

CAREGIVER’S CORNER

FREE FAMILY CAREGIVERS KIT Information from “Dear Abby”

The Federal Citizen Information Center created a free Family Caregivers Kit to help caregivers assist their loved ones in handling their finances and health care. It features publications from the Consumer Protection Bureau entitled ”Managing Someone Else’s Money”, which covers Power of Attorney, Managing Trusts, Property and Benefits. The booklets are written in simple English and are in an easy-to-understand format. Also included in the kit are materials from the FDA about keeping track of medications and how to use them safely. Up to 125,000 people die each year because they didn’t take their medication as directed – and many more get sick because of improper use. Another pamphlet shares information on recognizing and avoiding health scams – miracle devices and cures that really ARE too good to be true. Finally, the kit includes a copy of the 2014 Consumer Action Handbook, which has information about how to make the best decision about what to buy and service providers to us, as well as a sample complaint letter to help get results. The kit’s practical tips will give caregivers the confidence they need to manage another’s affairs, even if it’s for only a short period of time. The kit is available online at www.promotions.usa.gov/dearabby or from our Caregiver Resource Center. Abby states: “Every household in the country should have this information on hand ‘just in case,’ so order a kit for yourself and more to share.”

Grandparent Support Group meets Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Caregiver Support Group meets second Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

Funding for the Caregiver Resource Center comes from the Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities

as a result of the National Family Caregiver Support Program, Title III-E of the Older Americans Act.

Support for Caregivers... is available from our Caregiver Resource Center – call 651-3420 for more information.
