This conclave was designed to bring all the Stakeholders, Policy Makers, Academicians,
Agriculture Scientists, Agritech & Input Provider Companies on one platform and expose the
young delegates, students & faculty members to a variety of knowledge, research,
technological and communication advancements, processing, protection & marketing
initiatives going on in the vast field of sustainable Indian Agriculture.

Hazardous Waste Event: MARCH 15-16 2019
To disseminate the information and the risks involved in biological experimentations and from its
waste, a national workshop on biological risk management was conducted in association with
Central Molecular Research Laboratory, SGRR University, and Dehradun, India. In this workshop,
the participants were taught about the various risk factors involved in microbiological practices and
were taught about the uses of personal protective equipment. Participants of this interactive course
also had the opportunity to advance their biosafety knowledge in areas such as risk identification,
risk assessment, mitigation of risks, facility requirement, facility development and governmental
regulations. The pedagogical tools for the workshop were primarily lectures, discussion and hands-
on training. Briefly, the workshop contained sessions on the case studies on the need for biosafety,
basic principles of biosafety, transportation of hazardous waste materials, disposal of waste from
biological laboratories and the emergency response provisions. The workshop was a huge success in
terms of participation and learning of the participants.

To ensure the optimum segregation of biomedical waste at each source, the bins and posters along
with the necessary instructions have been placed in every laboratory. There is record-keeping of the
outgoing laboratory waste from every school. The waste record is maintained meticulously. Taking
lessons from the waste segregation and treatment guidelines, indigenous systems have also been
developed for the treatment of the liquid waste generated from our laboratories. The system is
highly effective in treating the liquid waste at-source and is therefore a positive step in ensuring the
quality of life on land. In the liquid waste treatment system, the waste is treated with a strong
oxidant (Sodium Hypochlorite) before being released into the environment.

The waste generated from multiple generation and segregation points throughout the university is
collected at a common waste handling point, where it is stored and handed over to government-
authorized waste disposal agencies after barcoding of the waste bags.

The primary handlers of the biomedical waste are the housekeeping staff, some of whom are
specially deputed to handle biomedical waste. The laboratory technical staff is also tasked with
training and demonstrating the methods for segregation of biomedical waste to the housekeeping
staff and janitors. The training sessions have been conducted for such staff, which have proven to be
effective in ensuring the safety of laboratory personnel as well as knowledge dissemination among
the janitorial staff.

The students are also given problem statements for research and innovation in the field of
biomedical waste management. The purpose of such ideas is to undertake some out of the box
thinking to solve real problems in an amicable fashion. Along such lines, the students of LPU
designed and created a smart waste collection solution called “Ally”, the smart bin. Ally is a
contactless waste collection and disposal bin that works on Voice Command. As it moves on a
predefined path inside a controlled environment and helps contactless collection of waste, Ally is
expected to find use in hospitals and medical centers to create a safer environment for the frontline
workers. This innovation was made for especially catering to the waste collection problems in the
areas of quarantine and containment zones, where free movement of personnel is risky.

National Conference on Microbial Bioprospecting: Present & Future
AMI-LPU Unit and Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab, conducted a “National
Conference on Microbial Bioprospecting: Present & Future, on March 2020. The event
demonstrated the importance of implementing lifelong learning initiatives at the microbial
level to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for better interaction of microbes
with existing life on Earth.
