KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL #4444

FROM THE DESK OF THE FINANCIAL SECRETARYBrothers,No sooner than you’re Council’s balanced fiscal year budget was passed at the September 12th meeting, when all the storms ofthe past few weeks finally took their toll on our roof protection. Water intrusions climaxed with a major leak over the stove, which shut down the kitchen. Emergency (and lasting) repairs will cost almost $2,000.00 They must be done before BINGO.And they will be. Fortunately, just after my plea for “bequeathments and memorials” in last month’s article, a memorial checkfor $500.00 came from an angel. That gets us started on payment and reduces the need to dip into our line of credit with thebank. Please note: your Council still has NO short term debt. Thanks to Bingo, Rentals, and Dues staying steady. This month’send will see quarterly dues notices in the mail. PLEASE respond quickly when you receive it.I want to remind all our Brothers that we schedule a 1st Degree for EVERY first Wednesday of the month at your hall. Whenasking prospective members to join, you can say with certainty that they can become members within a month. The next twohigher degrees are also set up to assure the opportunity exists to move into full Knighthood within 6 months of joining. Pleaseremember this. And as a repeat, our joint Council/Assembly Christmas Party will be held again this year at Pranzo’s (on the Island) on Sundaythe 16th of December. It will be a private affair in that the whole restaurant will have no customers but us, with plenty of freeparking. Cost will remain at $30.00 per person, including tip. More info on making reservations and selecting meal choices willbe in next month’s newsletter. Please circle the date NOW.YBICDick OlsonFinancial Secretary

Health ReportOctober is National Bullying Prevention Month

What is bullying? At first glance, many people might think this behavior is easy to define. Their first image ofbullying might be of a physically intimidating boy beating up a smaller classmate. While that can still be consideredbullying today, parents need to know that bullying behaviors can be much more complex and varied than thattypical stereotype. For example, harmful bullying can also occur quietly and covertly, through gossip or on theInternet, causing emotional damage. Let’s consider a few definitions of bullying.Although definitions of bullying vary, most agree that an act is defined as bullying when:

The behavior hurts or harms another person physically or emotionally. Bullying can be very overt, such asfighting, hitting or name calling, or it can be covert, such as gossiping or leaving someone out on purpose.

It is intentional, meaning the act is done willfully, knowingly and with deliberation. The targets have difficulty stopping the behavior directed at them and struggle to defend themselves.

Bullying can be circumstantial or chronic. It might be the result of a situation, such as being the new student atschool, or it might be behavior that has been directed at the individual for a long period of time.Harassing behaviors may include:

Unwelcome conduct such as: Verbal abuse, such as name-calling, epithets, slurs Graphic or written statements Threats Physical assault Other conduct that may be physically threatening, harmful, or humiliating

It is important that parents approach this situation in a calm manner and that parents keep records of facts in thesituation. It is helpful if parents and school staff work together to resolve the issue. Parents can use the followingsteps to resolve the issue:Thank your child for telling you. Tell your child that the bullying is not his or her fault. Talk with your child aboutthe specifics of the situation and ask:

Who is doing the bullying? What happened? Was it…

o Verbal bullying?o Physical bullying?o Cyber bullying? (Meet directly with the principal if this is the case.)

What days and times were you bullied? Where did the bullying take place?

Also find out how your child responded to the bullying and if other children or adults might have observed thebullying. Does your child know the names of these people? Keep a written record of this information. It is important that you tell a school staff (teacher, principal, and other staff). Together we can improve ourSchools, communities and our children’s futures by standing up against bullying!

Be Safe, Be informed and enjoy healthy living!

Yours in Christ,PGK Hal Griffin Visit us at www.kofc4444.com 7

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 4444

We had no nominations for Knight of the Month and Family of the Month for October. That’s sad. I need input. I can’t do everything myself. Brother Joseph JohnCherniga went to our Lord on 8 September 2012. Please keep Nancy and her family in yourprayers.

The KofC Council 4444 Soccer Challenge was held on the 23rd of September. Thanks goout to Aaron Cantu, our Youth Director, and all those who assisted in making this event asuccess. We have winners from several age groups that will move on to the District andRegional Challenges scheduled for to be held here at St Mary’s School on 13 Oct 2012.

This time it falls onHalloween, 31 October, which is a bad night to have a family get together. What I propose is thatwe put our effort into the Family Picnic which is scheduled for 21st of October. Any commentscan be directed to me at 225-0740 or [email protected] of the Family Picnic on the 21st of October, what we would like to do this time isa little different. The council will buy the meats, breads, condiments and drinks. What we wouldlike is for each family to provide a dish or dishes. We will provide a “pony-keg”, but you can bringyour own beer if you wish. There are many different cultures and backgrounds among thecouncil. I feel it would be wonderful to try the native foods of other cultures. If you don’t have aparticular food you would like to make, then makeVisit us at www.kofc4444.com 9
