Acts10-11 narrates the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the Gentiles. Both Peter and Cornelius (a Gentile centurion who believes in Christ) receive visions that lead to Peter baptizing Cornelius and his house-hold. This is a significant development in the plot of the story, as well as in the life of the early Church. In Acts, the Holy Spirit facilitates the spread of Christianity. Luke tells of the Holy Spirit descending not only upon Jewish followers of Jesus (Acts 2:1-4) but also on Samaritans (8:14-17) and Gentile followers (10:44-48), as heard in today’s reading. The role of the Spirit remains integral throughout Acts, in the early missionary work of Peter and John, especially in Paul’s mission to the Gentiles (see, for example, 16:6-10; 20:17-24; 21:7-14). For Luke, the descent and presence of the Holy Spirit onto Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles emphasizes the universal aspect of salvation, for the God of Israel now offers it to the world. The reason for this shift is best ex-plained by Peter’s words: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is ac-ceptable to him.” One of the many issues that Luke needed to explain about the early decades of the Church was the high number of Gentiles who were joining. Jesus and most of his original followers were Jewish. Many wondered, at the time when Acts was written, around AD 85, what accounted for the Jewish-Gentile mixture of Christians. Luke believed it was important to show how the two leading Apostles, Peter and Paul, were open to including Gentiles. This openness was already evident in some of Pauls’ own letters written in the AD mid-59s. Both Galatians 2:6 and Romans 2:11 speak of God’s impartiality to all who have faith. In Acts, with Peter’s own words and eyewitness to the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the believers in Cornelius’ household, Gentiles were welcomed into the Church by its two great Apostles, Peter and Paul

The Holy Spirit and the Spread of Christianity

Liturgy Corner by: Deborah Ferry (taken from commentary on today’s 1st reading)

PALABRA Que Da La Vida

Our Lady of Fatima We celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13. Mary appeared to three peasant children near Fatima, Portugal, six times between May 13 and October 13, 1917, and asked for prayers for world peace and an end to World War I, for sinners, and for the conversion of Russia. She entrusted the children with three secrets, regarding devotion to her Immaculate Heart, a vision of hell, and a “bishop in white” shot by soldiers firing bullets and arrows. Many connect the third secret to the attempted assassination of Blessed Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981, and the pope thanked Mary for guiding the bullet and saving him. At the Vatican, Pope Francis has stood before the statue of Our Lady from the Fatima shrine and formally entrusted the world to Mary. A beloved, tender, obedient father Saint Joseph, in fact, “concretely expressed his fatherhood” by making an offering of himself in love “a love placed at the service of the Messiah who was growing to maturity in his home,” writes Pope Francis, quoting his predecessor St Paul VI. And because of his role at “the crossroads between the Old and New Testament,” St Joseph “has always been venerated as a father by the Christian people” (PC, 1). In him, “Jesus saw the tender love of God,” the one that helps us accept our weakness, because “it is through” and despite “our fears, our frailties, and our weakness” that most divine designs are realized. “Only tender love will save us from the snares of the accuser,” emphasizes the Pontiff, and it is by encountering God’s mercy especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation that we “experience His truth and tenderness,” – because “we know that God’s truth does not condemn us, but instead welcomes, embraces, sustains and forgives us” (2). Joseph is also a father in obedience to God: with his ‘fiat’ he protects Mary and Jesus and teaches his Son to “do the will of the Father.” Called by God to serve the mission of Jesus, he “cooperated… in the great mystery of Redemption,” as St John Paul II said, “and is truly a minister of salvation” (3).

A Mother’s Love A Prayer of Our Lady of Fatima

We praise you, Lord, and bless you, For in a time of horrific war And pandemic plague, You sent us your mother, Our Lady of Fatima. We sing praises to you, For even in times of sorrow and fear The Earth is still touched by one such as she. And we are reminded, Knowing that whatever war visits itself upon us, What-ever deprivations, Whatever want, Whatever illness, Whatever calamity endured by humankind That may cause us to look to the sky and despair, That your children do not toil in this world apart from your grace, That our prayers are not unheard And we do not go

forth without a mother’s love. Keep us devoted to you, O Lord, Devoted in our prayer, our words and our acts, That all souls in this world may know your compassion, peace and mercy, That all souls who have departed this world may find salvation. Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, pray for us. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. Amen.

Manténnos consagrados a ti, oh Señor.
