All About MalaysiaThe Economy of Malaysia is a growing and relatively open state-

oriented and newly industrialised market economy. The state plays a

significant but declining role in guiding economic activity throughmacroeconomic plans. As one of three countries that controlthe Strait of Malacca, international trade plays a large role in itseconomy. At one time, it was the largest produceroftin, rubber and palm oil in the world. Manufacturing has a largeinfluence in the country's economy. Malaysia is the world's largestIslamic banking and financial centre.

Early and colonial historyThe Malay Peninsula and indeed Southeast Asia has been a

center for trade for centuries. Various items suchas porcelain and spice were actively traded evenbefore Malacca and Singapore rose to prominence. The MalaccaSultanate controlled the Straits of Malacca from its founding in 1402to the 1511 invasion by Portugal. All the trade in the Straits, andespecially the spices from the Celebes and the Moluccas, moved underits protection and through its markets.

In the 17th century, porcelain and spices were found inseveral Malay states and were actively traded. Large deposits

the world's largest producer of tin, rubber, and palm oil. These threecommodities along with other raw materials firmly set Malaysia'seconomic tempo well into the mid-20th century.

Geography of MalaysiaThe geography of Malaysia deals with the physical and human

geography ofMalaysia, a country located in Southeast Asia. There aretwo distinct parts to this country being Peninsular Malaysiato the

west and East Malaysiato the east. Peninsular Malaysia is locatedsouth ofThailand, north ofSingapore and east ofthe Indonesian island ofSumatra. East Malaysia is located on theisland ofBorneo and shares borders with Brunei andIndonesia.

ClimateLocated near the equator, Malaysia's climate is categorised

as equatorial, being hot and humid throughout the year. The averagerainfall is 250 centimetres (98 in) a year and the average temperatureis 27 C (80.6 F). The climates of the Peninsula and the East differ, asthe climate on the peninsula is directly affected by wind from themainland, as opposed to the more maritime weather of the East.Malaysia is exposed to the El Nino effect, which reduces rainfall in thedry season. Climate change is likely to have a significant effect onMalaysia, increasing sea levels and rainfall, increasing flooding risks

and leading to large droughts.Malaysia faces two monsoon winds seasons, the Southwest

Monsoon from late May to September, and the Northeast Monsoonfrom November to March. The Northeast Monsoon brings in morerainfall compared to the Southwest Monsoon, originating

Local climates are affected by the presence of mountain rangesthroughout Malaysia, and climate can be divided into that of thehighlands, the lowlands, and coastal regions. The coasts have a sunnyclimate, with temperatures rangingbetween 23 C (73.4 F) and 32 C (89.6 F),and rainfall ranging from10 centimetres (4 in) to 30 centimetres (12 in) a month. Thelowlands have a similar temperature, but follow a more distinctive

rainfall pattern and show very high humidity levels. The highlands arecooler and wetter, and display a greater temperature variation. A largeamount of cloud cover is present over the highlands, which havehumidity levels that do not fall below 75%.

Religion of MalaysiaMalaysia is multicultural and multiconfessional. The

dominant religion in Malaysia is Islam, whose followers make up 60

per cent of the population. Islam is recognised as the state religionofMalaysia, although the country has a secular constitution. Debateexists about whether Malaysia should be a secular or Islamic state, with politics often becoming entwined with religion. Due tocontention with an Islamic opposition, the ruling government hasslowly become more Islamic, with Islam beginning to have moreinfluence over day to day life in Malaysia. The government promotesthe spread of Islam, which is under the control of individual states.

Religion often follows ethnic lines, with most Muslims beingMalays. The code of Islam enforced is Sunni. Islam was introduced bytraders, becoming firmly established in the 15th century. Thegovernment promotes a moderate form of Islam known as IslamHadhari. Any teaching which deviates from the official Sunni code isillegal, and no other forms of Islam are allowed. The country has bothcivil and Shariah courts, with all muslims having to follow Shariah laws. These are enforced by the government and police forces.

The large Chinese population in Malaysia practices a mix ofbeliefs, with influences from traditional Chinese religions such asBuddhism and Daoism. Hinduism is practised by the majority

In the 2008 Olympic Games, Lee was given a bye in the first round. He cruised to straight game victories over Ronald Susilo in the secondround, Kstutis Navickas in the third round,[38]and Sony Dwi

    Kuncoro in the quarterfinals.[39]

He had a scare in the semifinals whereLee Hyun-il gave him a tough fight, but eventually Chong Wei wasable to beat the South Korean and reach the final.[40]However, it wasa one-sided final, as Lee was completely outplayed by Lin Dan andsalvaged only 20 points, losing 1221, 821.[41]He came second placeoverall.

Lee participated in several tournaments after the Olympic Games,

without capturing a title. He advanced to the finals of the Japan Open, the Macau Open and China Open, but lost to Sony Dwi Kuncoro,[42]Taufik Hidayat,[43]and Lin Dan respectively.[44]In the French OpenLee was eliminated in the semifinals.[45]His coach, Misbun Sidek, citedthe pressure of being ranked world number one to explain Lee'srecent failure to capture a title.[46]

Lee ended his last Super Series tourney of the year, the Hong KongOpen, with a sudden withdrawal due to a knee injury, conceding awalkover to GermanysMarc Zwiebler.[47]His last minute withdrawalled to the Chinese media to tag him as the "weakest world numberone".[48]The Chinese media also speculated that three factors hadhampered Lee's performance since the Olympic Games. They listedthese as the stress of the Olympic final, a phobia of Lin Dan due to hislopsided Olympic defeat at Lin's hands, and (echoing Misbun Sidek's

conjecture) the pressure of being the world number one.[49]

Despite Lee's recent difficulties in international play, he recorded hisseventh consecutive victory at the National Badminton Grand PrixFinal in Kedah on December 12, 2008, thus breaking the record of six
