Volume X, Issue 10 October 2013
October is a decidedly significant month for all of us as
members of Pilot International. Not only do we seek to
encourage others to join us during Share Pilot which is
an all-stops-out membership endeavor; we also cele-
brate the creation of our organization every October 18.
The first official Pilot Club meeting was held on October
18, 1921, and from that date on, Pilots around the world
gather to celebrate and honor this historic date as
Founders Day. After much deliberation, the name PI-
LOT was chosen, evoking the imagery of the riverboat
captain navigating his way down the waterway, just as
the organizers hoped the new organization would help
those in need navigate their way through life. Since
those early founding days, the projects undertaken by
the organization have made a decided mark on the
world stage. Early contributions as the purchase of a
Red Cross ambulance during World War II and furnish-
ing a children’s ward on the medical hospital ship, the
S.S. Hope, to recent contributions such as playgrounds
that are accessible for the handicapped and furnishings
for St. Jude Children’s Hospital are the sorts of things
Pilots have accomplished over the years. Today, Pilots
are dedicated to numerous Brain Safety and Fitness
initiatives, including BrainMinders, which is Pilot’s own
educational program.
On a local level, LPCC members have bestowed many
scholarships to graduating high school seniors, spent
many hours at the Chesapeake Care Free Clinic, played
numerous rounds of Bingo at the Coastal Clubhouse, and
tutored and encouraged many students at Thurgood
Marshall Elementary School, to name a few. We sponsor
Anchor Clubs, through the Youth Leadership and Devel-
opment initiatives, at Grassfield High School, Great
Bridge High School, Hickory High School, and Hickory
Middle School. We have contributed heavily to the Pilot
International Founders Fund, and recently we were the
recipients of a PI grant to benefit Coastal Clubhouse.
How we as Luncheon Pilot Club of Chesapeake members
“grow” and develop our potential is inherently more im-
portant than celebrating history and more vital than invit-
ing prospective members to a Share Pilot event. Current
members who are dedicated, active, and motivated insure
our effectiveness and determine our longevity. I encour-
age each of you to take our new motto seriously: Do
More. Care More. Be More.

October's Party
October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Ma-
ples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread
a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the
dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

Handbook Corrections and Omissions
Please let me know if you have been a "Pilot Sweetheart" for LPCC or the former PC. I will print a revised list. Also, I want to know
past presidents and past governors (with years) from former PC.
In addition, if there are other corrections, please let me know. If you were absent at our September meeting, please check your
information when you get your handbook.
Preparing the handbook this year (pilot year) was a daunting task,
and I made mistakes which I will correct.
In Pilot friendship,

Let’s Knit for Kids
BBRRR….it’s going to be a cold winter. Let’s spread some warmth. The
LPCC is knitting hats for the first graders in our adopted class at Thurgood
Marshall Elementary School. If you can assist in this project, knit a child’s
hat in any pattern and yarn of your choosing. Completed hats will be col-
lected at the October and November meeting. The hats will be given to
Kay Martin, Karen Gawne and Charlotte Riddick to disperse to the stu-
dents. If you need yarn please contact Ceil Rochevot at 547-4162.

One of the highlights of the November meeting will be our Silent Auction. It's a great opportunity to give up some of your treasures & bring home other's treasures. If you cannot attend October's meeting, but have items to donate,

BRAINMINDERS
The primary goal of BrainMinders is to dramatically decrease the number of brain injuries. The Brain-Minder Buddies program structures injury prevention by teaching how to “Play Safe, Play Smart” through the story “ Wise Old Owl and his Fuzzy, Funny, Smart and Sunny BrainMinder Buddies”.
Pat Wright, Brenda Barrett, and Ceil Rochevot, of the Luncheon Pilot Club of Chesapeake will present the Brain Minders puppet program to children at the Great Bridge Child Care Center on October 7th at 9:00 am to learn how to protect their heads from harm. If you would like to participate, contact Pat Wright.
More sessions are to be scheduled. Look for oppor-tunities to participate in the near future.

Perception is our understanding by
means of the senses or the mind. Perception
is reality. We may not think we are this way
or that way, but if that is the way we are per-
ceived, or understood by others, and then we
have to change the reality or the perception--
or both.
We often think we have been crystal clear in
our explanation, considerate in our tone of
voice, kind in our actions. Then everything
backfires, and we wonder what is wrong with
the other person. Frequently, our body lan-
guage, the pitch and the volume of our voice--
even the words we choose--all contribute to
our failure to communicate with others. If an-
other person hears, or even perceives she/he
hears, (however wrong that may be from what
we actually said); it is a reality that must be
dealt with accordingly.
Every leaf speaks bliss to me,
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
