A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE We are very pleased and grateful for the remarkable attendance and participation at the temple for all of the HARI events year to date. HARI committee members and volunteers are working together to provide the facilities and services which make HARI a welcoming place for every occasion. With the presence of two priests, the temple doors are now open more hours, with daily services seven days a week. In addition, the priests are still available to perform traditional services in your home or at the temple to fulfill all of your religious needs. We are planning regular weekend Abhishekams at the temple and will soon be available to devotees to participate. We have planned many cultural events for the summer months. Please look out for these events in future communications and on our website. Your attendance and participation at these events is appreciated. You will be supporting the artists, and encouraging similar events in the future. A HARI canteen service is currently being planned by the committee. If you need more information or like to volunteer for the canteen services, please contact Dr. Ray Kathiresan at 717-790-0786. As we continue to work diligently towards the goals established at the beginning of the year, we are pleased to inform our dedicated members that we are getting close to reaching our membership goal. Our membership roster currently stands at 425 and may well exceed our target of 500 for the year. In addition, the temple roof and the upper hallway painting project have both been completed. Our committee members, along with volunteers, are continue to work hard to maintain and enhance the facility for broader use. The Board of Trustees has approved several major capital projects and efforts to raise funds are underway. We would like to encourage our community members at large to contribute in this fundraiser with donations or a simple hand. Any help offered is greatly appreciated. HARI held its first Gala on April 26th attended by over 250 people – it was a great evening enjoyed by all. The event was held to raise funds for the Trust Fund – over $30,000 was raised! Thank you to the HARI Gala Committee, Executive Committee, all the sponsors and all those individuals who attended the event and also helped in making the event a success. Vedas

Researched by – Mrs. Lakshmi Shrikantia

The Vedas form the core of our religion. The word Veda is derived from the root ‘vid’ means ‘to know’. The Vedas are said to be ‘Anaadi’ that is without a beginning. By definitions, the Vedas are ‘Apourusheya’ which means of non-human origin. If the rishis were to have written the Vedas they would have called them Mantra Kartas (composers of the Mantras). But they are called Mantra Drishtras, which means having a vision of the mantras. It is believed that the Vedas were divinely revealed to the gifted ears of some of the Rishis who were specially attuned to hear the Vedas and were called ‘Shruthis’. For centuries, the Vedas have been passed on to the next generation by oral recitation (Guru – Shishya parampara). “Anantha vai Vedhaah” – Endless are the Vedas. Only a portion of the Vedas was revealed to the Rishis, enough for our happiness and salvation as well as for Universal welfare. Krsna Dvaipayana Vyasa edited the Vedas into four groups. He taught them to his four chief disciples: Rigveda to Paila; Yajurveda to Vaisampayana; Saamaveda to Jaimini and Atharvaveda to Sumantu. The Vedas are also divided by Mantra and Brahmana. Brahmana is further divided into Aranyaka and Upanishad. Aranyakas teach about meditations based on rites and the Upanishads are personalized instructions to those, fit to receive them (Jnaana Maarga). Mantras include the hymns and chants. The Four Vedas: Rigveda: is considered as the oldest of all the Vedas. It is a collection of slokas/hymns revealed to various rishis at different periods of time. As a result, one can notice the difference in the styles of language, grammar and ideas. It is said to have 21 sakhas; only five are known. Each ‘Rik’ (sloka) is a mantra. Rigveda can roughly be divided into three groups. The first group deals with the gods like Agni (God of fire), Indra (God of rains), Varuna (God of water), and others. The second group deals with philosophical speculations like the origin of the universe and the true nature of human beings. The third group deals with marriage, wars, etc. Rigveda explains the ways of social living better than others. Yajurveda: The word ‘yajus’ is derived from the root word ‘yaj’ meaning ‘worship’. It is a collection of yajus- mantras in prose, which are used to perform ‘yagnas’. Yajurveda gives the mantras in Rigveda a practical shape in the form of yagna. The two main forms of Yajur veda are Shukla Yajur Veda and Krishna Yajur veda. Yajurveda gives good presentations of the Vedic Karma or rituals. Saamaveda: ‘Sa’ means rik, a mantra of the rigveda. ‘Ama’ means various musical notes. Many of the mantras in Rigveda are set to music in melodious slokas in Saamaveda. Though the mantras are the same, the chanting in Saamaveda is set to lengthened notes. Atharvaveda: ‘Atharva’ means ‘priest’ (purohit). This veda contains many types of mantras to keep off evil. A major part of this veda is concerned with diseases and their cure. It also contains slokas dealing with creation. The pride of this mantra is that Brahma supervises the conduct of the yagnas.
