Best practice sees the selection of equipment that reduces the generation of harmonics in the first place. Harmonic filters will shunt harmonic currents back at their source. The most reliable solution is to design a system to handle expected harmonics without overheating or producing too much voltage distortion. This is where Premium Power can help. We are experts in providing harmonic mitigation solutions.

Assessment, Design & Supply

Premium Power can assess and model large scale electrical systems to address harmonic issues. We provide harmonic mitigation solutions such as active and passive filters and follow up maintenance programmes to ensure systems run efficiently.

Harmonics issues can be solved.

CASE STUDY: Pharmaceutical Industry

In 2013, Premium Power carried out an extensive power quality study at a large multi-national pharmaceutical manufacturer in Co. Sligo. This facility had recently introduced a new production process which required a reliable, mission critical electrical supply.  A full evaluation was required to ensure that the facility’s electrical distribution network was functioning as required and could support the new pharmaceutical production equipment. The Client also needed assurances that the electrical supply would not cause equipment malfunctions leading to production outages or downtime.

AssessmentPremium Power conducted an extensive power quality metering assessment with advanced portable devices to identify vulnerable points on the network. The assessment highlighted significant breaches of the voltage harmonic limits for controlled and sensitive equipment as stipulated by the IEC61000-2-4 standard.

OutcomePremium Power modelled the facility’s electrical distribution network in a specialist software analysis program. The software model was used to size a filtering solution that would mitigate the harmonic issues. Premium Power supplied and commissioned multiple Active Harmonic Filters at the Client’s facility. This resulted in significant reduction of harmonic currents (ITHD reduced from 55% to 16%), consequently lowering the level of voltage harmonic distortion, maintaining it within the IEC61000-2-4 limits and preventing future failures of critical devices, such as PLCs and controls.
