CENTRAL AFRICA MISSION MR. AND MRS. ALFRED BATTLES, Forwarding Agents P.O. BOX 8321 LA CRESCENTA, CALIF. 91214 FIELD ADDRESS BOX 330, KAROI. RHODESIA BILL REBA DAVID AND JULIE I Technology And aviation Serving the Kingdom JANUARY, 1975 Dear Friends; Another New Year is here - our third in Rhodesia! 1974 passed so quickly, as time does pass when you are really enjoying what you are doing. We are indeed enjoying our life and work at Chidamoyo. Several people have written since they received our last Newsletter, saying that they are pleased we are staying on another two years before returning on furlough. We pray all who are support ing us will feel the same way. The African schools started the new school year last Thursday, January 16. There is a nationwide shortage of trained teachers, and all three of our schools are feeling this shortage. When trained teachers are not available, we hire persons who are untrained on a temporary basis, replacing them as trained ones do become available. Bill will be teaching scripture classes on Fridays to the upper grades at Dandawa School—the school on the mission site. This last school year proved to be most successful for the Dandawa School. Out of 37 seventh graders, 16 passed well enough to continue on to Secondary School; 20 passed well enough to go on to Junior Secondary School (a more vocational type of school), and only one did not pass well enough to go on. Of course, all will not find places since there is room in the African Secondary Schools for only 12% of the total number of seventh graders - so only the top students will find places. Out of our 36 passes, 9 will be going on for further schooling. We were granted permission by Mr. Myamaromo, the headman of this immediate area, to begin a series of lessons in his village. At the first meeting, there were five interested men and several women and children. At Mr. Ndoro*s village they are planning to build a church_ shelter. Three more young women have expressed interest in becoming Christians. We are finding that many people, even Christians, know little about the Bible as a whole. They have heard about Adam and Eve and know Jesus, but have very little knowledge of what happened in between. They have no concept of how God prepared the nation of Israel to receive the Messiah. We are including in the lessons at both villages teachings from the Old Testament to fill in the gap. Our thanks go to all who have helped us through 1974. May the Lord richly bless you in 1975. Dear Christian Friends:

We are enjoying a nice, though overcast, morning. I have a fewminutes before we load the airplane to fly to clinics. We are reallyenjoying this weather - some rain nearly every day, with some sunshining through. However, the farmers are complaining because it ishigh time for the rains to be finished and their maize is rotting before it can be harvested. Many people will be without food becauseof the poor maize harvest. Those who planted the R-260 seed whichmatures early are most unfortunate.

Yes, the seed is important, and one must choose wisely. The firstthing Jesus said to His disciples in explaining the parable of thesower was concerning the "seed." He emphasized the importance of the"seed" by placing it first in His explanation. He said, "The seed isthe Word of God." (Luke 8:11)

Through all of our varied activities our prayer is that we canemphasize the tremendous importance of the "seed" the Word of God foreveryone we meet. As we go out to preach and teach; as we go to inspectschools; as we go out with the landrover to winch out large buses thatget stuck frequently this year; as we make decisions concerning thewisest use of our mission lorry whether we should answer "yes" to allthe requests for transport, or whether we must often say "no." Mustconcern for spreading the "seed" be limited by distance and the feasibility of driving long distances on rationed fuel, though we are often requested to go? There are so many who need the spiritual strengtheningand growth the "Good Seed" offers.

Pray for us, that we will be able to make objective decisions basedon the Word; that we will be able to recognize and help those who arereally in need; that we will be able to say "yes" more often --for Ithink that saying "no" is the hardest thing for this servant of Christto have to do.

We really have few problems and great blessings, for which wepr'aise God through Jesus Christ our Lord. We witnessed 13" ffiore born^n-to the Kingdom last Sunday.

    Thank you for your prayers.

    We love you.

Vie are happy, on this beautiful day, to be part of Christ's Body the Church.Ihe friendships we make with other Christians are not sirtply of passing interest, butaiB friendships vMch will never end. It is exciting to say and think vdien we partthat scsmeday we WILL meet again I

    Vfe have enjoyed meeting and gettingto knew Dr. Marshall Hayden, Chairman ofCentral African Mission Board in the UnitedStates. I collected him at Bulawayo airport on last Wednesday inoming, and took himto Binga, vrfiere he remained overnight. OnThursday, the Council of the Blind team. Dr.Hayden and I flew back to Chidamoyo, vdieremany of our friends got acquainted with himover tea and a special simper. On Friday,I took him to Salisbury in 36 Charlie. TheViMission airplanes made it possible for himto visit all of the mission stations during;

V his ten short days here.

As we told Dr. Hayden, we have itanyneeds, we think, but the major need here inRhodesia is dedicated preacherif'bf the Gospel. The facilities have be^ well developed, andnow tl^ time is ri^t and the harvest is ripe, only heeding to be brought into the storehouseof the Kingdan. .Our prayer is that more trained ministera jfr^AnariG^ see the_di^l^ge, and give themselves to the job of reapiiig In I^odesia. In the sumtier of1977, we will be going on furlough, so new would be an ideal tirre for a family tobegin preparations to cone- if only for a year of relief viile we are away in the States. Please, if this appeal in any way tugs at your heart, write and indicate to us that youare interested! Of course, we are all aware of the uncertainity of conditions allover the world, but we must step out on faith and do v^t He calls us to do vMle tiireremains.

During the school holiday just past, Reba was asked by the AgriculturalDoronstrator, Mr. Senah, (on the right) to help with a dressmaking course

for the Young Farmers' Girls Club. Sotieof the girls had been to school, othershad been through the seventh grade, butnew that they were finished had nothing todo. One girl, {front rcw, left) didn'tknew hew to use a pair of sissors. Wereally had fun with her I As you can seein the picture, all managed to finish theirdresses in a we^'s time. INtost of the sewing was done by hand, as we had only onesewing machine for twelve girls. The purpose of the clubs is to gi^^e practicaltraining and provide something worthwhileto do vdiile these girls are "in-between"school and marriage. Mr. Senah is errployedby the government to help the farmers inthe area, and to stimulate cenminity development and self-help. We want to encouragehim in every possible way, and were happy tohelp with the sewing classes.

    In His Service.

    Dear Friends:

We praise God for another opportunity to share with you in thisway. We must admit we feel we have let you down by not being regularwith these letters. We could make excuses about rising costs and poorexchange rates between U.S. and Rhodesian currency, but we do know theimportance of keeping you informed.

Our first week of this latest school holiday began on Friday,August 15th,when I flew to Salisbury to collect Mr. Doug Bemo of theRevival Fires tour group. We had anticipated having two members and hadplanned our schedule accordingly. Doug graciously accepted the doubleschedule of preaching, starting on Sunday at the Karoi African Churchwith one responding to the invitation.

On Monday and Tuesday, leaders of many of our churches came toChidamoyo for a time of training and discussion led by Doug.

Wednesday morning we left Chidamoyo by landrover with a load ofmen. Arriving at the village of the church leader at Chanetsa, Mr.Ben-jamin Ndamb;^kuwa wtargi gr-p^ia-he>(^ by-on the previous day for an all-night church meeting led by one of thedeacons. After tea we enjoyed singing together and a message by BrotherDoug. They insisted that we eat before going to the next meeting place. So at one p.m., we were off for Kahonde Church of Christ and arrived justafter two. The Christians had gathered that morning dressed in theircolorful clothes, and all came singing and clapping to meet our car. Thefirst order of business was food. Yes, they had prepared a fine mealfor us at the preacher's home, and it would have been ungracious not toeat. Even though we were full"taguta" in Shona we all enjoyed anothermeal. Following the service in which a choir of four women sang a verytouching American Negro spiritual and Doug preached a warm message ofJesus and His love, we headed back to the mission for the first of threeevening evangelistic meetings. We didn't feel like eating before Church, for some reason 1

On Thursday, Jim Frasure took Doug and others to preachand eatat Chipere and Stop. I flew the hospital orderlies to clinics, andpreached.

On Friday, Jim had surgery, and I had to go to Karoi to cash thegovernment check to pay the teachers. I was nearly ready to take off withthe motorcycle in the airplane (for transport at the other end) when Iwas called to the radio-phone. Dr. Kenny Messman wondered if I could meethim about noon at Bumi Hills (by air) with the cycle to take him out 10miles to inspect an airstrip nearly ready for use at Chief Moleh's area.Since I had taught Mr. Marowa, one of the hospital chaplains^to drive hewas able to take Doug to the five preaching points on Friday. By fourp.m., we were all back safe and sound, praising God for His goodness andlooking forward to our final evening service with Brother Doug.

Saturday, on the way to Bulawayo, taking Doug back to his tourgroup, we stopped in Sinoia for a women's seminar being led by Mrs. DavidGrimm from the group. She was speaking to the European church women andReba was happy to be able to attend her sessions. Mrs. Grimm is a well-known speaker for Christian women's groups in the U.S., and has traveledwith Revival Fires on several tours around the world. She had many practical things to say on Bible study, child discipline, the Holy Spirit, prayer and the wonderful way God answers prayer. Her knowledge of theScriptures and her wide experience through travel makes her a very interesting speaker.

  • We spent the night in Salisbury, drove all the next day, arrivingin Bulawayo just in time for the final evening service of the RevivalFires group there.

The Spiritual Retreat for the missionaries, which we had beenlooking forward to on Monday and Tuesday, had been cancelled, so we hadtwo unexpected days to spend in Bulawayo before the CAM meeting on Wednesday. As we had not been in town for shopping since last schoolholiday three months ago, we welcomed the extra time. We also visitedsome of the interesting places around Bulawayo; the museum and a nearbygame reserve. It was such a thrill to see rhino, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala and other animals all grazing together without cages or fencesfor miles and miles.

We are especially thankful to Doug for his willing spirit. Thepeople felt his concern for them, and grew to love him during his shortstay with us. We felt it to be a real time of revival for the Churches.

    Love in Christ,

    Bill and Reba Harrison

    Dear Friends of T (A) S K:

T SK... T SK.., Oh, oh, there seems tobe something missingyes, the big "A"is missing from TASK these days.(See pictures 1)

October 15 was a "Bad Day at Shamrock."On that Wednesday morning,^,Dr. Jim

    - FrasureV who as many of you know is a pilot also, was landing Chidamoyo's

famous Cessna 180, N9036Charley, forhis weekly visit at Shamrock Mine. Allseemed well and the craft was nearlystopped when a gust of wind caught underthe tail, and without warning the planewent over onto its back. In the process,it bounced heavily on the nose. Itsustained heavy damage to the engine, propeller, forward fuselage, wings andtail. The...Dr. was unhurt -thanks to all

safety precautions (i.e. lap and shoulderharness properly adjusted and all itemssecured properly in the cabin area). But in the area of Aviation, outwork isgreyly purtailed.

Since tt.his . airplane was brought to thefield in IQfip hy Dr.^RaX-^. Erickson ithas served in a wonderful way the medicaland evangelical outreach of Chidamoyo.

^r.. Bill Nice and now Dr_. Jim, F.rasureall realized its value.

With much optimism and seeking God'sguidance, we have negotiations underway right now for a naw. .Ma.ule._Lmi^r /R9cket (for you airplane buffs) to be

"^fiown to Rhodesia by a Christian manfrom the Midwest. We are praying that details can be worked out quickly, and that the flying weather over the North Atlantic will remain good.

May God continue to richly bless you as he does us, and we pray that thisfinds you well and happy in Jesus, as we are.

    To Lift Him Up,
